STORY FOR PRELIMINARY ROUND

THE LEGEND of KELUD MOUNTAIN

Brawijaya was the king of Majapahit Kingdom. He had a daughter, her name was Dyah
Ayu Pusparani. She was very beautiful. Many young men fell in love with her.
However, she always refused their marriage proposals. King Brawijaya was sad. He
really wanted to see his daughter to get married.

“You have to get married soon, my daughter,” said King Brawijaya.

“I’m getting older, I know you are looking for a great husband. I have an idea, I’m going
to hold a competition. If a man can stretch Kyai Garudayaksa’s bow and lift Kyai
Sekardelima’s gong, he will be your husband," he continued.

Princess Dyah Ayu Pusparani was speechless. She knew her father really wanted her to
get married. She just hoped that she would marry a great man. She knew the bow and
the gong had supernatural power. So the winner must had supernatural power too.

One by one men tried to stretch the bow and lifted the gong. No one succeeded. They
were injured, their hands and backs were broken. King Brawijaya planned to stop the
competition. He thought no one could win the competition.

However, before he stopped it, a man came to him. “Don’t stop the competition now. I
haven’t tried it yet.”

Everybody was looking at him. He was very strange. His head was unlike human’s
head. He had a bull’s head.

“What’s your name?”asked the king.

“My name is Lembusura.” answer that man.

Then he tried to stretch the bow, he succeeded. The next test, he had to lift the gong.
Again, he succeeded. Everybody applauded. They all were amazed by his power.
However, Princess Dyah Ayu Pusparani was sad.

She never thought that she would marry a man who had a bull’s head. King Brawijaya
was also sad. But he had no choice. He had to keep his promise.

Later, he asked his men to prepare a wedding ceremony. The ceremony was getting
closer and Princess Dyah Ayu Pusparini was really sad. She really wanted to cancel the
wedding. She was thinking very hard. Finally she had an idea. She told his father.
“Father, ask Lembusura to make a well on the top of Kelud Mountain. The well is for
me to take a bath,” said Princess Dyah Ayu Pusparini.

King Brawijaya understood the plan. He asked Lembusura to go to the top of Kelud
Mountain. Lembusura agreed.

When he arrived, Lembusura dug the ground. He was digging until the hole was deep.
Suddenly, some soldiers pushed him into the hole. They buried him alive. Lembusura
was helpless. He could not do anything. Before he died, he cursed the King.

“King Brawijaya, wait for my revenge! I will destroy your kingdom!” cursed
Lembusura.

Everybody was so scared. They really believed that Lembusura would revenge to the
kingdom. Until now, every time Kelud Mountain erupts, people say that Lembusura is
doing his revenge!

THE LEGEND of SITU BAGENDIT

Nyai Bagendit was a widow. She was the richest person in the village. She had a
very big house fill with a lot of jewellery. She also had many servants working for her.
Nyai Bagendit was also known for her bad attitude. She did not like to help others.
Whenever the villagers needed some money, they borrowed the money from her.
However, when they returned it, the villager had to pay double. If they were not able
to return the debt, Nyi Bagedit would ask her servants to take the villagers belongings.
Nyai Bagendit also hated beggars. She thought that beggars were lazy people. She
never felt sorry to any beggars coming to her house.

So when the old beggar came to her house, Nyai Bagendit immediately to ask her to go.

"Go away you lazy old woman! Go out of my house!" said Nyai Bagendit.

"Please, Nyai, give me some money or just give me some food. I'm so hungry", Said
the beggar.

"Food? You asked for food? This is my house not a restaurant. Go now! I dont want to
see you here!" Nyai Bagendit then threw a stone to the old beggar.

The old beggar was very sad. She then said, "Nyai Bagedit, I know you are the riches
person in this village. You have anything but you never help other people. You are not
grateful to God. Wait for the punishment from God. You will be punished!"The old
beggar then left Nyai Bagedit's house.

"Ha ha ha! You are right. I'm the richest person here. So no one can punnish me, not
even God can punish me!" Nyai Bagendit was very arrogant.

Nyai Bagendit then went back to her big house. Not long after that, an earhquake
happened. Her house fell down.

