GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Read and understand first the concept notes before answering the items A to B. Write the
correct answers on a 1 whole sheet of paper.

INTRODUCTION

Cause and effect relationship can be used to develop effective paragraphs by describing what happens and
why it happens. You can do so by explaining reasons and consequences of an idea or event

CONCEPT NOTES

GRAMMATICAL SIGNAL: CAUSE AND EFFECT

A. Cause is the driving force in the text. It is the reason that things happen. In essence,
cause is the thing that makes other things happen.

SIGNAL WORDS:
Because As a result of As a consequence of
Because of Since Now that

Example: Sandy copied my notes because she was absent yesterday.

The underlined group of words is the cause. Then the bolded word “ because “ is the
grammatical signal word for cause statement.

B. Effect refers to what results. It is what happened next in the text that results from a
preceding cause.

SIGNAL WORDS :

So Consequently Hence
Therefore This resulted Accordingly

Example: She wanted a new purse, so Lauren saved her allowance for three weeks.

The underlined group of words is the effect. Then the bolded word “ so “ is the grammatical signal
word for effect statement.
A. Directions: Choose the correct cause for each given effect. Copy first the given effect followed by the letter and
the group of words as the answer.

B. Directions : Pick out the cause and effect in every sentences. Copy first the words “cause and effect “ followed by
your answers.

INTRODUCTION

A picture, so they say, will tell a thousand words. But what about a graph or chart? A good graph or chart can
sho show as much as several paragraphs of words.

CONCEPT NOTES

TABLES AND GRAPHS

A. Graph- is a diagram showing the relation between variable quantities, typically of two
variables, each measured along one of a pair of axes at right angles.

Bar graphs to show numbers that are independent of each other.


Examples: data might include things like the number of people who preferred each of Chinese
takeaways, Indian takeaways and fish and chips.
Line graphs show you how numbers have changed over time. They are used when you have data
that are connected, and to show trends, for example, average night time temperature in each month of
the year.
A pictogram is a special type of bar graph. Instead of using an axis with numbers, it uses pictures to
represent a particular number of items.
Pie chart = to show you how a whole is divided into different parts. You might, for example, want to
show how a budget had been spent on different items in a particular year

B. Table- orderly arrangement of quantitative data in columns and rows. Also called matrix.
A. Directions: Answer the questions and choose only the letter and its group of words as the answer.

B. Direction : Answer the questions based on the chart.
