Mathematics
Quarter 4 - Module 1:
The Six Trigonometric Ratios:
Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Secant,
Cosecant, and Cotangent
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear

learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide
you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson
prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons
in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing
this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s
assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each
module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We
trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher
are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and
reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based
learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks
on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering
the exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before
performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in
answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your
teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written for the learners. After going through
this module, the learner is expected to:

11 Trigonometric Ratios

Congratulations! You are now in the first lesson for the Fourth Quarter.

What’s In

Directions: Identify the following. Choose your answer from the box and write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.
1. One of the basic shapes in geometry: a polygon with three vertices and three
sides, which are line segments.
2. A triangle in which one angle is a right angle (that is, a 90-degree angle).
3. The longest side of a right triangle. It is always opposite the 90° angle in a
right triangle.
4. The side across the reference angle in a right triangle.
5. The side next to the reference angle in a right triangle.

What’s New
Bobby wants to find the height of a
tree. He has to measure the height from the
ground, the “vertical distance”, but the tree is
too tall. One way that he can use is to make
an approximate guess, but the better way is
for him to use Trigonometry. Let us see how
Trigonometry can help Bobby to measure the
tree’s height correctly.
What is It

In a right triangle, we can define actually six trigonometric ratios. Consider the right
triangle ABC below. In this triangle we let 𝜃 represent ∠B. Then the leg denoted by a
is the side adjacent to 𝜃, and the leg denoted by b is the side opposite of 𝜃.

Theta ( 𝜃 ) is used in mathematics as a variable to represent a measured angle.

Angles are symbolized by

capital letters, while the side
hypotenuse opposite each angle will carry
b c the same letter symbol, in
lowercase.

𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡

𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒

Notice that the ratios at the right are reciprocals of the ratios on the left.

SOH – CAH – TOA is a mnemonic used for remembering the equations.

Example:

Find the six trigonometric ratios of 𝜃 from the given figure below.

A tree is broken 3 m above the level ground. The top stripes the ground
4 m from the foot, while the other end of the broken part remains attached to
the stump.
