The capital of the Grand Duchy was founded in about 963 and is the seat of Government and the official residence of the Grand Duke. Since the European Community for Coal and Steel (ECSC) was created in Luxembourg in 1952, a host of European institutions have settled here, the General Secretariate of the European Parliament, the European Court of Justice, the Court of Auditors, the European Bank of Investment and several Directorates of the European Commission, to name but a few. Luxembourg shaped its destiny as one of the Capitals of Europe not only through its central geographical location in the heart of Europe but also through its multi-lingualism. Apart from Luxembourgish, now the official language, French and German are also widely employed in the same function. Moreover, in the last 20 years, Luxembourg has developed into a powerful financial centre with its 168 financial institutions. This international momentum confers the city a cosmopolitan flair that is stunning in view of its size. Despite this intense political and economic progress, the city has maintained an atmosphere of contemplative tranquillity. The vast green spaces in the Ptrusse Valley and the City Gardens as well as the historical city centre, transformed almost completely into a pedestrian zone, provide the visitor with leisure, cultural experience and comfortable shopping. The historical importance of Luxembourg dates back to the Roman era. strategic value of the site in the middle of the 10th century and set up the Lucilinburhuc, which gave the city its name, on the Bock promontory. In the course of the centuries the fortress was widely extended with several ring walls, a host of tower-gates and peel towers, underground galleries and lots of bastions and forts. In the 17th century, after the French fortress builder Vauban enlarged the defence works so as to create one of the most powerful fortresses of Europe, Luxembourg came to be called Gibraltar of the North as well. Between 1867 and 1883, a great part of the fortress was dismantled following the decision of the Congress of London. The open spaces thus gained enabled the authorities to extend the city and increase its population swiftly. The excavations of the Lucilinburhuc on the Bock promontory, the old town, the casemates and the ruins of the fortifications were listed as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1994. They are very conspicuous to the visitor during an extensive walk or a guided bus tour. Several buildings in the old town deserve special attention, the Palace of the Grand Dukes with its Renaissance Front (1574), the Cathedral of Our Lady from the 17th century and a large array of houses in the Government District and on Fishmarket. Using the so-called Wenceslas Circular Walk, the visitor may also get to the picturesque Rham Plateau with its Tower of Jacob (old town gate from 1590) and the military barracks from the Vauban period or to the colourful town quarter of Grund with its medieval houses lining the Alzette river. In the city quarter of Kirchberg, the former 18th century Fort Thngen, situated immediately in front of the modern buildings of the European district, is a worthwhile stop for visitors. The three still preserved circular towers named Three Acorns and the foundation walls, uncovered in 1991, convey the might of the former fortress most impressively (today museum of the fortress and Muse dArt Moderne Grand-Duc Jean). The Vauban Walk, named after the famous military engineer Sbastien le Prestre de Vauban (1633 1707) covers a part of the Fortress City dating from the 17th to the 19th century, running from the Paffenthal to the edge of the Kirchberg Plateau via Fort Thngen. The Luxembourg City History Museum, equipped with a state-of-theart high-tech electronic guidance system, summarizes the urbanistic and architectural development of Luxembourg as well as the evolving living conditions of its inhabitants in a vividly descriptive manner. The National Museum of History and Art on Fishmarket houses several collections relative to different themes: classical and modern art, archeology, weapons and the fortress, coins, Luxembourg folklore and living culture from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century. The National Museum for Natural History naturmuse illustrates geological and geographical topics, an eco-database supplies information concerning the local fauna and flora.

