Explain GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

G. Developing
mastery Geothermal energy is heat energy from the earth—Geo (earth) + thermal (heat).
Geothermal resources are reservoirs of hot water that exist or are human made at varying
temperatures and depths below the Earth's surface.

How does magma play a role in geothermal?

 Temperature, pressure, and presence of water are factor that play a role in the
formation of magma. These factors eventually play crucial roles in volcanic
activity.

How does a geothermal power plant work?

 Volcanoes and other natural structure such as hot springs and fumaroles (holes and
vents where hot gases from underneath escape) can be very good reservoirs of
geothermal energy. The steam that comes from underneath will then power steam
turbines to generate electricity.

Different types of Geothermal Power Plants

1. Dry steam power plant

 This power plant type emits sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide,
but there is no combustion or burning process.
 The steam use taken directly from an underground source.
 The steam then passes through a pipe and spins the turbine, which power generator.
 The release of harmful gases in a dry steam power plant is steal very low.
2. Flash steam power plant

 Flash steam plants are the most common type of geothermal power plants in
operation today. Fluids at temperatures greater than 182°C/360°F, pumped from
deep underground, travel under high pressures to a low-pressure tank at the earth's
surface.

3. Binary power plant

 Binary cycle plants use the heat from lower-temperature reservoirs (225 to 360°F)
to boil a working fluid, which is then vaporized in a heat exchanger and used to
power a generator.

skills in daily
living.

Guide Questions:
1. What are the benefits of Geothermal energy?

Renewable—The heat flowing from Earth’s interior is continually replenished by the

decay of naturally occurring radioactive elements and will remain available for billions of
years.

Baseload—Geothermal power plants produce electricity consistently and can run

essentially 24 hours per day/7 days per week, regardless of weather conditions.

Domestic—U.S. geothermal resources can be harnessed for power production without

importing fuel.

Small footprint—Geothermal power plants are compact. They use less land per gigawatt-
hour (404 m2) than comparable-capacity coal (3,642 m2), wind (1,335 m2), and solar
photovoltaic (PV) power stations (3,237 m2) *.

Clean—Modern closed-loop geothermal power plants emit no greenhouse gasses and

have life cycle emissions four times lower than solar PV, and six to 20 times lower than
natural gas. Geothermal power plants consume less water on average over the lifetime
energy output than most conventional electricity-generation technologies**.
