NEWTON’S FIRST LAW
QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS

AT REST
NET FORCE = 0
CONDITION FOR EQUILIBRIUM
When the forces acting on an object
add up to zero, the object is said to
be in equilibrium.

What will
happen if the
weight exceeds
the tensile
strength of the
cables?

A spaceship moves in outer space. What happens to its
motion if there are no external forces exerted on it?
a. It keeps moving with constant velocity
b. It slows down until it stops
c. It stops abruptly
d. It stop until it reaches terminal velocity
A ball is resting on a basketball floor. Which of the
following free body diagrams best represents the forces
acting on the ball?
A 150-N bowling ball is suspended by a light rope from
the ceiling. The tension in the rope is _____.
a. Zero
b. 300N
c. 150N
d. 600N
FRICTION
STATIC FRICTION

• resist initiation of motion

• precisely opposes the applied
force
• if the applied force exceed the
maximum static frictional force
the object begins to accelerate
• proportional to the normal
force
KINETIC FRICTION

The friction present between

two or more objects that are in
motion with respect to each
other.
• resist motion of a moving
object
COEFFICIENT OF STATIC AND KINETIC FRICTION
FLUID FRICTION / FLUID RESISTANCE

Fluid friction is the force that resists motion

either within the fluid itself or of another
medium moving through the fluid.

Air resistance is a kind of friction!

A block with a mass of 20kg rests on an
earthbound plane elevated 35° off the horizontal.
If the coefficient of kinetic friction for this surface
is 0.54, what is the acceleration of the block?

A block with a mass of 20kg rests on an
earthbound plane elevated 35° off the horizontal.
If the coefficient of kinetic friction for this surface
is 0.54, what is the acceleration of the block?

 = -
 = 112.4N - 86.7N
 = 25.7N

 = ma
25.7N = (20kg) a
a = 1.3 m/s2
