Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

As it is indicated in the title, this chapter includes the research methodology

of the dissertation. To be detailed, in this part the researchers outline the

research design, the materials, the instruments, apparatus and equipment, the

procedure, data gathering technique and statistical treatment used to answer the

problems in the research study.

Research Design

The methodology used in the study is a comparative experimental method of

research. Experimental studies are one type of comparative study where a

sample of participants is identified and assigned to different conditions for a

given time duration, then compared for differences and also the comparisons are

to determine whether significant differences exist for some predefined measures

between these groups, while controlling for as many of the conditions as possible

such as the composition, system, setting and duration. In general the

comparative experimental method of research is simply the process of identifying

the solutions to the problems through the planned and systematic collection,

analysis, and interpretation of data, testing the conclusions to determine whether

they fit the formulated hypothesis to solve the problem and then comparing the

product formulated or the research study to the existing ones based on their

similarities and differences when it comes to its materials, availability, cost,

functions, etc.. For the findings, the researchers relied on the interpretation of

data upon testing the scaled model.

The figure below shows the flow used for the study.

Materials

 Acrylic - Clear acrylic sheet plastic is a superb alternative to glass in a

number of applications in the home and commercial environment.
 Timer - Timer is a specialized type of clock used for measuring specific
time intervals.
 Pencil - A pencil is writing or drawing implement with a solid pigment
core encased in a sleeve, barrel, or shaft that prevents breaking the core
or marking a user's hand.
 Paper - is a thin sheet material produced by mechanically or chemically
processing cellulose fibers derived from wood, rags, grasses or other
vegetable.

The Procedure

In commencing the testing of the scaled Miniature model the following step is to
be followed: (5 test to average)

a. Wave testing of the Miniature of Proposed Breakwater (Miniature A) and

Model of different breakwater seen in Sobol, San Fabian (Miniature B) to
know how they behave on actual waves
b. Strength testing of breakwater
c. Incremental loading procedures used in structure stability testing.
d. Photographic & video equipment used throughout the modelling process
to document the model set-up, the model operation, the recording of
damage and the assessment of wave conditions
e. Wave Overtopping and Wave loading Test
f. Comparing the data of Miniature A and Miniature B.

Data Gathering Techniques

For the interpretation of the effectiveness of the research study, the data
gathering technique of the study will depend on the result of the test conducted

in the Miniature. The data gathered on the two tests will be compared on
standard breakwater test.
