HIGH-VOLTAGE ELECTRIC SHOCK!

- Don’t touch output terminals during operation

Before reconnecting load cables because of such
as a change of load, be sure to shut down generator
set

ENGINE EXHAUST FUMES CAN KILL!

- Don’t use generator set within an enclosed area.

If necessary to start generator set within
an enclosed, provide adequate ventilation.
Remember this rule when you run the set
in a crater-like low spot or in the tunnel.
Observe the direction of wind carrying
exhaust fumes, and take measures, as necessary,
to prevent the fumes from migrating to
nearby dwelling.

8 For Your Own Safety

KEEP AWAY FROM RUNNING PARTS!

- Stay clear of all rotating and moving parts.

The drive belt, pulleys and fan, for instance, of
the engine are extremely dangerous running parts.
Always stay clear of them.
Perform servicing work only when the engine is
not running.

AVOID ELECTRICAL SHOCK, PINCHING

AND BURN

- Secure safety before doing any maintenance

work, including daily servicing.

Attach “DO NOT OPERATE” or similar warning

tag to starter switch. When a diesel generator set
is stopped, please attach the similar warning tag.

9 For Your Own Safety

BASIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

- Shut down generator set upon noting something

wrong !
Upon noting noise, odor or vibration that is
abnormal, shut down the set immediately.
Depending on the degree of abnormality, you may
have to shut down instantly by pressing the
emergency stop button.

After shutting down the set, investigate for the

cause and, if you can’t tell what’s wrong, please
consult your BOKUK dealer. Never keep on
running the set exhibiting abnormal noise, odor or
vibration or it will soon develop major trouble or a
serious accident.

- Avoid fire hazards!

Fuel, lube oil, anti-freeze fluid and the like are all
inflammable. Don’t smoke while filling the radiator
or changing the coolant or oil. Never use an open
flame near the running generator set.
Also, the spilt oil, anti-freeze fluid might cause the
fire.

- Modification is not permitted.

Don’t modify generator set in any manner whether
the modification is major or minor.
This is because a modification could adversely
affect safety.

- Be sure to perform daily and periodic

inspections.
Serous accidents often have their beginning in poor
maintenance. Know the importance of the periodic
car you generator set needs. (Service personnel
must be qualified to perform electrical and
mechanical service.)

10 For Your Own Safety

[PRECAUTION FOR INSTALLATION]
Be aware of possible electric shock
and fire hazard.

- Installation in the rain involves some hazard!

First, you have to anticipate the hazard of electric
shock when generator set is installed in the rain.
Before starting up such a set, check to be sure the
output cables are well protected from rain and the
power connections and load equipment are not
exposed to rain.
Be sure that the generator set is protected in the
rain well.

- Don’t tie generator set into utility line !

Such connection, even to the lighting load system
of a building, is not only illegal but also dangerous
because it increases the chances of electrically
shocking people and of causing fire, let alone the
likelihood of generator set developing trouble in
itself.

11 For Your Own Safety

Be Aware of Fire Hazard!

- Install cables in flaw-less condition.

A damaged load cable can lead to an accident, such
as fire and electrical shock. Before installing load
cables, check to be sure they are in good condition.
Repair or replace a damaged cable, if any, right
away.

- Make safe and reliable load cable connections!

Do the job right and avoid getting blamed in the
future. These four rules are particularly important:
(1) Clean connection parts completely. No dust,
no grits and no greasy matter.
(2) Never leave any load cable screw snug-tight:
tighten each screw good and hard!
(3) Cannot load cable away from other terminals.
(4) Check the cables for load-carrying capacity.
Be careful not to install undersize cables.

- Don’t start generator set when inflammable

things are nearby!
“Inflammable” includes fuel oil, lube oil,
antifreeze, wiping rags, etc. When determining the
place of installation, avoid siting your generator set
close to any permanent storage facility for keeping
an inflammable material, liquid or solid.

- Secure good ventilation for generator set!

Keep your generator set well ventilated. It needs
fresh air for its engine and for cooling purpose.
Without ventilation, it will not give full
performance and may raise its temperature
dangerously to catch fire.

12 For Your Own Safety

Avoid Personal Injury!

- Is your generator set level on solid floor?