Nyai Bagendit cried for help. "Help me! Somebody please help me!"

But nobody listened her crying for help. Nobody in the village felt the earthquake.
amazingly, the earthquake only happened in Nyai Bagendit's house. The land was
opened. It was so big that the entire Nyai Bagendit's house, and all her wealth were
gone. The villagers just wathes what happened to Nyai Bagendit and her house. They
were amazed. They knew that God punished Nyai Bagendit for behaving badly and
never helped other people. Slowly, the place where Nyai Bagedit's house stood
became lake. Since then, people named the lake as Situ Bagendit It means Lake of
Bagendit.

THE LEGEND of TOBA LAKE

There a village in Sumatra. There lived a farmer who diligently, although he has a small
rice field. He worked hard enough to get their needs. Actually he became old enough
to marry, but he still chose to live alone. In a sunny morning, the farmer was fishing in
the river.

"Hopefully today I got a big fish," the farmer whispered to himself.

Some time after the hook was thrown, that's fishhook wiggle. He immediately pulled

the hook. The farmers cheered after he got a big fish.


He was amazed at the beautiful colors of fish scales. Fish scales is yellow gold reddish.
Her eyes are rounded and prominent, emit incredible rays.

"Wait, don't eat me! I'll stay with if you do not eat me."

The farmer was surprised to hear the voice of the fish. Due to his surprise, the fish they
catch fell to the ground. Shortly later, the fish is turned into a beautiful sweet girl.

"I'm dreaming," thought the farmers.

"Don't be afraid, I am also a human like you. I owe you because you have been save me
from the curse," said that's girl.

"My name is Puteri, I don't mind to be your wife," she said urgently.

That's farmers nodded. And they become husband and wife. But, there was a promise
that must be agreed, that they should not talk about the origin of a fish Princess. If that
promise abandoned, then there will be a terrible accident.
After reaching the village, the villagers became excited, to see beautiful girl with
farmers.

"She may be a woman came down from heaven," they said.

The farmers feel very happy and peaceful. As a good husband, he worked hard to
cultivate their fields to meet their needs. Due his diligence in work, the farmers are
living without a shortfall in his life. Many people are jealous, and they spread the ugly
suspicion that could topple the farmer's efforts.

"I know that farmers must keep the evil spirit!" Someone said to her friends. It
was up to the ear Farmer and Puteri. But they do not feel offended, even the more
diligent work.

A year later, Farmer and his wife happiness increases, because the farmer's wife give
birth to a baby boy. He was named Putera. Their happiness does not make them forget
themselves. Putera grow into a healthy and strong child's. He was a sweet child but a
little naughty. He has a habit of making wonder both parents, that is always feeling
hungry. Food should be eaten 3 people can eat their own.

Over time, Putera always annoy his father. If told to help his parents work, he always
refused. The farmer's wife always reminds farmers to be patient over their child
behavior.

"Yes, I will be patient, even though,, he was our son!" Farmer said to his wife.

"Thanks God!,, You think like that. You was a good husband and a good father," said
Puteri to her husband.

Indeed, people say,, patience has limits. This is experienced by the farmers. One day,
Putera get a job delivering food and drinks to the field where his father was working.
But Putera does not fulfill its tasks. The farmer wait his son comes, while holding thirsty
and hungry. He immediately go to home. He saw Putera was playing ball. Farmers
became angry while pinch ear his son.

"Scallywag! Not know themselves! Son of fish!" curse of the farmers, without
conscious have the word taboo is.

After the farmers spoke those words, instantly his son and his wife vanished. Disappear
without trace and former. From the former stamp his feet, sudden gush of water are very
heavy and getting heavier. Farmers village and all the surrounding villages submerged.
Water overflowed is very high and wide forming a lake.The lake was eventually known
as Lake Toba. Meanwhile, a small island in the middle known as Samosir Island.

The Legend of Surabaya
(folklore from East Java)

A long time ago in East Java there were two strong animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was
a shark

and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea. Actually, they were friends. But when
they were hungry, they were very greedy. They did not want to share their food. They
would fight for it and never stop fighting until one of them gave up.

It was a very hot day. Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw
a goat.

“Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya.