Old city Exhibitions of classical, modern and contemporary art regularly take place in the Villa Vauban and in the Casino Luxembourg-Forum of Contemporary Art. Municipal theatres and several reputed independent drama groups offer tour productions or their own in German, French, Luxembourgish or English during the season. Nommern means the settlement near the water. The many forests crossed by rocky ridges (Nommerlayen) with a chapel nearby (Lourdes Chapel 1788) and old crosses attract walkers. Two viewpoints, the Kneibrecher and the site near the "Champignon" offer visitors to admire the wide valley. The Europa-Camping Nommerlayen campsite offers an open-air swimming pool and a Wellnesscenter. Cruchten is located in the Alzette valley. Listed houses, beautiful isolated farms, the plague chapel dating from 1661 and the old crosses are evidence of a long-established culture. A cycle track runs alongside the Alzette. 850 inw. h: 300 m. De gemeente Vichten bestaat uit de dorpen Vichten en Michelbuch en dankt haar internationale bekendheid aan een in 1995 ontdekt Romeins mozaek met de Negen Muzen rondom Homerus. Dit veelkleurig mozaek van een zeldzaam type, dat omstreeks 240 na Christus werd vervaardigd, vertoont de muzen in de volgorde die omstreeks 700 voor Christus werd vastgesteld door de Griekse auteur Hesiodus. Het mozaek werd ontworpen in een werkplaats te Trier en vormde de vloerbedekking van de ontvangstzaal van een belangrijke GalloRomeinse villa. Het is een mooi voorbeeld van de filosofische en literaire cultuur van de stedelijke elites van het Romeinse Galli. Een kopie van het mozaek is thans te zien tussen de kerk en het gemeentehuis. Signposted walks link the various villages in the commune, some of which are located on hilltops and others on the banks of rivers and streams flowing through picturesque valleys. Bourscheid 350 inh., like Kehmen 80 inh., Scheidel 20 inh., Schlindermanderscheid 120 inh. and Lipperscheid 180 inh. are situated on an open plateau. Diekirch situated on the borders of the river Sre and surrounded by pittoresque heights such as Haardt, Goldknapp, Seitert and Herrenberg is one of this small towns that satisfies the tourist which has an eye for the couleur locale (local color). It is the old quarter, now changed in a pedestrian zone with shops, cafs, old streets and small passages recently restored and last but not least a big open terras square in the midst of the center where in the summer public concerts, folklore and games follow each other, that attracts the tourist amazment and make them call for a good and genuine Diekirch Beer! Quite an other museum which is worthwile of a detour is the National Museum of Military History that with support of supersized dioramas brings back to memory the most significant events of the Battle of the Bulge 1944-1945. The National Museum for Historical Vehicles is unique in Luxembourg for its fabulous exhibits as well as for the early 20th century style Art Nouveau of the building itself. The beer museum is also enclosed here. After all Diekirch must live up to its reputation as a beer town! Diekirch also houses a new bee museum. When you are a lover of nature, Diekirch is offering you a great variety of possibilities to relax, kayaking and fishing, quite a ressort of cycling and mountainbike pists and marked footing paths, well provided with resting places. Siebenaler is a charming little village situated in the narrow valley of the river Pintsch. Roder is located on the slopes of the Our Valley and is a starting point for a walk through the Kasselslay. Drauffelt, with its railway halt, is ideal for walkers taking the train. The finishing point in Marnach, the largest of these villages, is the Schwaarzenhiwwel, marked by its tall radio masts. The area around Troisvierges, to the extreme north of the Ardennes Plateau, boasts a history going back more than two thousand years, and offers rest and relaxation in a delightful landscape of alternating forest and meadow. On the banks of the limpid river Woltz, Troisvierges has grown from being a tiny hamlet centred around an ancient cult worshiping the Three Virgins, and then at one stage an important railway centre, into a centre of commerce and craft. Located alongside the Roman road, Hautbellain has been a commercial centre since the 12th century. Basbellain entered history in the year 585, and boasts a long and varied past. Indeed centuries before that date, the Romans had built a major settlement there. The hamlets of Goedange and Biwisch are also steeped in history, both nestling in narrow valleys beside extensive forests. Huldange, on the northern slope of the Buurgplatz (at 559 metres the highest point in the Grand-Duchy) and Wilwerdange with Drinklange, along the main road, as well as villages situated on the hilltops, all invite the visitor to scour the wide Ardennes horizons. Its fine feudal manor dating back to the 9th century, seat of the Counts of Vianden and handed down to the dynasty of Orange-Nassau, is a remarkable medieval building, a real architectural jewel unrivalled in the Ardennes and the Eifel and which is mostly restored. An outer wall with guard towers encircles the town. The parish church with its 2 naves (former Trinitarian church), built in 1248 in Gothic style (recently renovated), is one of the most significant religious buildings in the country. The former Trinitarian cloister, dating from around 1250, houses a lapidary museum. The Museum of popular Art, in a former mansion, captures the exact image of 18th and 19th century interiors. In an adjoining house there is the Doll and Toys Museum. The house where Victor Hugo lived during his exile in 1871 is a literary museum now. The chairlift climbs to a height of 450 metres and offers tourists a wonderful excursion with splendid views. Close to Vianden, the Our dam and the hydro-electric power station are worth a visit. The surrounding woods are crisscrossed with numerous footpaths where complete solitude and calm can be found among rocks, waterfalls and view points. Echternach is especially well-known for the dancing procession, the only one of its kind in the whole world (Whit Tuesday) and attracts thousands of pilgrims. The old patrician houses, the narrow streets and the ancient ramparts have helped Echternach to retain a remarkable medieval atmosphere. The old Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 7th century by St. Willibrord, has four wings of 75 metres, built round a large square courtyard. The Basilica with its crypt is the most important religious building in the country. Climate
The Grand Duchy enjoys a temperate climate without extremes. It profits from the beneficial and moderating influence of the sea, but the sea winds (SW and NW) shed a great part of their moisture before reaching the Luxembourg frontiers. The period from May to mid-October is particularly suitable for vacations. While July and August are the warmest, May and June are the sunniest months. September and October often offer an Indian Summer. For the celebrations by the end of the year the weather gets dry, cold and snowy.

