Experiment No. 1:
Familiarization with AC Circuit Laboratory
Tools and Equipment
Checked:
1. To become familiar with the uses and functions of different parts of an oscilloscope and
function generator;
2. To identify and adjust the different controls of an oscilloscope and function generator;
3. To draw/illustrate the different AC circuits lab equipment and identify its parts and
function.
Electronic equipment can be divided into two types: analog and digital. Analog equipment
works with continously variable voltages, while digital equipment works with discrete binary
numbers that may represent voltage samples. For example, a conventional phonograph
turntable is an analog device; a compact disc player is a digital device.
The Oscilloscope
An oscilloscope has a wide range of use especially in the field of electronics. They are
indispensible for anyone designing or repairing electronic equipment. An automotive engineer
uses an oscilloscope to measure engine vibrations. A medical researcher uses an oscilloscope
to measure brain waves. The possibilities are endless.
Function Generator
1. Oscilloscope
2. Function Generator
3. Wattmeter
4. Multimeter
5. VARIAC
6. Automatic Voltage Regulator
IV. PROCEDURE
1. Your instructor will provide you with the instruments and equipment needed in the
experiment.
2. He will then discuss each equipment and its functions.
3. With the supervision of the instructor, try to make the instrument work. With precaution
observed, turn the power on and test the functions of the controls.
4. Repeat procedure 3 for each equipment.
V. ILLUSTRATION OF TOOLS/EQUIPMENT
Use seperate sheet of paper and draw/illustrate the following tools and equipment
discussed. Label each part/button properly.
a. Oscilloscope
b. Function Generator
c. VARIAC
d. Wattmeter
e. Automatic Voltage Regulator
Enumerate the parts/buttons of each equipment stated above and identify the function of
each part.
VII. OBSERVATION/DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
Guide questions:
a. What have you observed in the duration of the experiment?
b. What is the significance of what you have observed?
