Free-Floating Terms and Phrases H 362

BACKGROUND: Except for free-floating music phrase headings, the construction of which is
explained in H 1917.5, the terms and phrases described in this instruction sheet constitute a
complete list of those that have been authorized for use on a free-floating basis in constructing
phrase headings. This instruction sheet serves only to list and illustrate the construction of
such headings; separate instruction sheets describe in greater detail the assignment of many of
these categories of headings. These are cited in parentheses following the examples listed for
the category.

Note: The following former free-floating phrase headings have been replaced by
free-floating subdivisions or by separately established headings. The phrase heading
[personal name] in fiction, drama, poetry, etc. was discontinued in August 1993 and
replaced by the free-floating subdivision BIn literature used under names of individual
persons and literary authors. The phrase heading [name heading (except personal
names)] in literature was discontinued in August 1993 and replaced by the free-floating
subdivision BIn literature used under names of individual families, dynasties, royal
houses, corporate bodies, countries, cities, etc., and uniform titles of sacred works. The
phrase heading [name heading (except personal names)] in art was discontinued in
January 1997 and replaced by the free-floating subdivision BIn art used under names of
individual corporate bodies and under countries, cities, etc. The phrase headings [topic]
in literature and [topic] in art are no longer free-floating and must now be individually
established.

2. Use of commas. When constructing headings of this type based on headings that are
inverted or that include a comma not enclosed within a parenthetical qualifier, place an
additional comma between the basic heading and the free-floating term or phrase. Example:
