SERVICE BULLETIN
ENGINE - General (72-00-00) - Critical Part Configuration Management and Critical
Influencing Parts

NOTE: This Service Bulletin can be accomplished in shop or on wing.

D. Concurrent Requirements
None.

E. Reason

(1) Objective:

CLARIFY THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONFIGURATION OF CRITICAL

INFLUENCING PARTS INSTALLED WITH CRITICAL PARTS.

To improve the maintainability.

(2) Condition:

ATA Chapter 05-00-00 of the Engine Shop Manual lists the rotating
parts and static structural parts identified by the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety
Agency (EASA) as Critical Parts. The Airworthiness Limitations
contained in Sections 05-11 and 05-12 have been substantiated
to the Certificating Authorities based on engineering analysis
that assumes this product will be operated and maintained using
the configurations, procedures, and inspections provided in the
Instructions for Continued Airworthiness supplied with this product
by the Type Certificate holder. For Critical Parts, and parts
that influence Critical Parts, any repair, alteration or other
maintenance not technically substantiated by the Type Certificate
holder, or its licensees, or any replacement of such parts not
supplied by the Type Certificate holder, or its licensees, can
introduce differences that may materially affect these limits.
CFM recommends the use of only CFM-approved replacement parts and
repairs.

Owners, operators and maintenance providers may not have full

traceability of critical part operating configurations including
all parts that influence critical parts.

(3) Cause:

In 2012, a list of Critical Influencing Parts (CIP) was added

to the ESM Chapter 05-00-00 Airworthiness Limitations section.
CIP are those parts that analysis and experience have shown can
directly or indirectly influence the boundary conditions of the
“lifing” system used to determine the critical part’s Airworthiness
Limitations. Questions have been raised regarding how to handle
critical parts whose past CIP operating configuration cannot be

confirmed due to failure to track all CIP prior the 2012 change to
the ESM.

(4) Improvement:

This SB provides CFM guidance each time maintenance is performed on

a critical part, to address the gap when a complete configuration
data for CIP for a prior installation(s) of the critical part is
not available.

(5) Substantiation:

Substantiation is by analysis and by Fleet experience.

F. Approval
The technical content of this document is approved by the FAA and under
the authority of DOA No. EASA.21J.086.

G. Manpower
No additional man hour is necessary to do this Service Bulletin.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

When complete configuration data for CIP subset for a prior installation(s)
of a critical part is not available or is known to have been non-CFM
approved, existing Engine Shop Manual part level inspections of the Critical
Part may be used. This approach is applicable ONLY for the subset of CIP
listed in Table 1.

NOTE: Catalog sequence number (CSN) base number will only be listed. Base
CSN numbers with an alpha suffix will not be displayed.
