Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to find out the effect of social media like Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, Tiktok and so on, to the students of Cebu Eastern College And how long they spent time
in social media.

The paper used descriptive research method in this study. A survey questionnaire made in google
from was used in gathering the data. This method provides data that were likely more objective,
easier to answer and has more accuracy in the tabular process. The sample are the social media
senior high school users.

The findings show that the selected sample of respondents are all social media users, but the
level of addicting to social media is differs from person to other. Furthermore, it shows that there
a significant positive relationship between social media addiction and different life dimensions
destruction of the selected students in all manners such as the personal relations, work
productivity, health, lifestyle and especially to their academic performances. Accessibility and
time spent on social media affects the degree of addiction and so the destructions as well.

Since this study was conducted from the students at Cebu Eastern College, the replication of this
study could be done within other researchers and people profile. Future studies should collect
time-sense data for testing the relationship between social media addiction and its effect of the
students of Cebu eastern College.

The findings confirm the importance of studying the social media effect on life dimension for the
purpose of improving the quality of life and releasing of bad habit. It is possible that social media
addiction contributes to lower self- esteem, which, in turn, leads to a decrease in mental health
and academic performance. In other word, self-esteem may play a mediating role in the relations
of social media addiction to mental health and academic performance. This research wishing to
limit the use of social media of every students of Cebu Eastern College

Chapter 1
The problem
Social media is a platform any digital technology that allows students/people to share ideas and
feelings it can also be used as a form of communication. It provides us multiple ways to
communicate virtually with our friends, family, teachers and etc. There are a lot of advantages of
social media it is helpful to us in order to make our life easier but, there is also some
disadvantages, social media can be addictive that can lead to stress, loneliness, depression if used
excessively

1.1 Background of the study

Social Media has been of all access that helps us in our endeavors. Technology has seen to be
utilized often in improving the ways of life. It has allowed to effectively generate means in a
bigger scale, and such platforms is subscribed by 4.74 billion social media users around the
world in October 2022, equating to 59.3 percent of the total global population. This integrates the
cause of its utilization by regulating platforms and apps as it serves as a free space to the users.
Hence, its subjective features accommodates racism, hate speech, and discrimination. With the
popularity of social networking websites on the rise, our social interaction is affected in multiple
ways as we adapt to our increasingly technological world (Owsusu_Acheaw & Larson, 2015).
This causality has affected students either good or bad. Other than that, it has served as an
apparatus to most individuals involved in work, and students having it as mode of information
and communication to be up to date to our current context.

Students are suffering social media addiction that causes them low performance in studies
less time management, doesn’t know their priorities due to addiction in social media. In this
study, we are to bring out underlying outcomes derived from present studies as well to correlate
both variables appropriately.

Social Media is a broad spectrum having multiple meanings in each discipline. Aichner et al.
(2021), had garnered its fundamentals from 1996 to 2019. Some examples are “When computer
networks link people as well as machines, they become social networks, which we call
computersupported social networks” (Aichner et al ., 2021 ; wellman, 1996), “Social network
sites provide a public forum that enables the exchange of digital information, such as pictures,
videos, text, blogs, and friendship”(Aichner et al., 2021 ; Sledgianowski & Kulviwat, 2009), and
“Social media is the colonization of the space between traditional broadcast and private dyadic
communication, providing people with a scale of group size and degrees of privacy that we have
termed “scalable sociality” (Aichner et al., 2021 ; Miller et al., 2016).

Addiction itself is simply referred to “giving over” or being “highly devoted” to a person or
activity, or engaging in a behavior habitually, which could have positive or negative implications
(Sussman & Sussman, 2011). This varies to each individual according to preference on which
one is preoccupied in long periods resulting to partially lose control of behavior leading to
serious consequences.
In a study of Sumen and Evgin (2021), it shows that the difculties experienced by high
school students increase their social media addiction, while they decrease prosocial behaviors.
This contradicts to the extent of addiction to be limited as it proposes underlying circumstances
such as other factors overlapping that causes negative consequences. An example would the
students sleep efficiency and quality which also causes another problem especially to the
student’s health. To understand the balance, 97.7% of participants stated that the advantages of
using social media were communication and the exchange of information, while 72.2% stated
that the biggest disadvantage was internet addiction (Sumen & evgin, 2021; Drahosova & Balco,
2017). Regardless, the weight of addiction predominantly associates to the causal effect that
reaches to society.

CHAPTER 2
Methodology

Research design

This study will be using the qualitative research method. According to derazin and Lincoln
(2000). Claim that qualitative research involves an interpretive and naturalistic approach.

Shank (2002), defines qualitative research “a form systematic empirical inquiry into meaning
“by systematic he means” planned, ordered and public.

Due to the of use of objective and logical procedure the qualitative research method is suitable
for this study, qualitative research is interrogative or exploratory research and tries to get under
the surface. The aim of the research is to gather insights into how people live.

Instrument

The study adopted a test question to determine the students social media addiction level called
scale this scale comprised 8 items ,three for each of the six core features of addiction
salience, mood modification tolerance ,withdrawal conflict and relapse each items is scored on
5 points

Since we use qualitative method the research instruments we used are Surveys, observation,
interview, and document analysis. In this study, we prioritize collecting of the data personally as
we need live subject to test the theory and stated problems

Surveys are research methods used for collecting data from a predefined group of respondents to
gain information and insights into various topics of interest. They can have multiple purposes,
and researchers can conduct them in many ways depending on the methodology chosen and the
study's goal.

