Safety is
simple and easy to do
4
Let’s talk about
Behavior Based Safety…

Science

5
What is the Science & History behind
Behavioral Safety?

• Based on over 40 years of

scientific research.
• Long history of successful
implementations.
• Founded on principles of
fundamental human
psychology.
2 (two) technical background of
BBS

• B. F. Skinner – Developed the concept of Operant

Conditioning… Organisms are motivated by how their
behavior OPERATES on the environment.

• Pavlov – Developed the concept of associative

learning – Organisms are motivated through paired
stimuli.

7
Behavior Based Safety is :

• A safety process that focuses on

behavior rather than conditions
• A chance to effectively and
efficiently manage the safety
process through the ownership of
management with the
involvement of employees
ANTECEDENT

The A,B,C’s BEHAVIOR

Of Human Behavior

CONSEQUENCES
ANTECEDENTS

• Occur before
behaviour Examples:
Rules and Procedures, Tool and
• Provide Equipment, Information, Sign, Decision.
instructions Skill, Knowledge, Training, Expectation

• Cue behaviour
BEHAVIOR
• Desirable behavior
–job behavior which meets expectations and
requirements
–complies with all safety rules all of the time
( safe behavior)

• Undesirable behavior
–job behavior which does not meet
expectations and requirements
–fail to comply with all safety rules (Unsafe
Behavior)
CONSEQUENCES

• Are either Positive (+) or

Negative (-) for the
behaviours
• Predict the probability
of future behaviour
• Occur after the
behaviour
• Are too powerful to be
left to chance
Why using Behavior Based Safety( BBS) ?
THE FUNDAMENTAL OF BBS

• Integrity
• Culture
• Communication
• Observation
• Feedback
• Reinforcement
• Habit Formation
2 FRAMEWORK OF BBS

IMPLEMENTATION OBSERVATION-
PROGRAM FEEDBACK
PROGRAM
Framework Implementation program ;

Asessmen/evaluation level (maturity level)

Supporting and ownership stake holder
Training :
identify and knowing safe behavior
Observer: how to conduct observation
Identification critical safe behavior
Set up baseline indicator

Correction “barrier”
Monitoring

BENEFIT

COMPANY EMPLOYEE
√ PROFIT
√ PRODUCTIVITY
√ CULTURE

COMPANY
√ FAMILY
OPORTUNITY

√ SAFE WORKING
PLACE

EMPLOYEE
√ There is inadequate management system in the
work place

√ Leadership - Less of Management

Commitment and involvement

√ Lack of awareness among employees

√ Safety is not part of daily operations

√ Lack of observer training

√ Design the BBS Process

CONCLUSION

COMMITMENT IS
ABSOLUTELY NEEDED
