ComputerBridge Course - Part1

This document provides an overview of computers and their basic components. It discusses that a computer accepts data and instructions as input, processes the data according to the instructions, and provides results as output. The main components are hardware and software. Hardware refers to the physical and tangible parts like the CPU, monitor, keyboard etc. Software includes programs like operating systems and applications that control the computer and allow it to perform tasks. It also describes input and output devices, different types of software including system software and application software, and computer languages.

 Fundamentals Of Computers
 Characteristics Of Computer
 Components of Computer
 Hardware
 Input Devices
 Output Devices
 Software
 System Software
 Application Software
 Types of Computer Languages
 Language Processors
 A computer is an electronic machine.
 It accepts data and instructions, processes the data
according to the given instructions and provides the
results as information.
 Speed:- A computer works with much
higher speed and accuracy compared to humans while
performing mathematical calculations. They can do
billions of simple operations in just a second .

 Accuracy:- Since the Computers are programmed, if the

data and instructions entered are correct then computers
perform calculations with 100% accuracy.

 Diligence:- A computer can perform millions of tasks or

calculations with the same consistency and accuracy.
Computers can work for hours without any break and
without creating error like human beings need break in
between.
 Storage :- Computer can store huge amount of data and
instructions with appropriate format, nowadays a 3 hours
movie can be stored in a small pen drive.

 Versatility:- We can use computer to perform variety of

tasks . They are used almost in each and every field of
work. For ex: schools, colleges, railway station, bank etc
Hardware Software

 Physical/tangible  A software is a set of

components of a programs used to operate
computer is termed as computer and execute the
Hardware. specific tasks.
 It consists of processing  Software tells the computer
hardware and peripheral and its peripheral devices
devices. about what exactly to do and
how exactly to perform a task.
 Eg: Keyboard, Monitor,  Eg: Operating System,
Mouse, CPU, Speaker Microsoft Word etc
etc
An input device is a hardware device that allows you to
interact with the computer and control it by sending data
to a computer.

Some input devices are :

 Keyboard
 Mouse
 Microphone
 Optical Mark Reader
 Business Card Reader etc..
Output device displays result of the computer processing.
An output device return processed data that is information,
back to the user.
Some output devices are :
 Monitor
 Projector
 Speaker
 Braille Reader etc.
 A program is a collection of instructions given to the
computer.
 A software is a set of programs used to operate the computer
and execute the specific tasks.
• System software is a type of computer program that is
designed to run a computer's hardware and application
programs.
• It acts as the interface between the hardware and end user
applications.
• It is used to control the operation of computer system and also
used to run application and the peripheral devices.
• The system software is installed on your computer when you
install your operating system.
Few examples of System Software
• Operating System
• Device Drivers
• Utility Software etc
• An Operating System (OS) is an interface between a computer
user and computer hardware.
• It is a system program designed to run and manage other
programs on a computer.
• It is the first layer of the software that is loaded into memory
when the computer is on.
• The most important function of operating system is booting.
Booting is a process of starting the computer operating
system. It checks the computer and makes it ready to work.

Examples

Linux ,Mac OS,

MS Windows ,Unix etc
• It is a type of software that controls particular hardware which
is attached to the system.
• It enables device communication with the operating system
and other programs.
• Utility software helps users configure, analyse, optimise or
maintain a computer and enhance the computer’s performance.
• It normally consists of small programs which are thought of as
part of the Operating System (OS) as they often come built in
with the OS.
• Application software, are often called productivity programs
because they enable user to complete specific tasks in an
efficient manner.
• Application software is specific to the task it is designed
for, and can be as simple as a calculator application or as
complex as a word processing application

• Two types of Application Software

• General Purpose Software
• Customized Software
General purpose software is an application software designed for
users who want to perform common task on a computer system
that you use at home, school etc.
Examples: Microsoft Word, MS Excel, MS Power point etc

Customized software also known as tailor –made software,

are usually developed for organization or other small scale
business.
Examples: Payroll System, Reservation system, Inventory
management system etc
