Discussion of the lesson

The social, moral and economic aspects of education are essential if we are to
prepare ourselves to live full and active lives as part of our local, and global
community; and to help us define who we are, our part in the world and our
motivations and our perspective on life. Let us define the following aspects.

A social issue is a problem that influences many citizens within a society. Poverty,
unemployment, unequal opportunity, racism and malnutrition are examples of social
problems. Moral issues are those actions which have the potential to help or harm
others or ourselves. Notice that if we have an issue of moral concern, it might
involve something good or evil. Economic issues facing the world economy, as well
as regions and countries, include prospects for growth, inflation, energy, and the
environment, inequality, labor issues, emerging markets and the impact of new
technologies.

These issues are problem or concern connected to a larger issue that affects

society in general. Often, the problem brought forward in fiction reflect contemporary
concerns in the author's own world.

Learning Task 2. Read the following transcript taken from a listening text and
answer the following questions.

Lack of sex education, peer pressure, and early sexual engagement

are just three of the many causes of teenage pregnancy. In the Philippines,
teenage pregnancy has become a social problem.
Peer pressure and lack of education result in early sexual engagement
that leads to early pregnancy. With very little knowledge about sex and
pregnancy, many adolescent girls find themselves in a dilemma about the
situation oftentimes without the knowledge of their parents. These
teenagers, however, do not know that such pregnancy can be a huge health
risk.
Teenage pregnancy is associated with high risk of health problems to
the mother and the baby. Infections from sexually transmitted disease,
premature birth, abortion, postpartum depression are just four of the many
health problems. Therefore, teenage pregnancy is not just a social issue, but
it is also a health issue.
