Today we are going to do a wonderful experiment and it is the lava lamp experiment.
In this experiment, you will see how density and polarity, when they are in a heated state cause a
reaction between both oil and water with the reaction of gases
Density is the mass of a unit of a material substance. Everything mostly composes of an amount of
density whether it is water, gas or solid. For example, Helium’s density is much lower than of the earth’s
air. Meaning a balloon filled with Helium will only but rise until its density is equal or lower than its
surroundings which it will be in a hovered state or it slowly falls down.
It’s the maximum amount of a substance that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specific
temperature. Something like Salt will dissolve if put in water. Or a more common example is making
coffee. Sugar and coffee will dissolve in hot water by matter of seconds and will mix to create what
humans use to energize in the morning.
But that’s enough explanations, you want to see the cool part right? So this will be a demonstration of
how we will be creating a lava lamp in your very home.
We will be needing
- Vinegar
- Vegetable Oil (Coconut Oil is Optional)
- Glass Container (Water Bottles Are Optional)
- Flashlight
- Baking so da
- And Food Colouring to your liking
The lava lamp only works because of the difference between their density and the failure to solubilize.
The oil had the thickest density of all the component so when poured with food colouring on vinegar the
result is a slow ascent to the top. They also don’t solubilize by the same reason. Even on hot
temperatures it will only ascend faster.
