Heat exchanger

Problems
• Problem-1
• A dilute pineapple juice is heated in a double pipe
heat exchanger from 28◦C to 75◦C by heat
exchanging with hot water flowing in shell in counter
current direction and is cooled from 95◦C to 85◦C.
Calculate the log mean temperature difference, and
compare with average temperature difference.
• Problem2
• Repeat the above for parallel flow arrangement
Problem 2.
A double pipe heat exchanger operates co currently with a cold fluid
entering the outer pipe at 20°C and exiting at 35°C . The hot water enters
the thin walled 2 cm diameter tube at 80°C and leaves at 40°C . The total
length of the tubes in the heat exchanger is 60 m. The convection heat
transfer coefficient is 25 W/m2°C on the cold fluid side (outer pipe) and 160
W/m2°C on the water (tube) side. Determine the rate of heat transfer in the
heat exchanger (a) before any fouling occurs and (b) after fouling with a
fouling factor of 0.0006 m2°C/ W occurs on the outer surface of the
tube(c)Mass Flow rate of the two fluids if the specific heat capacity of the
hot fluid is 4.31kJ/kg °C
Problem 3

A shell and tube steam condenser is to be constructed of 2.5 cm OD,2.2 cm

ID, single pass horizontal tubes with steam condensing at 54 ᴼC on the
outside of the tubes. The cooling water enters at 20ᴼC and leaves at 30ᴼC at
a flow rate of 1 kg/s.The heat transfer coefficient for condensation of steam is
7900 W/m2ᴼC. Calculate the tube length. If the latent heat of condensation is
2454 kJ/kg, calculate the condensation rate per tube. The properties of
water are specific heat 4.18 kJ/kgᴼC, viscosity 0.86x10-3kg/m s, thermal
conductivity 0.61W/m ᴼC. The heat transfer coefficient for flow in pipe may
be determined by the correlation
