Most of the individuals use various social networking sites like Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook,
Twitter etc. and they usually develop their biographical profiles, do research, interact with their
family and friends, share photos, videos, music and much more. It is important to know that
social networking sites and its benefits to society has different opinion as there have been many
researches which proves that it is one of best and effective tool and on other end there have been
researches which says that it has negative impact on individual’s life as well as on society. The
growing advancement of technology as well as that of internet has boosted the use of social
networking sites in our society which has not just become common and essential but it has
become omnipresent, though this has given rise to many mischievous and negative activities but
majority of the society has understood the real potential of these social networks.

Firstly, when we look back and think about the way we use to communicate twenty years ago
and when there was no advancement of technology and internet, during those years it was not
much easy to communicate with family and friends that lived in various countries. But, today it
is just a click away and anyone can communicate effectively as well as quickly from anywhere
around the world. To illustrate, Facebook is one of the most common social networking site
which is used worldwide to communicate with friends and family from all around the world
(Jordan, 2014).Similarly, these social networking sites are beneficial for society as they are very
helpful for various noble causes. There are many individuals who use social networking sites for
collecting funds as well as donations for needy individuals as it is one of the fastest ways which
can be used for helping such individuals. Another benefit of these social networking sites is
anyone can keep themselves updated with latest information as well as happening from all
around the world as per their interests.

Similarly, social networking sites are useful for promoting as well as improving the business
reputation and can also have positive impact on its sales. To illustrate, when any positive
comment is shared about the company, customers might look into it which can help company to
increase its sales as well as goodwill. Every individual has right to share about their thoughts as
well as experiences on these platform of social networking sites which can have positive impact
on their business reputation when consumers shares their good experiences (Mazzoni & Iannone,
2013). Additionally, these social networking sites can also be beneficial to teachers as well as to
students, as it is very easy to connect with experts as well as professionals and get education

from them. Any individual can follow any expert and professional as per their interest and
enhance their knowledge and also location is not a barrier while using social networking sites.

Even though, these social networking sites are good for society in many ways, but there are
various issues and problems that are faced in society due to these social networking sites such as
cyber bullying. As per the report of pewcenter.org, in past there have been children who have
become victim of cyber bullying due to the use of these social networking sites (Guo, Pathak &
Cheng, 2015). Due to easy availability of creating a fake account as well as not an easy
availability of getting traced, it becomes very easy to bully anyone on these social networking
sites. Additionally, rumors, threatening as well intimidation messages can be easily to massive
group of individuals through these platforms of social networking sites can create chaos as well
as discomfort in an entire society. On the contrary, privacy as well as personal data can be traced
as well as hacked over the internet due to which individual might suffer financially as well as
their personal life can be disturbed. Similarly, the theft of identity is another main issue due to
personal account as well as details of an individual can be hacked by hackers. It is one of the
most dangerous as well as harmful disadvantage of these social networking sites (Chang &
Hsiao, 2013). Additionally, these platforms of social networking sites can create disturbance in
individual’s personal life when gets addictive. Specifically, teenagers mostly get addicted on
these platforms as well as their most productive time is wasted that can be utilized for different
productive activities and tasks.

Similarly, social networking sites can be harmful for society as it can ruin anyone individual’s
reputation easily by creating a story that is false on these platforms. On other end, business might
suffer the main problem of ruining their business reputation due to wrong message conveyed by
any individual or rivalry (Nishant, 2018). Additionally, due to excessive use of these social
networking sites, individuals are cutting themselves off from society as well as are spending less
time in interacting or communicating face to face due to which their confidence level can be
affected. On other end, it can also create various health issues such as depression. It was
mentioned by university of Pittsburgh that most of the individuals that are aged between 18 years
and 30 years face the problem of depression and it was also mentioned by them that when an
individual gets addicted to these social networking sites then the increment in narcissistic
personality trait among individuals is noticed. Similarly, any kind of false information which has

direct impact on society is also easily spreaded through these social networking sites and affects
the society in a negative way (Wiederhold, 2017).

It can be concluded from the essay that social networking sites are beneficial for society in many
ways but it also affects the society in some negative ways. Even though, there are various
individuals who think that social networking sites are not good for society which is true to some
extent, but understanding the comfort zone and ease in communication these social networking
platforms have brought to society are incredible. It has not only helped in making
communication easy but have helped in many ways such as helping various online communities’
in promoting business as well as personal ideas can easily be shared and communicated with all
individuals around the world, helps in keeping informed about the latest information and trend,
useful for noble causes , etc. It can be said that social networking sites has many proponents such
as making communication easy, providing valuable educational support to students as well as to
teachers as well as disseminate various information that can be useful rapidly. On contrary, it also
has many opponents such as prevents face to face communication, individuals waste their time
over various frivolous activity as well as spreads false information very speedily which can cause
harm to society. Lastly, it is important to know that as every coin has two sides and hence these
social networking sites can be beneficial to society if they use for proper motive or purpose and
by focusing on its positive side as well as benefits which can be provided to society by use of
these social networking sites.