“No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy! I had not eaten for two days!” said Sura.

Then Sura and Baya fought again. After several hours, they were very tired. Sura had a
plan to stop their bad behavior.

“I’m tired of fighting, Baya,” said Sura.

“Me too. What should we do to stop fighting? Do you have any idea?” asked Baya.

“Yes, I do. Let’s share our territory. I live in the water, so I look for food in the sea.
And you live on the land, right? So, you look for the food also on the land. The border
is the beach, so we will never meet again. Do you agree?” asked Sura.

“Hmm... let me think about it. OK, I agree. From today, I will never go to the sea again.
My place is on the land,” said Baya.

Then they both lived in the different places.

But one day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very
hungry because there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew
that Sura broke the promise.

“Hey, what are you doing here? This is my place. Your place is in the sea!” Baya
shouted.

“But, there is water in the river, right? So, this is also my place!” said Sura.

Then Sura and Baya fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bite Baya's tail. Baya
did the same thing to Sura. He bite very hard until Sura finally gave up. He went back
to the sea.
Baya was very happy. He had his place again. The place where they were fighting was
a mess. Blood was everywhere. People then always talked about the fight between Sura
and Baya. They then named the place of the fight as Surabaya, it’s from Sura the shark
and Baya the crocodile.

People also put their fight as the symbol of Surabaya city.

THE LEGEND of BANYUWANGI

A long time ago, the island of java was ruled by a king. The King had a Loyal Prime
Minister whose name was Sidapaksa. This is a story about the prime minister.
Sidapaksa's wife was beautiful. he loved her very much. But his mother did not like her.

One day,Sidapaksa's mother asked the King to send her son to a faraway place. She
though while his son was away, she had a chance to get rid of his wife. Of course, she
did not tell the King about it.

The King agreed with her. So he gave Sidapaksa a task. "Go to Mount Ijen. There grows
a flower that can keep a woman beautiful. Get the flower for the Queen," says the King.

Sidapaksa went home sadly. He told his wife about the task.
"I cannot leave you alone. Soon you will give birth to our child," Sidapaksa answered.

"Don't worry about me. I can take care of myself."

The next day, sidapaksa left for Mount Ijen. It was a long and hard journey.

A few days after Sidapaksa left, his wife gave birth to a handsome baby boy. She was
very proud of the baby.

One day, Sidapaksa's wife went to the spring. The wicked woman took the baby away.
She threw the baby to a river.

Sidapaksa's wife was shocked when she could not find her baby. "Where is my baby?"
she cried.

She searched for her son. But she could not find him. Finally she fell sick because she
did not eat or drink. She grew thin and weak day after day.

After two years, Sidapaksa came home. He could not wait to see his wife and
child.

His mother saw him at the gate. She said to him,"My son, your wife is wicked woman.
She killed her own baby. She killed your son. She threw you son to the river."

Sidapaksa was very angry to hear it. He dit not believe in anything his wife said. He
was very angry that he would kill his wife.

Sadly his wife said, "I'm very sad because you dont believe me. You don't have to kill
me. Because I will die soon."

Then she ran to a river nearby. Before the current of the river took her away, she said,
" my dear husband, if the fragrant smell comes out of this river, then I'm innocent."
A miracle happened. From the river, there came out some fragrant smell. At the center
of the river came out two beautiful flowers. A big flower and a small one. The small
flower said, "Father, I'm your son. My mother is innocent. It was grandmother who
threw me tothe river."

Sidapaksa cried loudly. He regreted what he had done to his wife. But it was too late.
His wife and child turned into two flowers.

The smelly and dirty river turned into clear and sweet smelled one. In javanese, It's
called banyuwangi. It means fragrant river. The land around the fragrant river is now
known as Banyuwangi, a town in East Java.

STORY FOR FINAL ROUND

THE STORY OF LUTUNG KASARUNG

Prabu Tapa Agung was an old king. He had two daughters, Purbararang and Purbasari.
Prabu Tapa Agung planned to retire as a king. Prabu Tapa Agung appoint Purbasari,
her youngest daughter to replace him as the leader of the kingdom.

"I'm too old, it's time I stepped off the throne," said Prabu Tapa.