At the place of installation, the floor(dirt ground or
paved floor) has to be level and even. If generator
set were on a slope, it might slide or cock by itself
to cause personal injury. If the ground is irregular
or sloped, put proper bolsters under the set to keep
it level and stable.

- Install generator set safely!

When installing a trailer type generator set, select
level ground and blocks all wheels to prevent the
set from moving inadvertently. Do not attempt to
move the set while it is in operation.

Exhaust fumes can kill!

As we say before, the exhaust smoke is extremely poisonous gas. This fact makes it necessary
to take an appropriate measure(such as redirecting the gases leeward from windward) when
your generator set is operated on the street or close to dwellings.

13 For Your Own Safety

[OPERATION]

Avoid electric shock !

- Start up the engine when the breaker is OFF!

Make sure the breaker is OFF before the starting
generator set. After starting, check and be sure the
output terminals and other live parts. Are all clear
of people: then you may close the breaker (turn the
switch to ON side) to run the set under load.

- Have output terminal cover put on!

Leave output terminals exposed (when generator
set is running) can cause injury due to electrical
shock when the generator set is operating.
Keep the cover put on securely.

Avoid Fire Hazard!

- Handle fuel and oil carefully!

(1) Refill the fuel or oil tank, when the engine is
down and there’s no flame of any kind nearby.
(2) Some parts of generator set that has been
running are truly hot. Don’t spill oil on such
parts: If you did inadvertently, be quick to wipe
the spill off.
(3) After refilling, be sure to tighten the filler cap.
Never leave the cap loose.

- Use recommended fuel, lube oil and coolant!

The specification as well as capacity data are
given in this manual. Be consistent in the
selection and use of each. Using a wrong fuel oil,
for instance, will prevent generator set from given
full performance and may lead to fire accident.

14 For Your Own Safety

Don’t get burns!

- Remember, exhaust pipe and a silencer are so

hot!
When generator set is running or has just been shut
down, don’t put your hand to exhaust parts.

- Open the radiator cap carefully.

Engine coolant is hot and under pressure when
generator set is running or has just been shut down.
Check coolant level only after engine has been
stopped and filler cap is cool enough to touch with
you hand. Remove filler cap slowly to relieve
pressure.

- Never touch engine when it’s running or has just

been stopped!
Don’t touch any part of engine when it’s running or
has just been stopped.

15 For Your Own Safety

[INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE]

Don’t get burns and electric shock

- Keep water away from electrical parts!

When washing, caution electrical parts of the
generator set. When you’ve accidentally splashed
water on control panel, be sure to blow water off
with compressed air: air blowing is better than
wiping with a cloth.

- Don’t change oil when engine is hot!

Wait for engine to cool off.
Remember! Oil in oil pan is very hot!

AUTOMATIC MODE OF OPERATION

NOTE:- If a digital input configured to panel lock is active, the LCD will display the
icon. When in panel lock, changing module modes will not be possible. Viewing the instruments and event logs
is NOT affected by panel lock.

This mode is activated by pressing the pushbutton. An LED indicator beside the button confirms this
action.

When a Remote Start signal is applied to the remote start input, the following sequence is initiated:-

The Remote Start Active indicator illuminates (if configured).

To allow for false signals the Start Delay timer is initiated. After this delay, if the pre-heat output option is selected then
the pre-heat timer is initiated, and the corresponding auxiliary output (if configured) will energise.

NOTE:- If the Remote Start signal is removed during the Start Delay timer, the unit will return to a
stand-by state.

After the above delays the Fuel Solenoid is energised, then one second later, the Starter Motor is engaged.

The engine is cranked for a pre-set time period. If the engine fails to fire during this cranking attempt then the starter
motor is disengaged for the pre-set rest period. Should this sequence continue beyond the set number of attempts, the
start sequence will be terminated and

Fail to Start fault will be displayed accompanied by a flashing shutdown symbol.

When the engine fires, the starter motor is disengaged and locked out at a pre-set frequency from the Alternator output.
Alternatively a Magnetic Pickup mounted on the flywheel housing can be used for speed detection (This is selected by
PC using the 5200 series configuration software). Rising oil pressure can also be used to disconnect the starter motor,
however it cannot be used for under-speed or over-speed detection.

