LESSON PLAN

CONTENT STANDARDS
The Learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts, uses and importance of
statistics, data collection/gathering and the different forms of data representation, measures of
central tendency, and probability.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Is able to collect and organize data systematically and compute accurately measures of
central tendency and apply these appropriately in data analysis and interpretation in different
fields.

GRADE 7 MATH
LESSON: MEDIAN OF THE UNGROUPED DATA

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to

 define Median of the ungrouped data;

 solve problems involving Median of the ungrouped data;
 Apply Median in a real-life situation.

PRIMING
A. ROUTINE
1. Prayer
2. Attendance
3. Preparation of materials

B. MOTIVATION
A teacher will present images introducing the topic.

Activity
Direction: Analyze the images.

Answer the following questions:

1. What comes in to your mind when you see the images?
2. Give one (1) word that best describes the following images.

MEASURE OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

- is a single value that attempts to describe a set of data by identifying the central position
with the set of data.

MEAN
- is the average of numbers

I. ABSTRACT

MEDIAN

The Median is a measure of central tendency that is the middle value or the middle term in a data
set that has been ranked in increasing (or decreasing) order. It is most appropriate to use when
the data has an extreme value, because the median is not affected by the data.

Steps in Finding the Median

1. Arrange the data in an array form (least to greatest or greatest to least)
2. Identify the Middle number/term.
Case 1: Number of observations is odd
- The middle number is the Median.
Case 2: Number of observations is even
- Get the sum of the two middle number and divide it by two.
The quotient is the Median.
Example 1:
Find the median of the following.

95 93 65 90 64 69 93 66 92

Solution:

1. Arrange the data in an array form (least to greatest or Position Score

greatest to least)
9 95
2. Identify the Middle number/term.  8 93
Case 1: Number of observations is odd 7 93
- The middle number is the Median. 6 92
5 90
4 69
3 66
2 65
Therefore, the Median is 90. 1 64

Example 2:
Below are the grades of 10 students in Mathematics. Find The median.
95 93 65 99 90 64 69 93 66 92
Solution:
Position Score
1. Arrange the data in an array form (least to
greatest or greatest to least) 10 99
9 95
2. Identify the Middle number/term.  8 93
Case 2: Number of observations is even 7 93
6 92
92+90 182 5 90
= =91
2 2 4 69
3 66
2 65
Therefore, the Median grade is 91. 1 64

ANALYSIS
From the Video,
 Which is more reliable to use on the last scenario? Why?
 When is the best time to use the median as a measure of Central Tendency?

II. ACTIVITY (THINK – PAIR & SHARE)

Breakout Room
Directions: Do as indicated.
1. Find the median of
3, 13, 7, 5, 21, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29
2. The Doran family has 5 children, aged 9, 12, 7, 16 and 13. What is the age of the
middle child?
3. The Jameson family drove through 7 states on their summer vacation. Gasoline
prices varied from state to state. What is the median gasoline price?
$1.79, $1.61, $1.96, $2.09, $1.84, $1,75, $2.11

III. ASSESSMENT
A. TRUE or FALSE
Directions: Identify if the Statement is True or False. (1 point each)
1. Median is the most appropriate to use when the data has an extreme value.
2. The mean is the middle value or the middle term.
3. The Median of the data set: 5, 4, 3, 9, 10 is 3.
4. The Median of the first six even natural numbers is 7.
5. The median is one of the measures of Central Tendency.
B. PROBLEM SOLVING
1.  Erick has gotten the following grades on his tests: 87, 95, 76, 87, 85, 77, 90,
87, and 88. Find the Median. (5 points)
