D 2016 - 07 GENERAL COATING (ON METALS)
C REV4

1. SCOPE
This standard specifies the general decorative coating (*2) (hereinafter referred to as the coating)
to be applied to metal surfaces (*1) of parts for purposes of decoration and corrosion protection.
Notes:
(*1) Metal surfaces include the surfaces to which chemical conversion treatments such as film
formation are applied.
(*2) The coatings shall not include the following:
a) Coatings for vacuum deposition coating.
b) Coatings intended for directional reflection and fluorescence.
c) Coatings intended for electrical insulation.

2. TYPES
The coatings shall be categorized as defined in Table 1 according to the metal surface and quality
grade.

3. DRAWING INDICATION METHODS
The drawing indication methods shall refer to HES A 3009 (INDICATION OF COATING).

Scott Peterson 519866 12.12.2014 03:55 PM D201607 2
4. QUALITY
The coating shall be tested in accordance with Section 5 and shall conform to the requirements
specified in Attached Tables 1 and 2. Unless otherwise specified, this standard shall not apply to
those portions (*3) that are difficult to coat, which shall then comply with other standards,
separately stipulated.
Note (*3) Edges, deep indentations and elevations, joints, welded areas, inside of pockets, etc.

5. TEST METHODS
Test methods for the coatings shall conform to HES D 6501 (GENERAL TEST METHODS
FOR COATING) unless otherwise specified. For the requirements not specified, conform to the
agreement among the parties concerned. However, the coating tests on parts shall be carried out
on completed parts which have been manufactured in accordance with the relevant coating
specifications, on test samples taken from completed parts, or on test samples prepared using the
same materials and coating specifications as those for the completed parts.

6. INSPECTION
To inspect the coatings, tests shall be performed on items listed in Attached Tables 1 and 2
according to the requirements specified in Section 5, and the quality of the coatings shall
conform to the requirements specified in Section 4. The sampling methods, test items, and test
locations in lot inspections shall be based on the agreement among the parties concerned.

7. OTHERS
a) Paints and coating procedures for each coating type shall conform to the agreement by the
parties concerned.
b) When applying a new process or coating materials, obtain an approval from Honda Quality
Control Department (including R&D).
c) Paints shall contain pigments or dyes whose durability has previously been ensured through
outdoor weathering tests and long-term accelerated weathering tests. The long-term durability of
the paints in which dyes, especially, are toned shall be ensured.