Foreign currencies
Luxembourg is one of the 12 European states to join the Single Currency. Travellers from abroad may without any limitation import and export banknotes and travellers cheques in euro and foreign currencies (out currencies like the dollar). Foreign money and travellers cheques may be freely exchanged. At present some 184 approved banks from different countries are established in the Capital, which is the seat of the Luxembourg Bourse. Some are also branches. They are open in the morning and in the afternoon from Monday to Friday, some even between 12 a.m. and 2 p.m. as well as on Saturday morning. An official bureau de change operates at the Luxembourg airport.

Public transport
The train and bus network in the Grand Duchy covers more than 870 miles. Practically every locality has bus connections. Tickets: A) Network ticket costing 4,60 c, valid for one day from punching until 8 a.m. the next day. The 5-tickets-leaflet costs 18,50 c. B) For small trips you can buy short distance tickets at 1,20 c each, valid for one hour. You will have a 10 ticketspack for 9,20 c. Conveyance of bicycles at 1,20 c for all distances (only in trains). Times tables (for bus and train) are on sale at the stations and different book shops. Departure and arrival hours of public trasport are found at the bus stops and at the stations. The information office at Luxembourg station is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Phone 4990-4990. Road vehicles admitted without customs documents Temporary importation of any road vehicles, including carvans and trailers, applies in the following cases: a) if they are imported by a person established outside the customs area of the European Union and b) if they are used for their private use and c) if they are registered outside the customs area of the European Union in the name of a person established outside the Union. Vehicles imported temporarily without payment of duty may be driven by persons other than the owner or the holder of the vehicle documents, provided that they normally reside abroad. If re-exportation is not guaranteed, these vehicles may stay in the customs area of the European Union for a continuous or non-continuous period of 6 months in any twelve-month period. In this case, temporary importation shall be allowed without payment of bonds or compliance with formalities. The same provision applies to leisure aircraft registered for international travel and pleasure boats. This simplification of customs procedures also applies to spare parts, accessories and equipment normally imported with the means of transport. Road vehicles for which customs documentation is required This applies to vehicles which do not simultaneously fulfil all the conditions mentioned above. Temporary importation is allowed provided that the appropriate single customs documents IM5, EU5, COM5 or a travel carnet or a triptyque is at hand.

Luggage of persons established abroad Temporary exemption from customs duties and taxes shall apply to personal effects of travellers from third countries and transported about their person or in their luggage: 1. clothing, underclothes and toilet articles; 2. the objects listed below: - personal jewellery, - two cameras plus a reasonable quantity of film and accessories, - two cine-cameras plus a reasonable quantity of film, - one portable projector for cine films or transparencies, - a pair of binoculars, - a portable musical instrument, - a portable record player with records, - a portable sound recording or playback machine (including dictaphone) with tapes, - a portable radio, - a portable television set, - a portable video camera and recorder, - a portable typewriter, - a portable calculator, - a portable computer, - a wheelchair for a disabled person, - a baby carriage, - sports equipment such as a tent or other camping equipment, fishing tackle, mountaineering equipment, two hunting weapons with cartridges, bicycle without engine, canoe or kayak less than 5,5 m long, skis, tennis rackets, wind surfing board and accessories, hang-glider. - a portable dialysis machine and similar medical equipment as well as disposable articles imported to be used with this equipment. Other objects are only admitted with a temporary customs document, on deposit of any duties and taxes involved. Goods from the customs area of the European Union, but not belonging to the fiscal territory, are admitted on exemption, provided that a) they are destined for re-exportation, without undergoing any procession. b) they are in free circulation in the exporting country,

c) they were acquired according to the tax conditions of the internal market, and did not benefit from any exemption whatever, d) they are not consumable goods, e) they belong to a person established outside the fiscal territory of the European Union. However, temporary tax-free admission is not granted if the goods were not acquired in accordance with the taxation rules in that country, or have benefited from any exemption whatever, and the importer is not entitled to deduct the tax already paid. Personal effects coming from the VAT territory of the European Union are admitted without any restriction, provided they have not benefited from any exemption whatever.

The bus service of the city of Luxembourg connects the airport with the centre of town (youth hostel) and the station (price: 1,20 c and 1,20 c for luggage). During peak hours, around noon, transport can be refused to those who carry much luggage. The price for taxi ride from the airport to the station is about 20 c.

The LUXEXPO Exhibition Centre

In the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, the tradition of trade fairs dates back to the 13th century. The first great international trade fair was held in 1922. Since then, trade has developed enormously. The new building of the Centre des Foires et des Congrs (Trade Fair and Conference Centre), with an area of 33 000 m2 offers possibilities of multi-purpose usage for conferences of all kinds, whether a meeting with a small number of participants or a seminar with an exhibition in parallel, attended by hundreds of participants. With an area of 4 000 m2, thanks to a modular design, the meeting spaces can be arranged individually.
