This Service Bulletin applies to CFM56-7B engines that have operated more than
50 percent of their departures from within India.

B. Description

This Service Bulletin provides information on reduced inspection intervals. CFM

has gathered field experience on CFM56-7B engines operating in India and found
distress due to sand, dust, and dirt ingestion into the core engine flowpath. The
HPT blade airfoils have experienced leading edge (LE) oxidation and cracking
that, if undetected, can propagate to cause airfoil separation. A reduced on-wing
borescope inspection interval can help to prevent this from occurring. During
component repair, additional blade inspections are to be performed to improve
post-repair reliability.

C. Compliance
Category 2

CFM recommends that you do this Service Bulletin as soon as possible without
effect on revenue service but with the criteria that follows:

. Perform the inspection plan defined within paragraph 3., ACCOMPLISHMENT

INSTRUCTIONS. These inspections initiate when the HPT blades have
accumulated in the defined environment 4,800 cycles of operation for
CFM56-7B27 engine series and 6,400 cycles of operation for all other engine
series. For engines that have already accumulated more than these thresholds
in this operating environment, perform this inspection within the next 400 cycles.
Impact C:

This recommendation is to address a condition that may result in a

Non-Event operational disruption, Unscheduled Engine Removals (UER),
Out-Station-Removals or Aircraft on the Ground (AOG).
NOTE: This Service Bulletin can be accomplished on wing.

This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability or performance of your CFM
product, or to help prevent the occurrence of the event or condition described in this
Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate in the bulletin, that decision
will be taken into consideration by CFM in evaluating future product performance
issues that may arise in the operator’s fleet.

D. Concurrent Requirements

None.
E. Reason

(1) Objective:

To improve reliability and maintainability.

(2) Condition:

High air temperatures and sand, dust, and dirt ingested into the engine core
of the engine have been observed to accelerate the HPT blade airfoil LE
oxidation and cracking that can lead to airfoil separations.

(3) Cause:

Sand, dust, and dirt ingestion into the engine core from continuous operation
in India. For HPT blades that meet the defined India operation cyclic criteria
and are then removed and repaired during engine shop visit, the fatigue
damage accumulated is not eliminated by component repair. The fatigue
damage will continue to accumulate once returned to operation.

(4) Inspection:

CFM recommends these reduced borescope inspection intervals so operators

can identify distress to HPT blades and monitor the condition to avoid
operational issues. Inspections during component repair are also added.

(5) Substantiation:

Substantiation is by fleet experience and shop overhaul findings.

F. Approval

The technical content of this Service Bulletin is approved by the FAA and under the
Authority of DOA No. EASA.21J.086.

G. Manpower

After you get access to the HPT module or HPT blades, you will need approximately
1.5 man-hours to do the inspection portion of this Service Bulletin.

H. Weight and Balance

Weight and balance are not changed.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

A. General

(1) For CFM56-7B engines operating more than 50 percent of their departures
from within India, do the on-wing inspection task that follows:

(a) Do a borescope inspection of the LE of the HPT blades. Refer to the

Boeing 737-600/-700/-800/-900 AMM, 72-00-00, INSPECTION/CHECK,
Subtask 72-00-00-210-056-F00 and do as follows:

1 For all CFM56-7B27 engine series (-7B27, -7B27AE, etc): Start no

later than 4,800 accumulated cycles on the oldest HPT blade in the

set for this environment. Do this task again at 5,600 cycles and then
at intervals of 400 cycles thereafter.

2 For all other engine series: Start no later than 6,400 accumulated
cycles on the oldest HPT blade in the set for this environment. Do
this task again at 7,200 cycles, 8,000 cycles, and then at intervals
of 400 cycles thereafter.

NOTE 1: The 4,800 cyclic threshold must be applied to operating

engines, or re-rated engines that were initially operated, at
the CFM56-7B27 engine series rating.

NOTE 2: For engines that have already accumulated more than

these thresholds in this operating environment, this
inspection should be done within the next 400 cycles.
3 For HPT blades that meet the India operation cyclic criteria specified
above and removed and repaired during engine shop visit, then
subsequently returned to operation in India, continue with the
reduced borescope inspection interval applicable before the engine
shop visit.
4 For HPT blades that meet the India operation cyclic criteria specified
above and removed and repaired during engine shop visit, then
subsequently returned to operation outside of India, continue with a
reduced borescope inspection interval of 800 cycles.

(b) Refer to the Boeing 737-600/-700/-800/-900 AMM for serviceability

requirements.

(c) Deleted.

(2) For CFM56-7B engines that operated within India and are routed for shop
visit, do as follows:

(a) If the HPT blades have accumulated more than 5,000 cycles since new
(CSN) of operation and 2,500 or more of the total flight departures
were from within India, when routed for repair, request inspection of
the leading edge internal rib for evaluation of crack initiation and repair
acceptability as specified in RD 150-1551. To make sure that the repair
facility knows that the inspection is necessary, request inspection in
RD 150-1551 be done on your repair request documentation. The
HPT blades that pass CFM56-7B ESM serviceability inspections and
the inspections as specified in RD 150-1551 will be identified by an X
marked after the cycle count identification. For these HPT blades, when
returned to operation, use the on-wing borescope inspection interval as
specified in paragraphs 3.A.(1)(a)3 and 3.A.(1)(a)4.
