Mediation Competition, 2024

About the competition
We are delighted to announce the Sixth Edition of the RGNUL National Sports &
Entertainment Law Mediation Competition 2024, organised by the Centre for
Alternative Dispute Resolution, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab and
India’s leading law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. The competition is scheduled to take
place in online format from 29th to 31st March, 2024. The competition will host teams
from all across India, chosen based on the experience and accomplishments of the universities
in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution. The objective of the competition is to instill
soft-skills of mediation and commercial awareness in law students from across the globe, set to
practice law.

The Organisers

Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law(RGNUL), Punjab, was


established by the State Legislature of Punjab by passing the RGNUL,
Punjab Act, (Punjab Act No. 12 of 2006). The Act incorporated a
University of Law of national stature in Punjab, thereby fulfilling the need
for a Centre of Excellence in legal education in the modern era of
globalization and liberalization. In 2015, RGNUL became the first and the
only NLU to have been accredited by the National Assessment and
Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an ‘A’ grade. In 2018, RGNUL was
amongst the four NLUs to have been granted an autonomous status by
the University Grants Commission and has been ranked among the top
law schools in India in the National Institutional Ranking Framework
(NIRF).

The Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADR) at RGNUL has


been established to promote students’ and researchers’ interest in
Alternative Dispute Resolution constituting of Dispute Resolution
Methods like Arbitration, Negotiation, Mediation and Conciliation, and
it aims to promote and develop ADR as a vehicle for socioeconomic and
political justice. The ultimate objective of the Centre is to strengthen
the ADR mechanism in the country by emerging as a platform for
students to further their interest in the field.

MEDIA PARTNER

The Supreme Court Cases, or SCC, is the law report that


was started in 1969 and currently has over 400 volumes.
With a wide audience and extensive circulation, it is the
leading law report in India. The Supreme Court of India
and other courts in India, along with all other standard
works of the law, cite it 67% of the time. Other apex
courts, including the House of Lords, the South African
Constitutional Court, the VSSC, the Pakistan Supreme
Court, the Bay Supreme Court, and Malaysian courts, also
cite it. The entire legal community respects and recognises
the standard of legal reporting set by the SCC

The EBC Group, which was founded in 1942, is the


industry leader in legal publishing, with offices in several
Indian cities and abroad. In the 1940s, two brothers, the
late Shri C.L. Malik, and the late Shri P.L. Malik,
together laid the foundation of EBC group. EBC has
traditionally focused on publishing legal commentaries,
student texts, law reports, and digests. Nowadays, EBC
works in both print and electronic media. Supreme Court
Cases (SCC), SC Yearly Digest and Complete Digest,

Blog, EBC Explorer, and Practical Lawyer magazine are

ABOUT PREVIOUS Editions
The Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADR) of Rajiv
Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, in association with The
Peacekeeping and Conflict Resolution Team (PACT), organized a first-
of-its-kind Mediation Competition from 12–14 April, 2019. The
Winning Negotiating Team of Diyanshu Sinha and Adwitya Grover
(RGNUL) went on to represent India in IMSG 2019 and secured the
Gold Medal in the competition.

The 2nd Edition aimed to enhance advocacy and communication skills,


culminating in a final round between MNLU Mumbai and NLIU
Bhopal. MNLU Mumbai emerged victorious, represented by Mudit
Mahajan and Kartik Gupta in IMSG 2020. Vasundhara Mahajan
earned Best Mediator, while Gaurang Samel and Riya Punamiya from
GLC Mumbai and Roshni Mulchandani gained automatic qualification
for IMSG 2020.

The 3rd edition of the RGNUL National Sports and Entertainment Law
Mediation Competition successfully transitioned to a virtual format
while maintaining the high standards of previous editions. Thirivikram
Balaji and Shubhangi Nangunoori from SLS Hyderabad won the Best
Negotiation Team, with Sharmila Adyanthaya as the Best Mediator.
They represented India in the Singapore International Mediation
Competition 2021, along with Akul Khandelwal and Manasvi Ahuja
from SLS Pune and Tushmi Udyalak, who received automatic
qualification by the PACT Jury.

The 4th edition of the RGNUL National Sports and Entertainment Law
Mediation Competition, conducted virtually, showcased adeptness in
mediation from negotiating teams and mediators. In a closely contested
final, NLUO, Odisha secured Best Negotiating Team, with SLS Pune as
Runners-Up. Advait Raghunath from SLS Pune was named Best
Mediator, contributing to the event's grand success.

The 5th RGNUL National Sports and Entertainment Law Mediation


Competition 2023, hosted by CADR along with Indus Law and Dr.
P.C. Markanda Chair on ADR at RGNUL, took place from March 31
to April 2, 2023. With 32 different colleges participating, the
competition covered various nuances of sports and entertainment law.
Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur, secured the Best
Negotiating Pair, while NLSIU, Bangalore, won Best Mediator. The
event was declared as the biggest SEMC edition ever because of the
massive participation, setting a benchmark for future editions.
Glimpses from the Past Editions
ELIGIBILITY
Any student enrolled in Undergraduate Law degree programme in any University recognised by
the Bar Council of India as on 1st January 2024, is eligible to participate. Each participating
team shall consist of a Negotiating Pair (i.e., a client and a counsel) and a Mediator. The
composition of the team will not be permitted to change once the same has been entered and
submitted through the final registration form unless approved by the Organising Committee.

COMPETITION FORMAT
The competition will be held in an online mode through Webex. There shall be two preliminary
rounds followed by quarter final rounds, semi-final rounds, and a grand finale. The two
member Negotiating Team will comprise of a client and a counsel who will mandatorily have to
play both roles at least once during preliminary rounds.

REGISTRATION DETAILS
Institutes interested in sending across a team must fill the provisional registration form
latest by 20th February 2024. Upon selection by the Organising Committee, an email
confirming the slot of the institute along with the final registration form and payment link
will be sent on the concerned email ID (either of the registered ADR Centre or of the
point of contact). The institutes must complete the payment of registration fee and fill the
final registration form within a period of 72 hours of the receipt of confirmation of slot
mail.
The Registration fee for the competition is INR 3000/- per team (exclusive of 18% GST).
Please note that this fee is non-refundable. Final registration of the team is subject to the
successful payment of the registration fee within the stipulated time.
