he UPES school of Law was established in 2007 and strives to become a center of excellence in legal education.
SoL prides itself on its exceptional pedagogy, carefully crafted curriculum and unique instructional methods
such as simulation and live client-based teaching. SOL offers specialized courses which include Energy Laws,
Corporate Laws, Cyber Laws, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Taxation Laws, Medical and Forensic Law,
Media and Entertainment Law and several others.

The School of Law, a wing of UPES, envisages an assemblage of specialized legal professionals who are able to
contribute to more and more diverse field wherein courses embrace energy law, company law, cyber law,
banking, finance and specializations in material possession rights. It had been ranked among the highest 25 law
colleges in Asian country in 2021 by the National Institutional Rankings.

About the Moot Court Association

The Moot Court Association (MCA) , a student committee of faculty of Law is entrusted with fostering,
administering and facilitating mooting activities and upholding the benchmark of excellence that the university
has set for itself.

The goal of the committee is to ensure dynamism in subject matter and delivery of content at every event to
match the trends of contemporary circuits in the country. Our primary roles include planning, organizing and

executing Internal, National and International Moot Court Competitions, developing future mooters, as well as
to inculcate an interest in mooting in the university.

MCA follows a policy of encouraging participation in mooting from all batches, organizes large-scale
workshops and demonstrations to vary them to seek out the strategy of mooting and arranges for interactive
sessions with practiced mooters and litigators from previous batches.

The committee organizes a National Insolvency condition Law Moot with Surana & Surana International
Attorneys, a number one Indian firm, and one International Moot Competition, the UPES Dr. Paras Diwan
Memorial International Energy Law Moot Court Competition with the Paras Diwan Foundation once a year to
celebrate the bequest of Dr. Paras Diwan, associate Indian jurist par excellence. The moot is the only ‘Energy
Law’ focused event conducted within the country and witnesses’ participation from prime law colleges
throughout the country and abroad.

 About the Competition

Surana & Surana And UPES School of Law National Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition has been
conceived with the aim of creating opportunities for learning the development of jurisprudence on emerging
trends in Insolvency Law besides developing cutting-edge skills in research, writing, and advocacy.

UPES School of Law is proud to announce its fifth edition of “Surana & Surana and UPES School of Law
National Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition, 2022-23” in association with its esteemed joint organizer
Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai scheduled from October 14th, 2022, to October 16th, 2022.

Surana & Surana and UPES School of Law National Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition has been formed
with the aim of making opportunities and platform for discussion of developing jurisprudence on rising trends
in financial condition Law besides developing fashionable skills in analysis, writing, and support.

Since its commencement , the competition has grown exponentially with wonderful participation from
everywhere the country. The university has been a bunch with utmost zeal and drive for all of the past editions,
and plans to continue the tradition with identical heart for data this year too

 About the Drafters

We would like to extend our earnest gratitude to the three drafters of our Moot Proposition, alumni of our own
UPES School of Law.

Mr. Kumar Saurab Singh (B.A LL.B. (Hons.) is a Partner in a Banking & Finance , Restructuring &
Insolvency Practice Group in a Mumbai Office. He has significant experience in all forms of debt financing,
including asset financing, project financing, trade financing, cross-border financing and securitization. It gives
us immense pride to mention that he has been identified as a “Recommended lawyer” for Banking and Finance
by Legal 500. He has been recognized as an astonishing lawyer for the Khaitan & Co , ranked as Tier II Indian
Law Firm for Banking & Finance in the Asian – Pacific Chambers.

Mr. Rohit G Jayaraman (B.A. LL.B (Hons.) is a Counsel in the Investment Fund practice group in the
Mumbai office. He has represented and advised the well renowned clients like, he has advised Embassy Group
on the establishment of a platform with Ivanhoe Cambridge to undertake investments ; and advised Lighthouse
Canton on the establishment of a platform with Ivanhoe Cambridge to undertake investments.

Mr Ashwij S Ramaiah is a senior advocate at Khaitan & Co. based in New Delhi, NCT. He is the founding
editor in the Corporate Distress and Survival Law Review. He had been previously ranked 1st in the All India
Law Entrance Test ('AILET'). He is also an Associate with the National Law Schools of India University,
Bangalore.

