Soccsksargen, formerly known as
Central Mindanao, is an
administrative region of the
Philippines, designated as Region
XII. Located in south-central
Mindanao, its name is an acronym
that stands for the region's four
provinces and one highly
urbanized city.

MAGUINDANAON TRIBE
Long before the arrival of Shariff Kabunsuan (1475)
and the discovery of the Philippines by Magellan
(1521), there were people already living near the
mouth of Pulangi or maguindanaon River and in the
plains along its upper the tributaries in what is now
Datu Piang. In those days until now, the Mindanao
river overflows its bank from time to time, flooding the
areas along its bank up to its mouth. These floodings
are termed "midsanao" by the Maguindanaons.
TEDURAY TRIBE
One can easily tell a Teduray household in any community
because of the presence of Traditional basket is the
symbol of Teduray. It is a lasting display of their artistry.
The term for weaving is "monom", which includes all
kinds of woven handicrafts.

Teduray people believe in katya (short prayer, orasyon),


murka (gaba), endagiton (spirits/soul) and supernatural
powers. Teduray believed in the existence of kuwek,
busaw, fagad (kapre), and alagasi (higante). Their farming,
planting and harvest season is also affected by the
formation of the stars.
MANOBO TRIBE
The Obo Manobo is just one ethnic group among
Manobos in North and West forest of Cotabato
Province and Kidapawan City specifically in Mt. Apo
and the boundaries of Davao del Sur, Bukidnon
,Cotabato Province in Mindanao, Philippines

Manobo are gifted and nature loving people endowed


with talents and strength to make life not just a living.
They are remnants of the people living during the age
of "survival of the fittest" when Mindanao was once a
vast track of virgin forest.
T’BOLI TRIBE
T'boli have their own story of creation; they believed
that the world they lived, the trees, the rivers, lakes
and mountains has its own powerful being the
Dwata/Mulu (God). Based on the history, T'boli are
Proto-Malayan reserve and are found in the in the
mountain ranges of South Cotabato and Sultan
Kudarat Province. The Proto- Malay and the Malay
were closely related to each other; their movement
and cultural heritage are the topmost bases for the
distinctions known between them.
B’LAAN TRIBE
Among the many tribes in the Philippines, the B'laans
in Sarangani and South Cotabato are the most distinct
in Region XII as they significantly played major
historical roles in the evolution of several towns and
barangays within the locality that have been named
with B'laan origin.

The B'laans have preserved their sacred lands,


keeping them connected to the mother earth, to their
sacred sites in Lamifew, Malandag, Malungon
Sarangani: Melai Bolul, Moleng, Bantay, and Macao.
ART FORMS IN
REGION XII
South Cotabato
Tinalak
(also spelled tinalak), is a weaving tradition of the T'boli people of
South Cotabato, Philippines. T’nalak is a sacred cloth woven by
the T'boli people in communities around Lake Sebu, Mindanao
island. Traditionally made by women of royal blood, thousands of
patterns that reference folklore and stories are known to the
T’boli women by memory. Fu Dalu, a spiritual guardian, guides
t’nalak weaving, a process that is enriched with taboo and ritual.

T’nalak has a distinctive tri-colour scheme: White for the pattern,


red for relief elements and black (or deep brown) for the
background. Fibres used in weaving are harvested from the
abaca tree and prepared in a process known as kedungon. Two
metal blades are used to quickly remove the pulp and reveal the
filaments, which are worked by hand into fine threads
LANG DULAY
(T'boli textile weaver from South
Cotabato) traditionally weaves the
t'nalak of the T'boli. She produces
creations of high quality, displaying rich
colors and fine workmanship. She
knows a hundred designs, spun in
textiles reflecting the wisdom and
dreams of her pcople. Sho was
conferred the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng
Bayan in 1998.

A versatile and prolific artist whose portraiture
echoes his love for the human figure and its
emotions and deep concerns for Mother Nature

He is a self-taught contemporary artist who was


born and raised in Polomolok, South Cotabato,
Philippines. He developed an interest in art and a
taste for figure and landscapes at a young age.
With the inspirations from the works of the old
masters like Juan Luna, Amorsolo, Caravaggio,
Constable, Dali, Sargent and Da Vinci.

SULTAN KUDARAT
KALBS BALAGON
Kalbs Balagon, the mud craft artist from
Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat
Kalbs started making figurines from
ordinary clay and other clay sculptures
since 2004. He joined trade fairs and
exhibitions whenever there are big
events in and out of the region, and now
he is one of the most requested to do
customized souvenir items made from
clay and other related stuff.

This statue of Sultan Kudarat was created by Jose


M. Mendoza in 1973. Muhammad Dipatuan
Kudarat was the Sultan of Mindanao during the
first half of the 17th century. He united the
Muslims of Lanao, Cotabato, Davao, Sulu,
Zamboanga and North Borneo, and resisted
bitterly the Spanish Invasion of his domain. He
was a fearless fighter and Filipino hero in defense
of Islamic faith and Philippine liberty. Kudarat died
around 1650

old painter sculptor from the
Philippines, most of his
paintings conveys much of his
tribe's culture and history.

The cross symbolizes Christianity and the city's


predominantly Catholic settlers, a crescent moon for Islam
and the Muslims, tuna for the city's multimillion industry,
flower for the area's beauty, epic sun for the convergence
of tribes, fire and dove for passion for peace and clouds
for the city's aspirations.

The sculptor of the monument was Franklin Simmons


(1839-1913), who was born in Maine, where he became
known for his portrait busts. He worked in Rome after
1867, when he received the commission for a statue of
Roger Williamsfor the National Statuary Hall collection.

FESTIVALS
Helobung Festival
Every 9th to 11th of November, the municipality of Lake Sebu,
the summer capital and the eco-cultural center of South
Cotabato celebrates its foundation anniversary reflecting the
unique cultural identity and ethnicity of the province

T'nalak Festival
Every July, the festival is a week-long celebration held in Koronadal City, the capital of
South Cotabato. of The festival gets its name from "t'nalak," a colorful abaca cloth,
created and woven by the women of the T'boli tribe of South Cotabato. The design of
the cloth is unique and "dreamed up" by the person who creates it.
Shariff kabusuan Festival
The City of Cotabato holds every month of
December the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival.
It is a colorful week-long celebration which
commemorates the arrival of Shariff
Kabunsuan, an Arab missionary who is
believed to have brought Islam in this part
of the country.The highlight of the
weeklong celebration is the Fluvial Parade
(Guinakit) that commemorates the arrival
of Shariff Mohammad kabunsuan, an
Islamic Missionary who entered the Rio
Grande de Mindanao in 1520. Through
him, the religious and political identity of
the Islam came into existence.
Kalimudan festival

Held every month of November,


the Kalimudan Festival
commemorates the founding
anniversary of the Province of
Sultan Kudarat. The week-long
festivities gathers the different
tribes in the province for
thanksgiving, and colorful
showcase of the richness of their
cultures.

the festival has been celebrated
annually featuring the province's

Sarangani Bay Festival, also


known to the locals as Sarbay
Fest, is an annual event in
Sarangani Province. The festival is
held on every third week of May.
Arguably the most popular beach
event in the southern region of
Philippines', Sarbay festival is a
must attend for many tourists.

Every last week This festival


celebrates the abundance of fish
locally known as “bangsi” (flying
fish). A year round abundant catch
made dried fish making a thriving
industry in the locality and made
the place famous of its bangsi