Purbasari has a sister named Purbararang. Hearing this, Purbararang was angry. He does
not agree his sister was appointed to replace their father.

"You cannot ask her to be the queen, Father. I'm older than she is. It's supposed to be
me, not her!" said Purbararang.

But the king still chose Purbasari to be the next queen. Purbararang then set a bad plan
with her fiance, Indrajaya. Together they went to a witch and asked her to put a spell
on Purbasari. Later, suddenly Purbasari had bad skin. There were black dots all over
her body. Purbararang make it an excuse to expel her sister.

"People who cursed like her does not deserve to be a Queen!" said Purbararang to her
father.

And then Purbararang go to meet her sister.

"You are not as beautiful as I am. You cannot be the queen. Instead, you have to leave
this palace and stay in a jungle," said Purbararang.

Then she sent a Patih (Governor) to alienate Purbasari into the forest. Purbasari was
very sad.

Arriving at the jungle, Patih (The Governor) is still kind enough to make a hut for
Princess Purbasari. He also advised Purbasari, "Be brave Princess. The affliction will
surely end, the Almighty will always be with Princess".

"Thank you, Uncle," said Purbasari.

Now she had to stay in the jungle. Over in the jungle he has many friends of animals
that are always good to her. Everyday, she spent her time playing with some animals.
Among these animals there was a mysterious black hairy monkey that always tried to
cheer her up. It was not just an ordinary monkey, he had magical power. And he also
could talk with humans. The monkey's name was Lutung Kasarung. The monkey is
the most attention to Purbasari. Lutung Kasarung is always make happy Princess
Purbasari to get the beautiful flowers and fruits with their friends.

At the time of full moon night, Lutung Kasarung acting strange. He walked to a quiet
place and meditate. He is obtaining something to the Gods. This proves that the Lutung
Kasarung no ordinary creature. Not long later, near the monkey broke ground and
created a small lake, the water was clear as a bell. The water contains an ingredient that
is very fragrant.

The next day Lutung Kasarung meet Purbasari and asked her to bathe in the lake.

"What's in it for me?" thought Purbasari.

But she was willing to oblige. Shortly after he plunged himself into the river.
Something happened to her skin. Her bad skin is cured and she becomes beautiful
again. Purbasari very surprised and very happy when she looked in the mirror in the
lake.

After that, she asked Lutung Kasarung to accompany her to go back to the palace.
Purbararang was very shocked, she couldn’t believe to see her sister get the beauty skin
again. She knew she had to come up with another bad idea.

"Who is the longest hair she was the one who wins and will be the queen!" said
Purbararang.

Originally Purbasari not want to, but because Purbararang urged continued to serve her.
The king then measured his daughters’ hair. Apparently Purbasari hair is longer.

"Purbasari had longest hair," said the king.

But Purbararang did not give up.

"Well I lose, but now let us compete, who have the handsomest fiance,, This is my
fiance," said Purbararang while approached Indrajaya.

Purbasari was sad. She knew Purbararang's fiance was handsome. And she did not have
a fiance yet. Purbasari became restless and confused. Finally, he glanced at his hand
and pulled Lutung Kasarung. Lutung Kasarung bounced as if to calm Purbasari.

Purbararang laughed out loud, "So the monkey is your fiance?"

At that time also Lutung Kasarung immediately meditated. Suddenly there was a
miracle. Lutung Kasarung turn into a handsome young man looking very handsome,
and he was even more handsome than Indrajaya. All surprised to see the incident as
she cheered.

Purbararang finally admitted defeat and guilt over this. He apologized to his brother
and begged not to be punished. She forgave Purbararang and her fiance and let them
stay in the palace.

At last, Purbasari become a queen, accompanied by a young man in her dreams. The
young man who turns out has always been with him in the forest in the shape of a
monkey

THE STORY OF MALIN KUNDANG

A long time ago, there's old widow with her son, named Malin Kundang. They lived in
a hut in the vilage near the sea. They were very poor.

Malin Kundang thought, "if I stay here, I won't have a better life. I have to leave this
vilage and look for a job."

