= 16 kg and inclination 1  53 and 2  370 respectively are placed
0

on a smooth horizontal surface touching each other at their bottom

edges. A horizontal cylinder of mass m = 25 kg is placed on the
triangular wedges and then released from rest. When the centre of
mass of the cylinder falls through height h = 0.4 m, then at this instant
which of the following statements is/are correct.

(B) The velocity of the wedge ‘B’ is 1 m/s.
(C) The velocity of the cylinder is 1 m/s.
(D) The velocity of the cylinder is 2 m/s.

2. The wedge shown can slide without friction on a horizontal floor. Mass of the
wedge is M and its angle of inclination is θ = 300. A block of mass M slides down
the wedge without friction when released on its inclined face. If path of the block
relative to the ground makes an angle of φ = 600 with the horizontal, find the ratio
of mass of the block to that of the wedge.

3. A sphere of mass ‘m’ is at rest on a horizontal plane when it collides with a second sphere of mass 2m moving
on plane. Just before the instant of impact the path of the second sphere makes an angle α with the line of
centres of the sphere. The co-efficient of restitution between the spheres is ½. For a certain value of α second
sphere will be deflected maximum. Neglect friction between the spheres. Find the value of cot2 α in such
situation.

4. An insect jumps from ball A onto ball B, which are suspended from inextensible light strings
each of length L = 8 cm. The mass of each ball and insect is same. What should be the
minimum relative velocity (in m/s) of jump of insect w.r.t ball A, if both the balls manage to
complete the full circle?

5. A particle is dropped on a fixed inclined plane of inclination  , such that

the speed of the particle just before its strikes the inclined plane is ‘u’.
Show that the consecutive range of the projectile motion along the incline
plane is in AP (Arithmetic progression). Assume all collisions to be
perfectly elastic.

6. A particle is projected up the inclined plane (of inclination  ) at an angle  from

the inclined plane. It collides with the inclined plane at point A. The coefficient of
1
restitution between the incline plane is e  . If, just after collision, the velocity of
2
the particle is found to be vertically upwards, then find the value of  tan  tan  .

7. A block of mass m lies on a frictionless horizontal

surface. On the top of it lies another block of mass
m and of top of it another block of mass m. A thread
that connectes the first and third bocks is extended
around a weightless pulley. The threads are
horizontal and the pulley is being pulled by a constant force F. Find the acceleration of block B if friction
coefficient between the blocks is 𝜇. Consider all possible cases.

8. Two masses m1 and m2 are connected by a light inextensible thread which passes over a
fixed cylinder. Friction coefficient between the thread and the cylinder is 𝜇. If the system

9. A ball A is moving with KE = 4 J, on a smooth hrizontal plane. Another ball B ( mA  2mB ) collides with A
with striking speed v0 , then after collision the speed of A remains nchanged. If the ball B strikes with A with
striking speed 2v0 (direction same as earlier), then the KE of ball A becomes 16J.
If in the third case, the ball B collides with A with speed v0 (but direction reversed) then find
(a) KE of A after collision in third case
(b) KE of B beofre collision in third case.
(Assume that ball B comes to rest after collision in each case).

10. A block of mass M is lying on a fixed inclined plane of inclination 𝛼 to the

horizontal. The coefficient of friction between the block and the inclined
plane is   cot  . At the same time the block on the inclined plane is
released, a shell of mass m is fired into the block horizontally with speed u.
The shell gets embedded in the block. Find the combined speed of the
(block+shell) immediately after the collision. Take g = 10 m/s2.

11. A block of mass M = 5 kg is moving on a horizontal plane. An object of mass m

= 1 kg is dropped onto the block, hitting it at time t = 0 with a vertical velocity
of 𝑣1 = 10 m/s. The speed of the block at the same instant is 𝑣2 = 2 m/s. The
object sticks to the block. The collision is momentary. Friction coefficient
between the block and the ground is 0.4.
Find the speed of the block just after collision.

12. The system (block A and B) is initially at rest. At time t = 0, a particle of mass 1 kg
moving with speed 10 m/s strikes the block as shown and sticks to it. Then find the
time after which block B starts movig upwards.

13. A block of mass m is kept on a smooth wedge of same mass m,

is connected to an ideal spring of stiffness constant k. The system
is released from rest with the spring initially unstretched. Given
m = 3 kg, k = 1 N/m, 𝜃 = 450.
At the instant, when the block moves most rapidly with respect
to the wedge, choose the correct option(s).

30
(A) compression in the spring will be m (B) velocity of the wedge will be 5 m/s
2
(C) Acceleration of the wedge will be zero. (D) None of the above.

14. A ball of mass m projected horizontally from the top of a tower with speed u flies in air for a time interval 𝜏,
before it hits the horizontal ground. If force of air dray is proportional to the instantaneous speed
(proportionality constant = k), then find the horizontal range of the ball.