After the starter motor has disengaged, the Safety On timer is activated, allowing Oil Pressure, High Engine
Temperature, Under-speed, Charge Fail and any delayed Auxiliary fault inputs to stabilize without triggering the fault.

Once the engine is running, the Warm Up timer, if selected is initiated, allowing the engine to stabilize before
accepting the load.

If an auxiliary output has been selected to give a load transfer signal, this would then activate.

NOTE:-A load transfer will not be initiated until the Oil Pressure has risen. Thus preventing
excessive wear on the engine.

On removal of the Remote Start signal, the Stop delay timer is initiated, once it has timed out, the load Transfer signal
is de-energised, removing the load. The Cooling timer is then initiated, allowing the engine a cooling down period off
load before shutting down. Once the Cooling timer expires the Fuel Solenoid is de-energised, bringing the generator to
a stop.

Should the Remote Start signal be re-activated during the cooling down period, the set will return on load.

MANUAL OPERATION

NOTE:- If a digital input configured to panel lock is active, the LCD will display the
icon. When in panel lock, changing module modes will not be possible. Viewing the instruments and event logs
is NOT affected by panel lock.

To initiate a start sequence in MANUAL, press the pushbutton. When the controller is in the manual mode
(indicated by an LED indicator beside the button), pressing the START (I) button will initiate the start sequence.

NOTE:- There is no Start Delay in this mode of operation.

If the pre-heat output option is selected this timer is then initiated, and the auxiliary output selected is energised.

After the above delay the Fuel Solenoid is energised, then the Starter Motor is engaged.

The engine is cranked for a pre-set time period. If the engine fails to fire during this cranking attempt then the starter
motor is disengaged for the pre-set rest period. Should this sequence continue beyond the set number of attempts, the
start sequence will be terminated and

Fail to Start fault will be displayed accompanied by a flashing shutdown indicator.

When the engine fires, the starter motor is disengaged and locked out at a pre-set frequency from the Alternator output.
Alternatively a Magnetic Pickup mounted on the flywheel housing can be used for speed detection (This is selected by

however it cannot be used for under-speed or over-speed detection.

After the starter motor has disengaged, the Safety On timer is activated, allowing Oil Pressure, High Engine
Temperature, Under-speed, Charge Fail and any delayed Auxiliary fault inputs to stabilize without triggering the fault.

Once the engine is running, the Warm Up timer, if selected is initiated, allowing the engine to stabilize before it can be
loaded.

The generator will run off load, unless a Remote Start signal is applied, and if Load Transfer has been selected as a
control source, the appropriate auxiliary output selected will activate.

If the Remote Start signal is removed, the generator will continue to run On load until the Auto mode is selected. The
Remote Stop Delay Timer will time out, the load is then disconnected. The generator will then run off load allowing
the engine a cooling down period.

Selecting STOP (O) de-energises the FUEL SOLENOID, bringing the generator to a stop.

41 Installation
▣ Installation
Fresh air is constantly needed by the generator set in duty run to sustain fuel combustion in its
diesel engine and for cooling both the generation amount of toxic gases. These facts, together with
the following reminders, should be taken into account when you locate the generator set for
installation.

Place with poor ventilation are dangerous: examples are tunnels, deep depressions, and indoor
areas. Any of these needs to be ventilated by forced or natural air circulation so that good air
supply can be secured and that the exhaust gases can be driven away in order to avoid personal
injury.

- When using the generator set in the vicinity of homes or streets, be sure to pay attention to
the direction of exhaust gas flow and to the noise restrictions, if any, enforced in the area.

- The generator set, if it has to be operated in a dusty or saline-rich place, must be

maintenance more closed and frequently to avoid the clogging up or corrosion of its radiator
and air cleaner among others

- Be sure that the floor, be it dirt ground or paved one, is flat, level and firm for the generator
set to stand on. Never set up the set a sloped floor.

- Installing, operating or storing the generator set in the vicinity of inflammable materials
cannot be tolerated. Keep the set away from any possible cause of fire: remember, its fuel
oil, lube oil and raw anti-freeze are highly inflammable.

- Make sure good ventilation is maintained inside the generator set in operation. Don’t use a
covering of any kind to enclose the running set. Insufficient ventilation will decrease
power output and result in poor performance, not to mention the possibility of developing
fire within the set itself due to abnormal rise of temperature.

