INTEGRATION BY PARTS

When u and v are differentiable functions of:

d(uv) = u dv + v du
u dv = d(uv) – v du
∫ u dv =uv−∫ v du ............... (i)
To use (i) in efecting a required integration, the given integral
must be separated into two parts, one part being u and the other
part, together with dx, being dv. (For this reason, integration by
the use of (i) is called integration by parts). Two general rules
can be stated:
(a). The part selected as dv must be readily integrable.
(b). ∫ v du must not be more complex than ∫ u dv .
Example 1:
Find ∫ x ln x dx .
Take u=ln x and dv = x dx

Then du = x dx and v = ∫ dv=∫ x dx = 2 x +c 1

Now by the rule,

REDUCTION FORMULAS.
The labour involved in successive applications of integration by
parts to evaluate an integral may be materially reduced by the
use of reduction formulas. In general, a reduction formula yields
a new integral of the same form as the original but with an
expnonent increased or reduced. A reduction formula succeeds if
ultimately it produces an integral which can be evaluated.
Among the reduction formulas are:
n−1
sin u cos u n−1
A. ∫ sin x d x = - ∫
n n−2
+ sin x d x
n n

n−1
B. ∫ cos n x d x = cos x . sin x n−1

∫ n−2
cos x d x

Proof for A formula:

∫ sin n x d x=∫ sinn−1 x sin x dx

Take u = sinn −1 x and dv = sin x dx

Then du = ( n−1 ) sin n−2 x cos x dx and v = ∫ sin x dx=−cos x .

Now by the rule:

∫ u dv =u . v−∫ v du
∫ sin n x d x=(sin¿¿ n−1 x ) (−cos x )+ ( n−1 )∫ (sin¿ ¿ n−2 x) ( cos 2 x ) dx ¿ ¿
∫ sin n x d x = -sin n −1 x . cos x + ( n−1 )∫ sin n−2 x ( 1−sin2 x ) dx

∫ sin n x d x=¿-sinn −1 x . cos x +( n−1 )∫ sin n−2 x dx−¿

( n−1 )∫ sin n x dx .

∫ sin n x d x=¿-sinn −1 x . cos x +( n−1 )∫ sin n−2 x dx−n∫ sinn xdx +¿

∫ sin n x d x .
n ∫ sin xdx=−sin x . cos x +¿ ( n−1 )∫ sin

∴ ∫ sin n x d x= + n ∫ sin n−2 xdx