 I Surana & Surana And UPES School of Law National Insolvency Law Moot Court
Competition,2018
Moot Court Association, School of Law had successfully organized the first edition of “Surana & Surana And
UPES School of Law National Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition, 2018’ in association with esteemed
joint organizer Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai & New York. The competition was organized
from September 28, 2018, to September 30, 2018. Our Knowledge Partner AIR Law Academy & Research
Centre provided Winners, Runners-up and Team Placed Third with AIR subscription worth Rs, 1,20,000 each.
Our media partner Lawctopus, no. 1 information portal among law students; helped in publicizing the event and
making it of great magnitude.

The Inaugural function was graced by Hon’ble Justice U.C. Dhyani, Chairman Public Service Tribunal,
Dehradun & former Judge Uttarakhand High Court, India. The Chief Guest for the valedictory ceremony was
Dr. V.S. Surana, CEO and Partner, Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai & New York. The
valedictory ceremony was also graced by our Guest of Honour, Advocate Sumant Batra, Managing Partner and
Head, Kesar Dass B. & Associates; and Dr. Mamta Suri, Executive Director, Insolvency & Bankruptcy Board
of India.

The moot team from New Law College, BVDU, Pune was adjudged Winners while the moot team from
Hidayatullah National Law University were adjudged, runners-up. Several other categories of awards were also
bestowed upon on different teams/students in the valedictory ceremony.

II Surana & Surana And UPES School of Law National Insolvency Law Moot Court
Competition,2019
UPES School of Law in association with esteemed joint organizer Surana & Surana International Attorneys,
Chennai are organizing Second Edition of “Surana & Surana AND UPES School of Law National Insolvency
Law Moot Court Competition, 2019.”

The competition was successfully conducted from 28th September, 2019 to 29th September, 2019. The
competition aimed at learning development of jurisprudence on emerging trends in Insolvency Law . The
competition consisted of approximately .. team participants. After a smooth and successful event , the
Valedictory Ceremony was held on 29th September, 2019.

After a gnawing competition, the moot team from University Institute of Legal Studies, Punjab University was
adjudged as the winners, while the moot team from SASTRA University, Tanjavur, Tamil Nadu were adjudged,
runners-up. The best researcher was from the team of Rishab Shukla, Bharati Vidyapeeth, New Law College,
Pune and best student advocate from Deepsikha Saha, Bharati Vidyapeeth New Law College, Pune. The awards
for several other positions were also awarded to the achievers.

III Surana & Surana And UPES National Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition, 2020
The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, School of Law in association with Surana & Surana
International Attorney’s, conducted its 3rd edition of Surana & Surana and UPES National Insolvency Law
Moot Court Competition, 2020-21. The event took place virtually due to the pandemic.

The event was scheduled from 29th January, 2021 to 31st January, 2021 via online medium that is Google Meet
& Zoom Online. Approximately 26 teams took part in the competition. After a lot of scrutinizing among the
participants, the results of the competition were finally declared in the Valedictory Ceremony held on 31st
January 2021.

The moot team from Gujrat National Law University was adjudged Winners, while the moot team from
Symbiosis Law School, Noida were adjudged, runners-up. The best researcher was from the team of National
Law University, Odissa and best student advocate from AURO University, Surat. Several other categories of
awards were also bestowed upon on different teams/students in the valedictory ceremony.

IV Surana & Surana And UPES National Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition, 2021-
22

The Moot Court Association, School of Law successfully organized the “IV Surana & Surana And UPES
School of Law National Insolvency Law Moot Court Competition, 2021-22” in collaboration with our
respectable joint organizer Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai. The competition was scheduled
from February 4th, 2022, to February 6th, 2022.

Approximately 30 teams participated in this competition. After much deliberation among the participants, the
results of the competition were finally announced at the Valedictory Ceremony held on 6th February, 2022.

Going through a gnawing competition, the moot team from SVKM’’ Pravin Gandhi College of law ,were
adjudged the Winners , while the moot court team from Symbiosis Law School , Pune were adjudges the
runners-up. The award for the best researcher was awarded to the participant from the team of, Gujrat National
Law University, Gandhinagar, and the best student advocate was from Symbiosis Law School, Pune; other
categories of awards were also given to various teams in the valedictory ceremony.
