CONSTRUCTION OF BITUMINOUS
ROAD

1
DEFINATION OF COLD MIX

“ It is the composite material of aggregate ,cold

bitumen, and lime/ or cementitious products,
is then termed a cold mix”.

2
NECESSITY FOR INDIA
Reasons to avoid hot mix plant.

C.R.R.I (central road research institute)

specifications for cold mix.

3
MAIN ADVANTAGES OF COLD MIX
TECHNOLOGY
• Construction of binder course and wearing
course, using bitumen emulsion is feasible
in all weather including wet condition.
• Environment friendly technology due to
elimination of heating process.
• 10 % binder economy can be achieved in
comparison to hot mixes.

4
• Reduction propagation of cracks.

•The cost of construction is cheaper by about

10 - 15 % than the conventional bitumen.

•It will be beneficial for improving the rural

roads as less machinery are required.

Laboratory design of S.D.B.C(semi-
dense bituminous concrete) &
B.M(bituminous macadam)

Characterization of bitumen emulsion

The formulation of emulsion is
characterized as per I.S: 8887-2004 &
results are given in table below:

AREA’S SELECTED FOR FIELD TRIALS

• Field trials were conducted using bitumen

emulsion on three different climatic conditions :
• Jammu- Shrinagar highway NH-1A near
Patnitop(under snow bound area)
• Jowai-Badarpur road NH-44 near Silchar (Assam).
(under heavy rainfall)
• H-S road near Hanumangarh (Rajasthan).(under
desert climate)

9
Construction of B.M and S.D.B.C
using bitumen emulsion cold mixes

• Preparation of road surface.

• Preparation of cold mix.
• Application of tack coat.
• Transportation of cold mix.
• Spreading of cold mix.

Per formation of test sections

• The test sections of BM and SDBC with

cold mix laid in Rajasthan performed
satisfactory after one year (photo below).
Satisfactory performance was also observed
for other test section laid in Aizawl
(Mizoram) and near Srinagar (J&K)

USES OF COLD MIX FOR
MAINTENANCE OF FLEXIBLE
PAVEMENT
Cold mix technology can be used for repair of
patches and pot-holes even in the inclement
weather.

21
The major advantages of uses cold mixes for
maintenance of flexible pavement
• Uniform quality of mix with high stability (stable and durable
patches)
• Ease in application
• Proper bonding with existing surface
• Resistance to deformation, bleeding and cracking
• Resistance to stripping and resistance to pushing after placement
• 3-5 minutes time needed to apply materials for patching
• No wastage of materials.
• Minimum man power required.
• Repair is possible even in all adverse climates including wet
conditions