- In rainy weather, it is a wise practice to set up a foldable tarpaulin tent over the generator set
in order to keep it from getting wet (thus eliminating another cause of electrical shock)

42 Installation
▣ Indoor Installation

(1) Secure adequate waling spaces around the generator set in position, recalling the need to open
doors, to work at the fuel filler, to perform control manipulation, and to handle the cables.
(2) Secure good room ventilation, and extend the engine exhaust line through a wall opening to
outside.
(3) As necessary, install a duct to guide the outgoing cooling air from the outlet through an
opening to outside.
(4) To secure the generator set to the foundation, utilize the anchor bolt holes provided in the
common bed.
(5) The vibration absorbing devices included in the generator set may not be effective to damp
certain types of vibration. It may be necessary for the user to add some anti-vibration means
of his own choice.

▣ Moving with Forklift Truck

Do not raise the generator set more than is necessary. The set may tip over, causing fuel or oil
leaks.
- When sliding the forks into the set, be careful not to damage the bottom plate of the set.

The left or right end of the generator set can be

raised with a forklift truck. The set can easily be
picked up with a forklift truck for moving if it is
rested on the bolsters. Also, the bolsters can be
removed easily by raising the end with a forklift
truck.

43 Installation
▣ Connecting Load Cables

- Select rated output that meets the requirement of your expected load, keeping in mind that
long-hour operation under light load is hard on the engine.

- Have the cable end terminated with a pressure-clamp fitting and fasten this fitting to the
output terminal, be sure to insert the bare conductor wire into the hole of the terminal and to
secure it tight: use of pressure clamp fittings together with this bare conductor method is
not permitted.

- All terminal connections must be absolutely tight. A loose connection introduces so-called
contact resistance, which is often so large as to generate localized high heat, resulting in
damage to equipment.

Never connect the load cable to the utility line or private lighting system. Consequences of
such connection are electric shock and fire accidents.

▣ Connecting a Three-Phase to Generator Set

Pay attention to the phase sequence, which is R(Marked RED color), S(Marked YELLOW color)
and T(Marked BLUE color), marked clearly on the output terminal block. Where a three-phase
motor is drawing power through these terminals and if the motor is found to run in reverse direction,
you can correct it by merely “swapping” any two connections, R to S and S to R for instance; this
will make the motor run in normal or forward direction.

▣ Connecting Three Single-Phase 277/480 V Loads

For a load arrangement like the one shown on the right with No. 1, No.2 and No.3 loads, be sure to
equalize their load capacities as closely as possible.

- At the load side, you have to take as much precautions in making cable connections as you took
at the output terminal block. Arcing, sparking, terminal melting and what not are but result of
loose cable connection.

(1) The cable connections must be kept clean at all times.

(2) Be sure that the securing screws used in the connections are always tight.
(3) Keep the load cables away from other output terminals.
(4) Take good care of the output terminal block and the SETTING FOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE chart
plate, keeping them neat and clean.

Operation
[PREPARATION FOR USE (PRE-START INSPECTION)]

▣ Check generator set

Before starting, check under and around the
generator set for oil, fuel or coolant leaks.
If any leak is found, check for the cause.

▣ Check Fuel Level

- Use only fuel of recommended quality from an

honest supplier. Do not overfill the tank to
prevent fire.
- If any one of the generators in parallel
operation runs out of fuel, load on the other
generator will be increased.

Observe the meter of the fuel tank(on the bed) to be

sure the tank is full, Refill the tank if necessary

If the fuel runs out of fuel during operation, the fuel

system should be primed.

▣ Check Engine Oil Level (Engine stopped)

Maintain oil level between MAX and MIN marks
on the dipstick. Add oil if necessary.

The dipstick should be withdrawn wiped clean,

reinserted, and again withdrawn so that the oil
level on the dipstick can be seen.

46 Operation
▣ Check Coolant Level

At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot

and under pressure. Check coolant level ONLY
when engine is stopped and the radiator fill cap is
cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

When opening the radiator fill cap and not seeing the
coolant water, filling the coolant water before
overflowing.

When refilling the reserve tank, always use coolant

premixed with LLC of the same concentration as
before.

▣ Check Air Cleaner Indicator

Clean the element if the indicator show RED.
Reset the indicator after installing clean element.

