FUNCTION:

• Is a relation between two variables that

inhibits an apparent connection

• A correspondence or rule that pairs each

element of domain with exactly one
element of range

• Correspondence: consists a pair between

two quantities.
FUNCTIONS DEFINED BY GRAPHS:
DOMAIN:
• A graph defines a function if each vertical
• set of all inputs for the function line in the rectangular coordinate system
• independent variables passes through at most one point on the
• usually represented by variable x graph.
• If any vertical line passes through two or
RANGE: more points in the graph, then the graph
does not define a function.
•set of all outputs for the function
• the dependent variable
• usually represented by variable y

FUNCTIONS DEFINED AS ORDERED

PAIRS, A TABLE OR A MAPPING
DIAGRAM:

• A function is a set of ordered pairs in

which no two different ordered pairs have FUNCTIONS DEFINED BY EQUATION:
the same x -coordinate.
• An equation that produces such a set of • a relationship where each input value (x)
ordered pairs defines a function. will create only one output value (y).
• x coordinate ang pinaktitignan (x , y) • Technique: Tignan ang exponent ni y, if
ang exponent ay even numbers (2, 4, 6,
8, ….) it’s NOT A FUNCTION. Kapag odd
numbers naman (1, 3, 5, 7, ….) it’s A
FUNCTION.
EVALUATING A FUNCTION: COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONS:

• To evaluate a function is to find the value • a method of contributing a function from

of the function for a given variables. two given functions.
• Uses the range element of one function
as the domain of another function.

OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS:

• For all the values of x for which both f(x)

and g(x) are defined, we define the
following.
ODD & EVEN FUNCTIONS: RATIONAL FUNCTIONS:

1. EVEN FUNCTIONS: • a function that is a fraction where both

the numerator & denominator are
• The function is an even function if it polynomials.
satisfies the equation. • that is, a ratio of 2 polynomials P & Q
f(-x) = f(x) where the denominator is not 0.
• all exponents must be even numbers with
or without a constant.
• even - same - plus/positive

ASYMPTOTE:
• a line that a curve approaches, as it heads
towards infinity.
2. ODD FUNCTIONS:
VERTICAL ASYMPTOTES
• The function is an odd function if it • are vertical lines which correspond to the
satisfies the equation. zeroes of the denominator of a rational
f(-x) = - f(x) function.
• all exponents must be odd numbers and
there is no constant in the equation
• odd - nagbago lahat at walang constant
no.

HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES
• are horizontal lines that the graph of the
function approaches as x → ±∞.
3. NEITHER FUNCTIONS:

• there is a changed and unchanged terms.

• may odd & even exponents or all odd but
with constant
OBLIQUE ASYMPTOTE
• also known as diagonal or slant
asymptote EXAMPLE:
1. If there is a horizontal aymptote, there is
no oblique asymptote.
2. Oblique asymptote only occur when the
numerator has a degree that is one higher
than the denominator.
3. To get the equation of an oblique
asmptote, divide the numerator by the
denominator using long method or
synthetic division

•Note : The remainder is ignored

THE INTERCEPTS OF A GRAPH ARE POINTS AT

WHICH THE GRAPH CROSSES THE AXES:

DOMAIN:
• consists of all real numbers x except those
for which the denominator is zero
• To find these x values to be excluded from
the domain of a rational function, equate the
denominator to zero and solve for x

RANGE:
• is same as the domain of the inverse
function.
• To find the range define the inverse of the
function. If it doesn't work, the best strategy is
to graph the rational function.
ONE TO ONE FUNCTION: INVERSE OF A FUNCTION:

1. For ordered pairs, tables, & mapping • a one to one function that reverses
diagrams: another function.
• denoted by f-1 (x)
• A function in which NO two elements in
the domain corresponds to the same TWO FUNCTIONS ARE INVERSE
element in the range. FUNCTIONS:

• if (f ₒ g)(x) = x and
• if (g ₒ f)(x) = x

STEPS IN FINDING THE INVERSE OF A

FUNCTION:

1. Substitute y for f(x)

2. Interchange x and y
3. Solve, if posiible for y, in terms of x
2. For graphs: 4. Substitue f-1(x) for y

• Horizontal Line test

• A function is a one to one if and only if
each horizontal line intersects the graph of
the function in at most one point

3. For equation:

• ang titignan ay ang exponent ng x

• Odd exponent = one to one function
• Even exponent = not one to one

Example:

• y = x3 — One to one function

• y = x2 + 3 — Not one to one function
PROPERTY OF EQUALITY: LOGARITHMIC FUNCTION:

• If two powers with the same base are

equal, then their exponents must be equal,
For b > 0 and b ≠ 1, if bx = by , then x = y

PROPERTY OF INEQUALITY:

• If bx < by , then x < y

• kapag negative ang x, doon lang magbabago
ang answer into x < __ (x is less than ….)
