GRADE 11
LESSON 5

COMPUTER MOTHERBOARD
(Continuation)
A. MOTHERBOARD PARTS AND FUNCTIONALITIES
Objectives:
1. define motherboard and its function.
2. identify parts of motherboard and its functions.

B. COMPUTER MOTHERBOARD (cont..)

ATX (Advanced Technology Extended)

Power Connector – this is where you
connect the ATX power connector of power
supply. It supplies power to entire
motherboard.

IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) connector –

this is where you connect the other end of the IDE
cable where the other end is connected to hard
disk.
IDE is now replaced by SATA.

In PCI and PCI-X architecture, all of the

cards share parallel data lines to and from
the host. Differences between card-
speeds and slot-types regularly result in
• ‘PCIe x1’ connections have one data lane throttled data speeds.
• ‘PCIe x4’ connections have four data lanes In the PCIe architecture, each card has
• ‘PCIe x8’ connections have eight data lanes it’s own dedicated serial data connections
• ‘PCIe x16’ connections have sixteen data lanes (lanes) to the host. This allows each card
• ‘PCIe x32’ connections have thirty-two data connection to achieve a bandwidth
lanes (currently, these are VERY rare) independent of other cards that may be
active in the system.
Video card uses the following slots:
 PCI - Peripheral Component Interconnect – nowadays video card is not using this slot
anymore
 After PCI, new technology developed which is AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) but no
longer in use also.
 After AGP, here comes PCIe (peripheral component interconnect express) which widely
used by computer nowadays. PCIe type of video card uses 16x PCIe slot

PCI slots – this is where you put your sound card, LAN card and other cards.

Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor

battery. CMOS is an onboard, battery powered
semiconductor chip inside computers that stores
information. This information ranges from the
system time and date to system hardware settings
for your computer.

CMOS battery. Provides power to CMOS to

retain the information even in the absence of
electricity.

SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) slots.

This is where you connect your hard disk using SATA
cable
BIOS is firmware used to perform hardware
initialization during the booting process, and to
provide runtime services for operating systems and
programs. The BIOS firmware comes pre-installed
on a personal computer's system board, and it is the
first software to run when powered on.

System Panel – the front panel of the

computer case which consists of the Power
button, Reset button, Hard disk Led, and
Power Led are connected in this part of the
motherboard.

12V power connector - the 4 pin

connector of power supply is being
attach here to supply power to your
processor.

COMPUTER CHIP SETS

 These are communication bridges between the CPU and the peripherals connected to it.
These help CPU to communicate to the Memory and the I/O Ports.
Pair of Chips:
 Northbridge - inks the CPU to very high-speed devices, especially RAM and graphics
controllers.
 Southbridge - connects to lower-speed peripheral buses like PCI, USB, IDE, SATA,
BIOS, LAN, PS/2.
A. ACTIVITY 1
Identify what parts of motherboard is being ask. Write your answer in a separate sheet
of paper.

1. It provides powers to the processor only.

2. It provided powers to entire motherboard.
3. Communication bridges between the CPU and the peripherals connected to it.
4. In what part of motherboard does the Power button, reset button are connected?
5. It perform hardware initialization during the booting process, and to provide
runtime services for operating systems and programs.
6. Provides power to CMOS chip.
7. Date, time are stored in this chip.
8. This is where you connect the LAN card, sound card.
9. What chipset does the memory connected?
10. Give two parts of mother board that are connected in Southbridge.

B. ACTIVITY 2.
Direction. Write your answer in separate one (1) whole sheet of paper.
Explain following.

1. Explain the difference between PCI and PCIe.

2. Explain the advantages of SATA over IDE.
3. Explain the connection of Southbridge and Northbridge to CPU.
4. What will happen to the information stored in CMOS chip if you remove the
CMOS battery?

C. REMEMBER
Motherboard is continuously upgrading. New technologies is being presented like
SATA, PCIe and some motherboards don’t have Northbridge as it is now integrated in
CPU.
