BOOK REVIEW

Year Published: 1945

I. Title: Animal Farm

II. Author: George Orwell

III. Author's Background: Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English
novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, social criticism,
opposition to totalitarianism, and support of democratic socialism.

IV. Summary

A. Setting

Animal Farm takes place on a farm in England, previously called Manor Farm, though when the animals
take it over, they rename it Animal Farm. The farm seems mythical in its otherworldliness and acts as a
metaphor for a period of political upheaval in Russia.

B. Characters

The characters in the novella, Animal farm are Napoleon, Snowball, Benjamin, Boxer, Squealer, Old
Major, Mr.Jones, Mr. Whymper, Mr.Pilkington, Mr.Fredrick, Mollie, Clover, Moses, and Muriel.

C. Rising Action

The rising action is when the animals throw off their human oppressors and establish a socialist state
called Animal Farm; the pigs, being the most intelligent animals in the group, take control of the
planning and government of the farm; Snowball and Napoleon engage in ideological disputes and
compete for power.

D. Climax

The climax of the novella occurs in Chapter 7, when Napoleon decides to sell the hens' eggs. The hens
finally recognize that the pigs are their antagonists, and they rebel. Their rebellion is brutally crushed
and the hens are executed.

E. Falling Action

The falling action in Animal Farm is when the pigs manipulate the animals to do what the pigs want. The
pigs also begin to act just like the farmers they had just overthrown.

F. Resolution/Ending

At the end of Animal Farm, the pigs are still in charge of the other animals after many years, and they
are starting to walk on two feet. The other animals seem to be not aware to the fact that although they
are no longer ruled by humans, they are still ruled, just by other oppressors.
V. Moral lesson/Reflection

The moral lesson their was power can cause corruptibility.Which means that all power can contain an
element of corruptibility. Perhaps the leaders, the pigs Napoleon and Snowball, started out well-
meaning, however once they realized that all of the animals listened to them without thinking, they
started to abuse their power.

VI. Analysis & Evaluation

Animal Farm depicts a group of animals who rebel against humans and become their own masters.
Things work smoothly at first, and the animals revel in their freedom and have equality. However, the
pigs become power-hungry and become the new oppressors of the animals and become
indistinguishable from humans.

VII. Conclusion

I like this book because of message in it that is power can cause corruptibility, which is true because
when there's power there is a chance that it will be use for corruption or abuse to use to other
individuals who doesn't have powers. That is why i liked this book because of a relatable message in it
and I think this could help others to be aware to those who had powers on what they do or what they
might do.
