TOPIC: 20TH CENTURY COMPOSERS
MELC: Analyzes the musical characteristics of traditional and contemporary Philippine Music.

Jose Maceda was born in Manila on January 17, 1917. He started his music studies at the Academy of Music
in Manila. Later, he went to Paris to study with Alfred Cortot. He eventually pursued advanced studies in the USA
with E. Robert Schmitz and earned a Doctorate Degree in Ethnomusicology from UCLA. Considered as the first
Filipino avant garde composer, he also worked at a recording studio in Paris in 1958 which specialized in musique
concrete. Maceda’s musical style changed when he encountered the music of the indigenous tribes of Mindoro in
1953. He then embarked on his life’s work, dedicated to the understanding and preservation of Filipino traditional
music. His extensive research and fieldwork resulted in an immense collection of recorded music taken from the
remote mountain villages and far-flung inland communities in the Philippines. Although his compositional approach
tended to be Western in style, Maceda combined sounds of the environment with ethnic instruments. His compositions
were usually for large groups of musicians. Among his works are Ugma-Ugma (1963), a work for voice and ethnic
instruments; Agungan (1975), a piece for six gong families;Pagsamba (1968), a musical ritual for a circular
auditorium using several ethnic percussion instruments; Cassettes 100 (1971), a composition for 100 cassette tape
recorders; and Ugnayan (1974), an ethnic piece played at the same time over several radio stations.

Comprehension Questions:

1. Who is known as the “First Filipino Avant Garde composer”?

2. When did Maceda changed his musical style?
3. Give some compositions of Jose Maceda.

TOPIC: MEDIA-BASED ARTS- PHOTOGRAPHY

MELC: Identifies art elements in the various media-based arts in the Philippines

Focusing a camera at a subject and clicking the shutter is photography as process. Discerning a significant
moment or a unique expression, framing it in the camera viewfinder with an eye for composition, and then clicking

the shutter is photography as art. That discernment and that eye for composition are the factors that elevate a
photographer from a mere recorder of images to an artist. In a pictorial shoot, the photographer may position lighting,
modify the lens setting, or use filters to create an effect he or she has conceptualized beforehand. The tools and
techniques may not be those of the traditional artist, but the aesthetic principles are the same. For today’s
photographers, the process goes even further. They may take the exposed film into a dark room or subject the digital
images to their photo editing software—and there manipulate the images with the myriad of photo enhancement
techniques and tools currently available. Whether left untouched from the instant the image was captured or was
digitally or manually altered, the resulting photographs can be startlingly impactful. It becomes clear how the
photographer has captured the elements of form, color, light and shadow, texture, and composition to create a true
work of art.

Comprehension Questions:

1. What are the processes in Photography?

2. What are the different art elements that needs to consider in capturing an image?
3. What is the difference between photography as a process and photography as an art?

Quarter 3/ Week 5-6
S.Y. 2022-2023

TOPIC: MEDIA-BASED ARTS- ALLIED ARTS OF FILM

MELC: Identifies art elements in the various media-based arts in the Philippines

Film directing - It is the director, like the painter and sculptor in traditional art, who envisions the final effect of the film
on its viewers, visually, mentally, and emotionally. While the painter and sculptor work with physical materials, the film director
works with ideas, images, sounds, and other effects to create this unique piece of art. He or she conceptualizes the scenes, directs
the acting, supervises the cinematography and finally the editing and sound dubbing in much the same way as a visual artist
composes an artwork. Clearly, however, the director does not do all these alone. Through the years, the complexity of filmmaking
gave rise to numerous allied arts that did not previously exist.
Acting - First and foremost, there was the art of acting for film. With live theater as the only form of acting at that time,
film actors had to learn to express themselves without the exaggerated facial expressions and gestures used on stage. With the
addition of sound in the 1930s, they then had to learn to deliver their lines naturally and believably.

Cinematography - Behind the scenes, there was cinematography or the art of film camera work. This captured the
director’s vision of each scene through camera placement and movement, lighting, and other special techniques.
Editing - This was joined by film editing, the art of selecting the precise sections of film, then sequencing and joining
them to achieve the director’s desired visual and emotional effect. Sound editing was also developed, as films began to include
more ambitious effects beyond the dialogue and background music.
Production/Set design - Underlying all these was the art of production and set design. This recreated in physical terms—
through location, scenery, sets, lighting, costumes, and props—the mental image that the director had of how each scene should
look, what period it should depict, and what atmosphere it should convey. This included creating worlds that did not exist as well
as worlds that were long gone, designing each production component down to the very last detail. .
Again, all these allied arts were made possible through the advances of modern technology. From cumbersome machines
that could barely be moved, today’s highlysophisticated cameras and accessories can handle even the most demanding camera
work. From the era of silent films, today’s films incorporate a vast range of voice, music, and sound effects to suit an ever-
widening array of film genres. From manual rendering, today’s animated films use the awesome capabilities of computers to
amaze moviegoers of all ages.
Comprehension Questions:

1. Describe the allied arts that have emerged as part of the film industry.
2. Explain why the film director is considered an artist
3. Why is film making considered a true modern art form?

Quarter 3/ Week 7
S.Y. 2022-2023

TOPIC: GLOBAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CONCERNS

MELC: Discusses the significance of Global Health Initiatives

Global Health Initiatives (GHIs) are humanitarian initiatives that raise and disburse additional funds for
infectious diseases – such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria – for immunizations and for strengthening health
systems in developing countries. GHIs classify a type of global initiative, which is defined as an organized effort
integrating the involvement of organizations, individuals, and stakeholders around the world to address a global issue
(i.e.: climate change, human rights, etc.)
The Future of Global Health Initiatives (FGHI) process seeks to achieve the following objectives:
1. Global Health Initiatives are more efficient, effective and equitable in complementing and strengthening
health system capacities and delivering health impacts.
2. Financing streams across Global Health Initiatives – and the broader health architecture at national, regional
and global levels – are better balanced and coordinated, with stronger mutual accountability for meeting
current and future global health needs.

3. Global Health Initiatives incentivise increased and sustained domestic investments in health that are more
efficiently, effectively and equitably allocated, implemented and accounted for to achieve universal health
coverage.
In doing so, it will learn from and build on other ongoing or recent alignment efforts in the health sector, such
as the SDG3 Global Action Plan, the Global Financing Facility Alignment Working Group, and the work of the
International Health Partnership and related initiatives.

Comprehension Questions:
1. Describe what is GHI or Global Health Initiatives?
2. What are the different kinds of infectious diseases that GHI raised funds for?
3. Why do you think GHI is important? What are their objectives?

TOPIC: GLOBAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CONCERNS

MELC: Describes how global health initiatives positively impact people’s health in various countries

The global health initiatives collaborative work in the Region covers several areas: AIDS, tuberculosis and
malaria, immunization programs, maternal and child health, tobacco use, human resources, emerging diseases,
nutrition, health promotion and health system strengthening
Universal access to health is the guiding principle and health equity among nations and for all people is the
major objective of global health. Global health initiatives were established to tackle increasing global health threats,
reduce disparities within communities and between nations and contribute to a world where people live healthier, safer
and longer lives.
Protracted social and political unrest in most grant-recipient countries continues to be a major challenge.
Insecurity in many places hampers access to social services with the health sector being the worst affected, and the
loss of human capital has severely weakened health services and systems in affected countries. Furthermore, global
health initiatives have created parallel systems that undermine the holistic approach for health system development,
and the principles of external aid, such as ownership and harmonization, are not adequately applied.
