At the end of each module, you need to answer the test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will
be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

For the learner:
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action, and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create, and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

Introduction:
This Self Learning Module will guide you to understand the Information
concept as an overview of computer programming. The lessons were designed to
follow the standard SLM format.
You’ve probably heard that “information is power.” In fact, the power of
information depends on how it serves a specific need at a certain time.
Pre – Assessment:
Read the question below and select the letter of the correct answer. Write the
chosen letter on a separate sheet of paper. Please answer the questions the best of
your ability.
2. The awareness and understanding of a set of information and the ways that
information can be made useful to support a specific task or reach a decision.
a. Knowledge c. Data
b. Process d. Information
3. Collection of facts organized and processed so that they have additional value
beyond the value of the individual facts
a. Knowledge c. Information
b. Data d. None of the above
4. Can help people in their organizations perform tasks more efficiently and
effectively.

INFORMATION CONCEPTS
Information can be thought of as the resolution of uncertainty; it is that
which answers the question of "What an entity is" and thus defines both its essence
and nature of its characteristics.
What is data?
Data consists of raw facts, such as an employee number, total hours worked
in a week, inventory part numbers, or sales orders. When facts are arranged in a
meaningful manner, they become information.
Data Representation refers to the form in which data is stored, processed,
and transmitted
Data Presented by
Alphanumeric data Numbers, letters, and other characters
Image data Graphic images and pictures
Audio data Sound, noise, or tones
Video data Moving images or pictures
What is information?
Information is a collection of facts organized and processed so that they
have additional value beyond the value of the individual facts, or a data that has
been processed into a form that is meaningful to recipient
What is Knowledge?
Knowledge is the awareness and understanding of a set of information and
the ways that information can be made useful to support a specific task or reach a
decision.
Turning data into information is a process, or a set of logically related tasks
performed to achieve a defined outcome. The process of defining relationships
among data to create useful information requires knowledge
Professor Ray R. Larson of the School of Information at the University of
California, Berkeley, provides an Information Hierarchy, which is
Data − The raw material of information.
Information − Data organized and presented by someone.
Knowledge − Information read, heard, or seen, and understood.
Characteristics Definitions
Information should be easily accessible by authorized users so
Accessible they can obtain it in the right format and at the right time to
meet their needs.