47 Operation
[STARTING]

- Make sure the circuit breaker is OFF electrical shock can cause severe personal injury or
death.
- Make sure there is no one next to generator set. Warn any personnel nearby that you are
starting up.
- Do not operate the generator set with protective covers, access covers or terminal box covers
removed.

When the engine does not starts, confirm battery voltage

( We does not include The Automatic Battery Charger basically - OPTION)

Do not run the starter for more than 10 seconds at a time. Then allow 30 seconds for cooling before
using it again.

[WARM-UP RUN]

- Load periods of engine warm-up is not recommended. This can result in carbon deposits in the
combustion chambers and incomplete fuel burning.
- If the engine operates abnormally, stop it as soon as possible, try to find a problem and its
source, then make necessary repairs before starting it again.

Warm up the engine for 5 to 10 minutes

▣ During Warm-up
- Check engine oil pressure.
- Check the water temperature.
- Check the battery voltage gauge.
- Observe the pressure gauge. Engine Oil pressure: 80(0.8) or more [Kpa(kg/cm2)]

Just after the engine has been started, the pressure gauge reading will be higher than the
specification because the oil temperature is low. The pressure will gradually restore to the normal
level.

- Check for abnormal sound and vibration

Stop the engine by pushing the emergency stop button if sound and/or vibration is abnormal.

48 Operation
[Power Supply]

- Keep hands away from “live” or output terminals. Severe personal injury or death could
result from electrical shock.
- Keep hands away form moving or revolving parts
- Do not perform any electrical or mechanical service during operation to avoid electrical
shock, burn or injury.

- Do not attempt to move the generator set while it is in operation.

- Keep hands off hot parts – silencer, exhaust pipe, etc. during operation, or immediately after
shutting down engine.
- Do not pour fuel into the tank or oil in the engine during operation.
- Do not use the generator set in overload condition.

Move the breaker lever to the OFF position once, then move it to the ON position.

▣ Supply Power

1. Check to be sure all load-side switches are OFF.

2. Move the breaker lever to the ON position.
3. Close the load-side switches one bye one
to start supplying power to the load side.

Use the load-side switches to turn ON or OFF the load frequently.

to maintain the rated value

Select load so that generator ammeter indication

does exceed the rated value.

If the rated value is exceeded, the breaker ON

switch is turned OFF.

49 Operation
Generally, the generator set is ideal to operate at the rate of 80 % of the rated output.
If a single-phase load is connected, check for imbalance of each phase.

4. If the load is stabilized, adjust the frequency and voltage settings if necessary.

▣ Inspection During Power Supply

Observe the instruments and indicator on the control panel during power-supply operation
Water temperature gauge indicates 80°C to 95°C(168°F to 203°F) at the rated rpm.

Do not supply power to a large load when the coolant temperature is below 50 °C(122 °F)

50 Operation
[Shutting Down]

▣ Stop Supplying Power

1. Open the load-side switches

2. Move the breaker lever to the OFF position.
3. Maintain the no-load condition for about 5
minutes

▣ Stop the Generator Set

- ZAt operating temperature, the engine coolant

is hot and under pressure. Check the coolant
level only after the engine has been stopped
and the filler cap is cool enough to tough with
your hand.
- Keep hands off hot parts – a silencer, exhaust
pipe, etc. During operation or immediately
after shutting down engine.

1. Turn the starter switch key to the O position

and pull the key from the switch.

2. Check the coolant level in the radiator. Add

coolant if necessary.

When refilling the radiator, always use coolant

premixed with LLC of the same concentration as
before. Do not add water only.

3. After a short interval, check the engine oil level.

Add oil if necessary.

4. Check under the generator set for oil, fuel or

coolant leaks.

Maintenance
The following maintenance tip will help you gain most from your generator set.

- Be sure to keep the engine and the breaker turned OFF when you inspect or service the
electrical components.
- You may try to clean the set by washing with water, provided that you keep its doors shut tight
to keep out water splash. Wetting the control panels in particular is very likely to cause
disoperation, malfunctioning or even fire. Blow off water from wetted components, if any,
with compressed air.
- Oil change and cooling water change may be carried out after the day’s work but never
immediately after shutting down the set. The oil and cooling water could be so hot as to scorch
the skin: water for the engine to cool off.