His mother was sad to hear it. But she knew that Malin Kundang was right. So, she let
him go. After her son had left, Malin Kundang's mother went to the beach every day.
She hoped her son would return soon. At night she would pray for her son's safety.
She would ask the captain of the ship whether he saw her son or not. But she got no
news about Malin Kundang.

After years, when she was very old, a captain of a ship told her, "Malin Kundang? I met
him some month ago. He is now married to a beautiful girl. She is the daughter of a
wealthy man."

Malin Kundang's mother was very happy to hear it.

"Thank you, God!" she prayed. She was sure that Malin Kundang would return home
one day.

One morning, a big beautiful ship docked. A young couple stood at the dock. They
wore beautiful clothes. Malin Kundang's mother cried joyfully. "Malin Kundang! My
son! You are home!" she hugged the young man.

Malin Kundang did not believe her. He thought,"This can't be my mother! She was a
strong woman when I left."

But his wife said angrily,"Why didn't you tell me that your mother is poor and old?"
Then she spit on the old woman.

The old woman cried. She could not believe what she heard.

"Malin, I am your mother."

But Malin Kundang did not listen. He was embarrassed to have an old mother. So he
kicked the old woman yelled at her, "Go away, ugly woman. My mother does not look
like you at all." The woman fell on the ground. She cried. Then she prayed,"My dear
God, if he really is my son, punish him."

Suddenly, there was a thunderstorm. Big waves hit the shore with a loud noise. They
hit everything from big ships to coconut trees along the shore. The thunderstorm was a
fierce one.
The storm stopped in the morning. But the villagers could see what the storm had done.
Not far from the shore, there were rocks that looked like wreckage and the passenger
of a ship. People believed that it was Malin Kundang's ship, and Malin Kundang
changed into a coral reef. God had punished him.

THE BLOWPIPER STORY

A long time ago in a small village on the island of Bangka, lives a young man who is
an expert in using the blowpipe, especially for hunting. That is why people in the village
called him blowpiper. He also has a very good medical skill inherited from his late
father. One day, the village chief Pak Raje, came to the house blow piper, asking him
to expel the wild boar that enter and damage his rice fields. Pak Raje told blow piper,
that his father had owed money. Thus, blowpiper have to work for it voluntarily. blow
piper take the job, though he will not get paid.

On the next day, blowpiper go to Pak Raje this field. He watched the field and do some
patrols to each side of the field. He witnessed the everyday field, but he still has not
found any suspicious movement. Entering his seventh day, blowpiper who saw
suspicious movements from a distance. He walked slowly to the sound source where
he saw a group of wild boars tried to enter the field. blowpiper then hid behind a large
tree with a blowpipe in his hand. When the fold of pigs damaging paddy, blowpiper
blowgun pointing towards one boar closest to him. He blew his blowpipe. an arrow hit
the boar, but the boar was not paralyzed like blowpiper expected. A group of wild
boar and then walked off the field and out of sight this blowpiper.

"Hmm ... my arrow had hit one of them, it must hurt," said blowpiper the curious.

In the morning, blowpiper going to follow in the footsteps of pig's blood he shot last
night. The trail took him to the forest and eventually ended up in front of a large cave.
Cautiously, blowpiper enter the cave. He was surprised to find a beautiful woman
bloody in a soft bed, surrounded by several other beautiful women. One of them was
an old woman, the mother of the woman fainted.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Asked the old woman.

"Sorry to bother you. I'm looking for my lost arrow, it stuck boar," blowpiper explained
to the old woman.

"The things that you are looking for is on my daughter," the old woman said angrily.

"Why was your daughter?" Tanya blowpiper surprising.

"It's because ... pigs that you shoot with your blowgun last night actually a manifestation
of my daughter," said the old woman sadly.

Explanation old woman made a shocked blowpiper.

"So ... you are all boar that I saw last night?" He asked.

"What you say is true youth," the old woman said softly.

"I did not mean .... I'm very sorry to hear that. I would not do it if I knew that pigs were
you," blowpiper apologized.
"Never mind," said the old woman.

"Forget all about it. The most important thing now is to release the arrow from the
body of my daughter," added the old woman sadly.

"I can help you with that," said the blowiper.

