some the subjects to the point of quitting.
There are different factors that affect students’ choice of course in college. One of
this is family related factors. Study revealed that Filipino immigrants and non-immigrants
rely heavily on their family’s decision-making. Students cope by following their parents’
advice. They also have to cope with an expectation of financially supporting the family
upon completing their education. Studies from other Asian countries also show parents’
impact in decision making of students when it comes to students’ course preference.
Respect for family is one of the most influential factors that affect Filipino students’
career decision.
As a sign of respect, Filipino children want to do well for the sake of the family,
follow parents’ advice about choosing a job or major in college and lastly, make
sacrifices for the family (Finlayson, 2009). For practicality reasons, it was reported that
parents usually encourage careers that will not cost much money, but at the same time,
are stable sources of income. Aside from family related factors, economic factors which
includes the employability and availability of job in the future is also considered by
students. Employability, i.e., the realistic feasibility of being employed in a stable job,
then becomes an important factor in career decision-making.
Students struggles as the feel like they should follow what their family and
relatives’ decision as they are older than them. Students don’t like disappointing their
family, hence doing what their families’ want to achieve a certain accomplishment.
Based on our research, The major struggles of students in choosing an academic strand
is the decisions of respected people around them, influencing their decisions on various
options that could potentially help them for their future careers.
This is a major problem for students as it may lead them to a difficult path toward
their career. Students in situations like this must have a proper knowledge of what they
want and need so that they don’t need to depend on their families’ decisions. They need
a proper career planning to help them assess their own skills and interest to help them
choose a more suitable career path.