-- Reference --

1. Daily inspection and servicing, regularly effected, will prolong life of the equipment and, what’s
equally important, will assure you of its safe service.
2. We of BOKUK assume that, for this generator set, systematic maintenance and inspection is made
compulsory by statutory regulations as matter of public policy. In some countries as in Korea, it is
believed, power equipment is excluded from insurance coverage unless it is inspected and service
periodically under supervision by qualified technicians. In Korea, the regulations contemplate
“Inspection” as classified into three: Daily, Regularly and Periodically, all to be supervised by
such technicians.

The generator set we build is adapted to these types of periodical and systematic inspections
performed infield. In places where safety rules and regulations have not yet been set up, the
practices in force in Korea should be emulated so that the user(customer) will get most, besides,
maximized safety, from his power equipment in service.

Experienced technicians and experienced worker may be hard to come by. If so, we believe the
logical choice for the user to take is to entrust the whole task to the nearest BOKUK-authorized
service shop: this will best protect the user’s investment.

53 Maintenance
For items other than those listed under Every 10 service Hours or Daily, rely on the expert knowledge
of the serviceman, and the service facilities at your BOKUK dealer.

1. Perform service on items at multiples of the original requirement. For example, at Every 1000
service Hours, also service those items under Every 250 Service hours, Every 50 Service Hours or
Monthly and Every 10 Service Hours or Daily.

2. Use the hour meter on the control panel to

determine servicing intervals. Under severe
operating conditions, more frequent servicing
than is specified in the “Lubrication and
Maintenance Chart” may be necessary. Log the
hour meter reading every day.

Servicing intervals of the generator set depends on operating conditions, fuel, engine oil and
coolant.

Fuel Specification
Use only fuel of recommended quality from an honest supplier. Overfilling can cause a fire.

▣ Recommended Type of Fuel

The quality of fuel oil is very important factor in obtaining satisfactory engine performance, long
engine life, and acceptable exhaust emission levels.
This engine is designed to burn fuels marketed to meet the Limiting Requirement for Diesel Fuel
Oils shown below.

The pour point of the fuel should be at least 6°C (11°F) below the lowest atmospheric temperature
at which the engine must start and operate.

Some furnace oils marketed would not be suitable for Hyundai Engines. In selecting a fuel,
consult the “Limiting Requirement for Diesel Fuel Oils” chart.

▣ Care of Fuel Supply

- Shut down the engine when fueling. Do not smoke while fueling – or when handling fuel
containers.
- Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

1. Fill the diesel fuel tank at the end of the day.

This will drive out moisture-laden air and prevent
condensation

2. When refilling the diesel fuel tank, use clean tools,

such as a hand pump, funnels, containers, hoses,
etc. Wipe filler cap clean before removing it.
When operating the hand pump, keep in mind that
there could be water and sediment that has settled
to the bottom of storage tank; tap the needed
amount of fuel from clean top portion.

3. Be sure to pour fuel through strainer in the filler

opening. Use of a lint-free cheese cloth is a
good practice for keeping dirt out.

▣ Recommended Type of Engine Oils
Use oils meet the Engine Service Classification
CD (MIL-L-2104C). Proper oil selection assures
cranking ability by maintaining an oil film on
cylinder walls and bearing surfaces in a condition
which provides low friction, and therefore, less
cranking effort to achieve cranking speeds
necessary for reliable starting. Improper oil
selection may result in congealed oil film on
cylinder walls and bearing surfaces, which result
in high friction loads and more

Cranking effort, thus preventing sufficient

cranking speeds for reliable starting and effecting
engine life.

▣ Recommended Oil Viscosities

Two important consideration related to
satisfactory engine operation under ambient
temperature conditions – (1) the ability to crank
the engine fast enough to assure starting, and (2)
adequate lubrication of internal wearing surfaces
during starting and warm-up.
These consideration can be adequately met
through proper grade selection. Recommended
oil viscosities are shown in the chart below.