He came closer to a beautiful woman and found a blanket. He then took the arrows from
his body and with his medical skills to immediately stop the bleeding.

In a short time, the wound healed, leaving no trace.

"Now, she has recovered. Let me go home now. Maybe we'll meet again someday,"
said blowpiper politely.

"Yes, young man ... But before you leave, I have something to give to you as my
gratitude," said the old woman while giving blowpiper a wooden box.

"Do not open the box until you are at home," added the old woman.

"Thank you for your kindness," said the blowpiper.

He then left the cave and back home. At his home, blowpiper opened the wooden box.
Surprisingly, the young man was found jewelry, gold and diamonds in the box.

"Wow ...! I am rich," said the youth happy.

On the next day, blowpiper sell all valuables and use the money he had to buy the field,
garden, home, and pay all his debts owed to Pak Raje.

News about the fate blowpiper rapidly spread throughout the village. Everyone
knows, including Pak Raje. It was meant to be like blowpiper, so he went to borrow
from blowpiper blowgun to hunt wild boar in his own field. On the way, he met a wild
boar, and shoot with a blowpipe. Then he followed the trail of blood left by the boar
until he entered the cave. It's like what happened with the blowpiper. Pak Raje asked
to heal the bloody woman, but he could do it because he does not have the skill.
Suddenly, dozens of pigs attacked him, causing him to bleed and hurt. With all his
strength, he escaped from the cave. He fainted when arrived in front of his own house.

Pak Raje's daughter tell what happened to his father for the blowpiper. Hearing the bad
news, blowpiper immediately went to thePak Raje's house to help him. With his medical
skills, he is trying to heal the wounds of this Pak Raje. Finally, Pak Raje could make
and recover from serious injuries. After thinking about what he had been through, Pak
Raje realize his own evil intentions. He felt sorry for greedy.

"Thank you, young man. You've helped me once again. As my gratitude, I would like
to appoint you as the head of the village. Will you accept?" Asked Pak Raje.
"Of course, sir Raje. Thank you," replied blowpiper happy.

After a week, blowpiper ask Pak Raje daughter to be his wife. They lived happily as a
couple. blowpiper is a gentleman and good, and daughter Pak Raje is a beautiful
woman. Under the leadership of blowpiper, all the villagers live in peace and harmony.

THE STORY of BLIND BACHELOR

Once upon a time in Riau, lived a mother with her three sons. The oldest was Bujang
Perotan, the middle child was Bujang Pengail, and the youngest child was Bujang Buta.
He was named Bujang Buta, because he was blind.

Those three children had different personalities. Although he was blind, Bujang Buta
was the kindest child.

While his older brothers were busy playing, Bujang Buta always helped his mother.

One day, their mother asked them to go to the jungle to collect some fire woods. Bujang
Perotan and Bujang Pengail agreed to help. The mother and Bujang Buta did not know
that Bujang Perotan and Bujang Pengail planned something bad. They wanted to leave
Bujang Buta alone in the jungle!

“Bujang Buta, stay here under this tree. Bujang Pengail and I will look for the woods
in other areas. Wait for us and we’ll go home together,” said Bujang Perotan.

Then, Bujang Buta waited and waited for hours. But his brothers did not show up!
Bujang Buta was so scared. He tried to walk. He could not find his stick. His brothers
had hid it. Suddenly, he stepped on something.

“What is this? I think this is a fruit. Hmm..it’s mango. Yummy!” Bujang Buta then
enjoyed the fruit.

He was really happy to eat the mango. He was very hungry. He ate the mango very
fast until he made a mistake. He accidentally swallowed the pip fruit! His eyes were
wide open. Amazingly the incident made his eyes able to see. He was no longer blind!

However, his happiness soon ended after he saw there were a monkey and a tiger in
font of him. He was so scared. He wanted to run away.

“Don’t be afraid, my friend. We’re not going to hurt you,” said the tiger.
“We know everything. We know you are a good kid. We want to help you. Take these
ropes and stick. You will need them someday to help you,” said the monkey.

Bujang Buta received those things. After saying thank you, Bujang Buta then continued
walking. He wanted to go home.