Observation an act of recognizing and noting a fact or occurrence often involving measurement
with instruments

An interview is a structured conversation where one participant asks questions, and the other
provides answers. In common parlance, the word "interview" refers to a one-on-one conversation
between an interviewer and an interviewee.

Document analysis is a form of qualitative research in which documents are interpreted by the
researcher/assessor to give voice and meaning around an assessment topic. Analyzing documents
includes coding content into themes, similar to how focus group or interview transcripts are
analyzed.

Data collection the researcher used to adopted tool known as social media addiction was
already administered in the Philippines to student of siliman university the tool was devised to
assess the facebook addiction level among social media patrons . additional sections were
included to collect the demographic profiles of the respondents . the questionnaires were
administered via google forms online making questionnaires was also created for easy access
and sharing to ensure greater participation among respondents. The researcher asked the
classroom adviser assistance by posting the link their respected group chats or page after the
weeks of being a available online the researcher officially closed the survey as one of the
google forms features ,the researcher could export the collection to excel to be treated
staticially.

EFFECTS

Excessive social media use cannot only cause unhappiness and a general dissatisfaction with life
in users, but also increase the risk of developing mental health issues such an anxiety and
depression. Constantly comparing oneself to others can lead to feelings of self-consciousness or
a need for perfectionism and other, which often manifests itself into social anxiety disorder.

Teenagers addicted to social media and gaming are losing their interest in studies and scoreless
marks.

CAUSES

The illusion that other are more popular due to the number of “friends” or “followers” they have.

Seeing pictures of happy people enjoying their lives, which creates sadness and jealousy because
your life doesn’t seem as grand

Lack of “likes” to your post, resulting in feelings of disappointment and decreased self-esteem

Feeling like you can never keep up with what everyone else has

Being directly attacked about a message or picture you posted

This are the type of social media addiction that can effects of students;

Cyber (online) Relationship Addiction.

Compulsive Information Seeking. Computer or gaming Addiction.

CHAPTER 4

Results and Data Analysis

An interpretive trasncript analysis was used to manifest 3 major themes that characterized
the effects of social media addiction on students of Cebu Eastern College. Furthermore, based on
the  sub-themes gathered from interviews of 5 participants it generates a general pattern . These
themes are also derived from the statement of the problems vis-a-vis providing answers to the
question.

1. “Prison”
2. “Other World”
3. “Focus”

Theme 1: Prison

It is derived from the subsequent statements that suggest the luring effect of social media. Hence,

the addiction. The dependency of social media regardless of outcomes manifests on the behavior

of students and how it affect on their daily endeavors. It correlates to the significant statements to

better overview the effects of the students.

-“I've been trying to avoid social media but I usually give up. I don't really know why, but for

some reason I became incredibly dependent on it.” (P4)

-”I frequently check social media, but occasionally I'll go beyond it. I end up doing the latter
even when there is nothing urgent to do.” (P2)

Theme 2: Other World

It refers on the student’s “safe space” wherein students are given the prerogative to achieve

fulfillment and satisfaction or the opposite. Despite the circumstances and contradiction, social

media has placed them in situation they feel belong. Hence, one variable to consider on
their personal development. This answers the questions: “Do you use social media to forget

about personal problems?”. This signifies the line between school and personal agendas in which

that weighs upon the student’s opinion on the situation he or she is dealing with.

-“I use social media to distract my focus away from anything that is putting pressure on me,

whether it be studying or another heavy responsibility. Even still, it occasionally works since

social media users are pleasant to talk to.” (P3)

Theme 3: Negative

It tackles on the balance of relationship of variables outside of context. This premediates the
consequence and fulfillment being dealt by the student’s motivation to pursue for future
development and if social media has hindered them or helped them on their endeavors. But with
narratives being accompanied by social construct, this has hindered personal development due to
discrimination, hate speech, racism etc.

-“the fact that it can make you stressed out and that many people enjoy bullying others.”

Summary of Findings

1.The participants see social media as their safe space and outlet for expressing their thoughts.

2 The participants acknowledges the negative effects of social media.

3.Most participants are dependent on social media.

Conclusion

The participants are acknowledging the fact that the effects of social media bears negative

consequences wherein they go beyond the normal usage daily. This could result to a lot of

anomalies on their daily lives, given they are also students. Some use social media for

informational purposes as some can manage their time well in terms of screen time and balance

their school works. In terms of mental health, the participants tend to rely and depend on social

media as their safe space. Hence, susceptible for possible addiction. These virtual safe space can
make anything possible. Some felt fulfilling and used social media for past time to seek fun and

de stress from their own personal problem while others seen it as a platform where expression is

abused where bullying is normalize which takes up a part on the student’s mental health.

Recommendation

The researcher recommends the participants to keep working hard to attain their goal, with
positive attitude especially. The researcher suggests the institution to uphold their responsibility
to ensure good mental health among the students by establishing safe space and campaigns to
reduce bullying. Institutions should provide enough programs and activities to suffice the
student’s demand for leisure and decompress from their personal endeavors. This is to lessen
their screen time within the school grounds as well. Thrust projects that could help students build
an interest to help them from their addiction (e.g. team building, workshops, retreat). Lastly, the
guidance needs to engage in student relations to check the progress and overview their
performance with monthly visits.
