Debre Berhan (ደብረ ብርሃን)
INTRODUCTION
Debre Berhan (ደብረ ብርሃን) is a Holy & Historic City where Light descended from heaven.
Debre Birhan is a city in central Ethiopia. Located in the Semien Shewa Zone of Amhara
Region, about 120 kilometers north east of Addis Ababa on Ethiopian highway 2, the town
has an elevation of 2,840 meters, which makes it the highest town of this size in Africa.total
area 146.3km
ORIGINE
Debre Birhan was founded by Emperor Zara Yaqob, in response to a miraculous light that
was seen in the sky at the time. Believing this was a sign from God showing his approval for
the death by stoning of a group of heretics 38 days before, the emperor ordered a church
built on the site, and later constructed an extensive palace nearby, and a second church,
dedicated to Saint Cyriacus.
Climate
Debre Birhan is one of the coolest cities found in the subtropical zone of Ethiopia. The city
has a typical subtropical highland climate . Debre Berhan is classified under Dega agro-climatic
zone. The average annual temperature of the city during day and night hour is 20.7 °C and
8.2 °C respectively with precipitation 964mm.
Demographics
Based on the 2022 national census conducted by the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia
(CSA), this town has a total population of 87,408.

Debre Berhan is surrounded by farmland, since the city has a high share of households
that rely on income from agriculture.

In 1986, total boundary area of the town was 4.41 km2. In 2000, the town boundary was
increased by 25.14% from 1986. Total boundary area was 5.89 km2 in 2000. The boundary was
increased 31.48% from 2000 as area increased to 8.59 km2 in 2009. In 2018, the area increased
to 12.79 km2. Therefore, it was found that 65.53% boundary area was expanded from 1986 to
