ASSIGNMENT

Type of Arc Welding and list down its advantage and limitations.
• Types of arc welding
– Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
– Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
– Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
– Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW)
– Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

 Advantages
– Equipment flexible and portable
 Power generator can be mounted on trailer or small truck
– Low equipment cost
– Low maintenance
– Suitable for variety of metals
• Limitations
– High degree of welder skill required
 Welder continually moves electrode in three directions
– Time consuming slag removal
 Slag must be removed between each weld pass
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
 Advantages

– Cleanest welding process

 No slag or spatter
– Suitable for wider variety of metals than any other welding process
– Superior quality welds
• Limitations
– Slow metal deposition rate
– High degree of welder dexterity and coordination required
 Welder manipulates torch with one hand and adds filler metal with other
– Use of shielding gas makes it difficult to protect weld zone in windy conditions

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)

• Advantages
– Clean process
 No slag
– Very fast metal deposition rate
– Suitable for wide variety of metals
– Easy to learn
• Limitations
– Equipment costly and complex
 Less portable
– More difficult to use in hard to reach places
– Use of shielding gas makes it difficult to protect weld zone in windy conditions
Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
• Advantages
– Fast metal deposition rate
– Higher current gives better penetration into base metal
• Limitations
– Less portable
 Wire feeder and power supply must be close to welding
– Produces large volume of smoke and fumes
Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
• Advantages
– Produces no sparks, spatter, arc flash or smoke
– High weld deposition rate
– High quality welds, especially on thick weldments
• Limitations
– Not well suited for field work
 Primarily used for shop welding
– Position of weld must always be flat or slightly downhill
 Manipulators widely used in process
