Themes

What are themes?


Themes are recurring ideas a writer uses to convey an overall message. A theme
needs to be seen throughout a novel to be considered a theme.
Propaganda- Fear
1. Who are the characters who create fear? Humans, Pigs

2. How do they create fear?


3. Why do they create fear?
4. What does fear prevent some of the characters from doing?
5. How does the things above link to the historical context of the novel?

Propaganda

Name calling - Snowball is called a “ traitor”


Scapegoat - Snowball is used as the scapegoat for the 2nd half of the novel. This unites the
animals in diverting all their focus to fight the ‘common enemy’

Repetition - Four legs good, two legs bad’ . A way for the leaders to brainwash and
control the animals.

Plain Folks - Squealer lets the other animals believe that Napoleon’s idea is best for everyone.

Bandwagon- Majority are in support of Animalism. Boxer is upset that Mollie wants to break away
from the group.
Deception
The pigs acting as if they have the other animals best interest at heart.

Who are the animals that deceive the farm animals?


Power and Authority/ Control
Tyranny and dominance capture the essence of how power is abused.

Tyranny is displayed by humans who exercise their control over the other animals.
Chapter 1

Humans are careless in their treatment of the animals

Napoleon controls the other farm animals.


Exploitation
Situational Irony

The exploited becomes the Exploiters.

The pigs would have been bred specifically for slaughter and as such, their lives
would have been short. The readers would believe for this reason that the pigs
would fight again such treatment, However, it is the pigs who work the other
animals like slaves. Napoleon orchestrates Boxer’s death.

The birds did not understand Snowball's long words, but they accepted his
explanation, and all the humbler animals set to work to learn the new maxim by
heart.

Injustice and Inequality
“All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than some”

This statements encapsulates that equality never existed.

Equality was perhaps an illusion created by the pigs to have control over the other
animals of Animal Farm.
Corruption
Old Major’s speech outlines the oppressive nature of men
