This document is a checklist for commissioning surge arrestors. It lists mechanical checks, visual inspections, and electrical tests to perform, including checking for physical damage, tight bolted connections, manufacturer specifications, grounding connections, nameplates, and insulation resistance. Measurement of leakage current and dissipation factor are also electrical tests to perform. Space is provided for recording completion of checks and any remarks.

Item Description Done Remarks
1. Inspect for physical damage or defects. 2. Check tightness of all bolted connections (torque wrench method). 3. For multi-unit stacks, check that the physical arrangement of the units are erected according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Check that each arrester is provided with one grounded pad. Check the connection between surge arrester and discharge 4. Counter stranded copper conductor and check its size. Check the connection between discharge counter and grounding grid is stranded copper conductor and check its size 5. Check nameplate. 6. Check that lighting impulse classifying current of surge arrester is not less than 10kA. 7. Check that impulse counter and leakage current meter glasses are not broken or cracked. Check it is with 5- digit cyclometer dial. Check it is not resettable and Check it capable of registering up to 5 discharging per second. The scale is 0-50 mA /peak /√2 (nonlinear scale)
