Task/assessment brief:
Imagine that you have completed your internship as a management trainee of a well-established
business organization of your choice which is operating in Telecommunication or Tourism
industry in Sri Lanka and now you are supposed to submit a report to the management of your
company regarding the Strategic Position of the organization. You are required to conduct sufficient
investigation on the company’s background, strategic purposes and strategic environment. You may use
different newspaper articles, company web site, and annual reports of the company for last few years and
also you may find details from experts in the industry. Prepare a report covering following tasks.

Minimum of 10 -15 references should be used from accepted required reading, recommended reading
and recommended journals. Referencing should be done strictly using Harvard Referencing style.
Use academically valid references to validate your answer. Do not use Wikipedia, business dictionary
and other non-academic sources.

1. Explain the significance of key concepts of corporate strategy covering vision, mission, core
competencies and competitive advantage referring to selected business organization. (15
marks)

2. Explain the stakeholder influence on strategic planning in the selected business using
Mendelow’s Power/ Interest Stakeholder Matrix. (15 marks)

3. Evaluate how BCG matrix can be effectively used in strategic planning in the selected business.
(15 marks)

4. Analyse the internal strategic capabilities of the selected organization using Value chain and
VRIN frameworks. (25 marks)

5. Analyse the impact of external environmental factors on the selected business using PEST and
Porter’s Five Forces framework. (25 marks)

6. Based on the above analysis, summarize the findings using SWOT framework. (05 marks)