▣ Recommended Types of LLC’s
For Hyundai diesel engines, All season, non-amine
type LLC’s or equivalent are recommended:

Features of recommended types of LLC’s

- Non of amines (methyl amines, ethylamines,
n-propyl amines, etc., all being derivatives or
ammonia, NH3) are contained.
- Silicate and borate are not contained.
- Close to neutral on the pH scale, and hence,
slightly basic(alkaline)
- Long life. (The coolant with 30 % concentration,
for example, retains its efficiency for long, not less
than 2 years.)

LLC is toxic and can cause personal injury if it

contacts skin or eyes. If LLC gets in your eyes,
flush them immediately with water and go to see a
doctor at once.

64 Coolant and Antifreeze Specification

▣ How to use non-amine type LLC

(1) The engine coolant with any of the

recommended additives should be changed
every two years.

When using any other LLC, refer to the coolant

mixture chart on the container.

For disposal of a used coolant containing

LLC, consult you BOKUK or Hyundai dealer.

(2) Proper concentration of LLC is from 30 % to

60 % year-round. Aim at a temperature level
by 5°C (9°F) than the expected lowest
temperature. LLC of less than 30 %
concentration does not provide sufficient
corrosion protection. Concentrations over
60 % adversely affect freeze protection and heat
transfer rates. When adding coolant, use LLC
of the same concentration.

Ambient Temperature °C(°F)
(14) (-4) (-22) (49)

65 Coolant and Antifreeze Specification

▣ Why LLC?
Today’s full-blown trend is toward smaller and more light-weight engines, greater output, lower fuel
consumption and lower exhaust emission levels. Engine application has also been expanded.
In most applications, the engine coolant is compelled to withstand sever conditions, namely,
continuous high-power operation with higher speed of coolant re-circulation in the cooling circuit.
Many materials involved in the circuit (such as steel, aluminum, copper, solder and rubber) are also
subjected to severe service. These materials differ in ionizing tendency and this difference promotes
cavitation and deterioration through the medium of engine coolant. The job of breaking the link
between cause and effect to preserve the circuit is undertaken by LLC.

▣ How LLC works.

LLC contains several chemicals (ingredients) in such proportions as to produce chemical reactions
that suppress corrosion of engine parts in contact with coolant. “Corrosion” is the result of a
phenomenon called “ ionization”.

The power of LLC to defeat the ionic reaction is generally subject to wear and, in the engine coolant,
becomes increasingly weak in time.

Moreover, if its chemicals are not well proportioned to match the circuit metals which they are
mean to protect, they become rapidly used up due to aging and allow some metals to precipitate into
the coolant or to form new compounds which turn to rusty surface deposits. Some chemicals,
calculated to inhibit this ionic reaction, might accelerate the reaction of those metals that have
already begun reacting.

For worse, the process of ionic reaction or corrosion will go on faster than when the coolant is
straight water having no additives, if there is no good match between the chemical proportions and
the circuit metals.

▣ Typical Reported Case of Circuit Trouble for Which Additive Is Blamed

Case 1:
Amines are generally effective in suppressing the rusting of ferrous metals but are said to be
problematic for copper and cupric metals because of copper involvement in pitting reported on Fe
metals. The mechanism of Fe-surface pitting ma be explained as that of galvanic or local-cell action.
Suppose a cluster of copper molecules precipitates out and deposit itself on a surface of Fe, a base
metal relative to copper; the copper deposit introduces a localized galvanic cell which, by its ionic
action, rapidly eats into Fe surface to result in a pit.

66 Coolant and Antifreeze Specification

Case 2:
A silicate (there are several types of silicate) is highly effective in protecting aluminum against
rusting. This compound of silicon is unstable in a solution whose pH is 9 or under: it is prone to turn
to gel and settle down in the solution. For this reason, the pH is usually specified to be 10 or so.
This means that the silicate has to be used in a high-alkalinity coolant. When the silicate is used up,
the high alkalinity starts chemically attacking aluminum.

(Example)
The mechanical seal of the water pump may rapidly wear down as the secondary effect of silicate
gel in the above context.

Case 3:
As the additive as a whole deteriorates or when its concentration in the coolant is too low, its
anti-corrosion performance falls and consequently the circuit metals begin to corrode than when the
additive was active. Of those metals badly affected in such a condition, brass and solder, the
materials used in the cores of radiator become particularly victimized. The cause of coolant leakage
from and clogging of the coolant circuit in the radiator are usually traceable to such a mal-condition
of the coolant.