On the way home, he met some people. They told him that the king’s daughter was
arrested by the king of elephants. Nobody dared to release her because the king had big
elephants as his soldiers, which are why he was named as king of elephants.

Bujang Buta wanted to release the princess. With the ropes and the stick, he was
fighting bravely against the elephants. He won! He then released the princess and
brought her back to the palace.

The king was so happy, he then asked Bujang Buta to stay in the palace and marry his
daughter. Bujang Buta was so happy; he immediately went home to ask his mother to
stay with him in the palace.

Bujang Buta did not have a hard feeling towards his brothers. He forgave them and also
asked them to stay in the palace. His brothers really regretted their bad behaviours.

THE ORIGIN OF CATU HILL – BUKIT CATU

Once upon a time in Bali island, there is a fertile and prosperous country. Farm and
fields always provide an abundant harvest. In the village lived a farmer named Mr. Jurna
and his wife. They wanted his rice-plants yield more than the previous harvest.

"Hmm, should the rice planting season now that we make vows," Mr Jurna motion to
his wife.

"Vows what, sir?" Miss Jurna said.

"Well, if rice yields will increase, we are making a big rice cone (tumpeng)," says Pak
Jurna hopefully. Miss Jurna agrees.

Apparently Mr. Jurna rice harvest increased. In accordance with the vows that had been
said, then Mr. Jurna and his wife make a great rice cone (tumpeng). Also will present
eating and drinking party. But Mr. Jurna and his wife was not satisfied with the harvest
which they obtained. They want vows again next growing season.

"Now we vowed again. If rice harvest will be increased, we will make three large rice
cones," said Mr. Jurna who supported his wife.

They also wanted to throw a party more lively than the previous party.

It turned out really happen. Increased rice harvest over again. Mr Jurna and his wife
immediately perform the vows. Most of the remaining harvest, Mr Jurna used to buy
livestock. But they're still not satisfied. Mr Jurna and his wife, vowed again to make
five large cone, if the crops and livestock becomes more. The next harvest abundant
and more and more livestock.

"A gift from the gods, what we beg successfully," said Mr Jurna.

On one fine morning, Mr Jurna went to the field. When arriving at the edge of rice
fields, he noticed something strange.

"Heap of soil as big as catu?" she wondered.

"My feelings there is no heap of soil yesterday," murmured Mr. Juran while
remembering.

Catu is the measuring tool of rice from coconut shell. After observing that soil heap,
Mr. Jurna move on immediately surrounding the fields. After that, he went home.
Arriving at home, Mr. Jurna told his wife about what he saw earlier. He immediately
proposes to make the rice of catu as seen in the fields. Mrs. Jurna support her husband's
plans.
"Well, sir. We'll make some rice catu. That way, our harvests will abound, so it can
exceed the harvestsomeone else," suggested Mrs. Jurna.

Abundant harvest. rice granary is full. The neighbors Mr Jurna amazed to see the harvest
that is unequaled.

"Mr Jurna was briliant farmers," said a middle-aged man to his friends.
"Not briliant farmer, but he was lucky farmers," said one of his friends, smiling.

Mr Jurna and his wife makes some rice of catu. Hijinks begin immediately very lively.
Some of the rice of catu was immediately taken to where a catu which form soil pile is
located. However, Mr Jurna very surprised to see the catu is getting bigger.

"Fine, I'll makes rice of catu such as land catu of this growing," Mr Jurna determination,
with a tone of arrogance.

Mr Jurna immediately went home and ordered his wife to makes a larger rice of catu.

A rice of catu, ready to be brought to the field. While humming and accompanied sound
water of field, Mr Jurna carry large rice of catu. But after arriving on the place, Mr.
Jurna shocked.

"Gosh! Catu is getting bigger and high!" Mr Jurna yelled.

"Anyway. I still have rice stock to made equal to this catu," said Mr Jurna arrogant.

That's what happened. Each Mr Jurna make a larger rice of catu, pile soil in the form of
catu getting bigger and higher. Long run catu of the soil becomes a hill. Mr Jurna and
his wife surrender. They are no longer able to make the rice of catu. So what happened?
Mr Jurna falling into poverty and caused by his own arrogance. Finally, the pile of soil
