HISTORY ABOUT BADMINTON
The original name of badminton is Poona, which comes from a city of the same name in India . (which is now
called Pune) where it was played simply with two players hitting a feathered shuttlecock back and forth with tiny
rackets. It developed from the children’s game, named battledore and shuttlecock.
A battledore is an old term for racket. The shuttlecock is made from 16 goose feathers and it is said that the feathers
from a goose’s left wing make the best shuttlecocks. Today you can purchase plastic shuttlecocks, but the ones
made from feathers are still considered the best ones.
Poona court size is far bigger and it plays with 5 players on each side of the court while badminton can play with at
most 2 players on each side of the court. The height of the badminton net is 5 feet (1.524 meters) at the edges and 5
feet 1 inch (1.55 meters) at the center.
Poona, battledore and shuttlecock was crucial in the creation of badminton. It took centuries for it to develop and
evolve to make it into an exciting and thrilling game.
The most popular countries in badminton are China, South Korea, Denmark, Great Britain, Sweden, Indonesia,
Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Singapore.

Dr. James Naismith introduced the sport of netball in 1891 in the
USA. This game is similar to basketball and popularized by
Americans. Netball is played indoors during winter and after that,
the sport was introduced as an outdoor sports event. Since 1897,
the game has undergone many changes. The change is to resolve
the rules and equipment used by players who are mostly women.
After that, Dr. Toles introduced this sport in England. In 1900 and
1901, an official book on the laws of netball was drawn up. The
law was drafted by a recreational association in England. This
law was made to distinguish between netball and foil ball.
England introduced this sport to other countries, especially in its
colonies. In addition, netball competitions at the international
level were first held in 1949. At the same time, the laws and
regulations related to the game of netball were made in more
detail. Now, this sport is played in more countries around the
world including Malaysia.
