Chapter 2
Discussion Questions
1. Why don’t the pigs like the pet raven Moses’ stories about Sugarcandy
Mountain?
Ans: This is because they knew if he makes it sounds like dying is pleasant, the
animals won’t mind sacrificing their lives and rebel until the next generation.
2. Think about the events that began the Revolution - Jones’ mismanagement of
the farm, hungry cows, violence by the human beings - as well as all the thinking,
teaching, planning, and organizing that the pigs did. In your opinion would it have
been possible for the Revolution to have happened without Animalism?
Ans: In my opinion, without ever a change in any type of society, like the animals
in this book, nothing would take place. With all the planning and different
qualities applied on each animal, the revolution had taken place else humans
would still be doing the same things with animals like slaughtering, etc.
3. The words Orwell uses to describe the morning after the revolution are very
descriptive. What sort of words and images does he use? What does he want us
to think about the farm?
Ans: In the novel, Orwell uses words like “gazed” or “ecstasy”, which convey his
sentiment to the reader. Along with that, Orwell creates an image of the
countryside, making it idyllic and idealized. Using phrases like “sweet summer
grass” or “rich scent” allows him to depict the environment in the book. Finally,
he wants to show the significance of the Russian Revolution but in the
perspective of animals and to appreciate how animals take control of the farm.
4. The pigs begin to slowly take more control than the others. Can you find some
examples of this in Chapter II?
Ans: The pigs began to take control than the others by reading, writing, teaching,
distributing food to other animals, and calling all animals to harvest. They try
their best to show a few human qualities and try doing them themselves along
with motivating other anils to do it.
5. The animals change the name of the farm from Manor Farm to Animal Farm.
Why is this important? What does changing a name do for ideas, behaviour,
power, etc.? Can you think of any examples in the real world
Ans: By changing the name of the farm from Manor to Animal, they try to show
their dominance and try to express that they now own he land nobody else
(usually a human) could take it from them. The changing of the name even
shows about the real-life communist rule in Russia where the name changed
to Soviet Union.
