What Is It? (INFORMATION SHEET 1.2)
❖ Read study and write the content of Information Sheet 1.2 in your notebook.
HARDWARE
The physical, touchable, electronic, and mechanical parts of a computer which is
composed of different devices attached to the computer.
The following list represents a basic set of devices found in most Personal
Computers.
1. System unit is also known as a Computer case, computer
chassis, tower or cabinet which is the main part of a
desktop computer. The system unit is the core of a
computer system. Usually it is a rectangular box placed on
or underneath your desk. Inside this box are many
electronic components that process information. A
computer case is what contains the entire computer’s components. Almost every part of
your computer connects to the control panel by using cables. The cables are plugged into
specific ports (openings), typically at the back of the
system unit.
Two Types of System Case
1. Tower (Full, Mid, Mini) – designed to sit
vertically motherboard
2. Desktop (Standard, Slimline) – designed to sit
horizontally
2. Motherboard / Mainboard / System Board- The main circuit
board of a computer. It contains all the circuits and components
that run the computer.
4. Primary storage- (internal storage, main memory, or memory) is the computer's working
storage space that holds data, instructions for processing and processed data
(information) waiting to be sent to secondary storage. Physically, primary storage is a
collection of RAM chips.
14
2) RAM – (Random Access Memory) RAM is volatile, meaning it holds data
only when the power is on. When the power is off, RAM's contents are lost.
5. Expansion Bus - A bus is a data pathway between several
hardware components inside or outside a computer. It does
not only connect the parts of the CPU to each other, but also
links the CPU with other important hardware.
11. Mouse - The mouse is used to communicate with the objects on the
computer screen. You can move objects, open them, change them,
throw them away, and perform other actions, all by pointing and
clicking your mouse.
Note: An older mouse comes with a connector in the PS/2 style which
still works well. Just don't unplug the mouse while the computer is turned
on, the mouse will stop working even after you plug it back in frenziedly. (Restart the
computer and the mouse will start working again.)
Additional Information: Keyboard comes with three port supported technology USB, PS2,
and Wireless.
The keys on your keyboard can be divided into several groups based on function:
• Typing (alphanumeric) keys. These keys include the same letter, number,
punctuation, and symbol keys found on a traditional typewriter.
• Control keys. These keys are used alone or in combination with other keys
to perform certain actions. The most frequently used control keys are Ctrl,
Alt, the Windows logo key and ESC
• Function keys. The function keys are used to perform specific tasks. They
are labeled as F1, F2, F3, and so on, up to F12. The functionality of these
keys differs from program to program.
• Navigation keys. These keys are used for moving around in documents or
webpages and editing text. They include the arrow keys, Home, End, Page
Up, Page Down, Delete, and Insert.
• Numeric keypad. The numeric keypad is handy for entering numbers quickly.
The keys are grouped together in a block like a conventional calculator or
adding machine.
Additional Information: Keyboard comes with three ports supported technology USB,
PS2, and Wireless.
