CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Soap likely originated as a by-product of a long-ago cookout: meat, roasting over a fire;

globs of fat, dripping into ashes. The result was a chemical reaction that created a slippery

substance that turned out to be great at lifting dirt off skin and allowing it to be washed away

(Koeppel, 2020). Soap has become part of our daily lives from washing our hands, bodies,

clothes, and not only limits to dishes. Given the benefits of cleaning and removing dirt and

grease, it plays a vital role in survival. When used properly, soaps can help to save lives by

stopping the spread of harmful bacteria in dirt. Good personal hygiene is one of the best ways to

protect yourself from getting viruses or infectious diseases.

Cooking oil is always present in every kitchen as it is used in cooking meals. It can be

used from frying, deep frying, stir frying and other cooking methods. There are a lot of benefits

that we can get from using oil, such as it gives taste to our cuisine and it also contains nutrients

that are essential for our good health. However, Waste cooking oil (WCO) is considered as one

of the hazardous wastes because improper disposal of WCO can cause significant

environmental problems such as blockages of drains and sewers as well as water or soil

pollution. (Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2021) And with the growing popularity of unlimited

serve foods and establishments in the Philippines such as unlimited Wings, unlimited Korean

BBQ, the amount of waste cooking oil also rises. Without a proper process of this substance, it

will likely cause long-term problems with our sewage systems especially when the Philippines is

located in a tropical country where it rains from June to November.

To help the environment and community, Jabonete was established and created.

Jabonete is a business that recycles leftover cooking oil to make dishwashing soap. The
researchers developed this concept to recycle waste cooking oil and repurpose it into something

that would be beneficial to the environment and community.

Statement of the Problem

This study is being carried out to see whether Jabonete, a soap made from leftover
cooking oil, is beneficial and marketable.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Who would be the most suitable candidate to launch this business?

2. What formulas and equipment should we acquire in order to make the merchandise
marketable and usable?
3. What promotional tactics ought to be used to advertise the goods?
4. How many bars of Jabonete must be sold to meet break-even capital of the business?
5. What are the social and environmental benefits that the business can offer to the
community?

Scope and Limitations

This feasibility study mainly discusses the possibility of opening Jabonéte, a business
that offers dishwashing soap made of used cooking oil here in Bacolod City. The conduct of the
study will be focusing on the management, technical, marketing, financial, socio-economic and
environmental areas in its operation course.

The business will ideally cater to mothers, as well as students living within Bacolod City
as its target market as well as the people who are most likely to do the dishes in a household.
Jabonéte will operate its business using online platforms, such as facebook, to reach its target
market. Its main office will be located at Camella Homes Subdivision, Brgy. Mandalagan,
Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The primary data gathering tool that was used was an online survey questionnaire and
hardcopy survey questionnaire that were given to 100 respondents both on social media and
personally distributed to mothers residing within Bacolod City.

Form of Business Ownership

The proponents of the Jabonete have determined that forming a partnership is the most
appropriate approach for launching their business. This decision is based on the recognition that
a partnership offers a simple and efficient way to establish a new business venture, particularly
when the parties involved are not intimately familiar with the industry or market. In a partnership,
the business partners collaborate to pursue their shared interests, bringing together their
individual resources, expertise, and experience to create a successful enterprise. In this case,
the proponents feel that a partnership is particularly well-suited to their situation because the
individuals involved share a common set of business interests and aspirations. By working
together in a collaborative and mutually supportive manner, they are confident that they can
achieve their goals and build a thriving new company.

SUPPLY ANALYSIS

Identifying supply analysis in a business is crucial as it allows the business to meet the
demand of the customers. By assessing the supply conditions, the company can provide the
desired goods to the customers while mitigating the risk of a supply shortage. In order for the
company to operate smoothly, there must be the presence of the supplier of the raw materials.
The used cooking oils will be sourced from local establishments that use cooking oil to fry their
food like McDonalds, Jollibee, and unlimited wings restaurants in the city as they consume the
most cooking oil in the area. The chemicals and other raw materials will be sourced from CCS
Chemical Supply, which is located at Narra Ave., Capitol Shopping Center, Bacolod City,
Negros Occidental. CCS Chemical Supply is a local chemical supplier for any soap making to
packaging supply that sells chemical materials at a reasonable cost and has it delivered to one’s
location.

TARGET MARKET POSITIONING

To assess the growing needs of every household in the usage of dishwashing soap and limited
number of choices, Jabonete is a proposed business which specializes in using used cooking oil
as its main component of making dishwashing soap we have conducted a survey in order for us
to understand the wants of people using dishwashing soap. One hundred (100) respondents were
asked seventy (70) female and thirty (30) male. To answer the survey provided fifty six (56)
prefer liquid nine (9) for solid and thirty five (35) prefer paste. This helped us identify the target
more clearly. With this we were able to understand the marketing more and assess the needs of
the market.

Market segmentation
There are several types of segmentation in the market, and this includes Behavioral,
Demographic, Geographical and Psychographic segmentation. The Jabonete mainly uses
Demographic segmentation because it is detailed and helps us understand more the market we
are interacting with. Demographic focuses on Age, Gender, education level and profession. With
this we were able to identify our target.

Housewife
Jabonete has noticed that in most households the majority of people that do dishes are household
wives who usually remain home and do the dishes and chores.

Students
Students or children are usually the ones being told to do the dishes. After eating they would help
with the chores of the parents and do the dishes.

4P’s of Marketing

The intention of the 4P's is to boost sales by meeting the needs and desires of the consumers,
whereas we need to recognize the 4P's such as product, price, place, and promotion to develop
various strategies that can help our business flourish.

Product
Jabonete is a brand of dishwashing soap created from used cooking oil that is produced in
Bacolod City. The researchers developed this concept to provide a solution for waste cooking oil,
which can harm the environment if it is not properly disposed of, as well as to form a sort of
business in which all sides, such as the producers and the end users, benefit from the waste. As
of the moment Jabonete has only three variations of scents such as lemon scent, apple scent, and
unscented. In the future we would like to add more variety to our products.

Price
Jabonete offers a price where everyone can afford. Our price depends on the size of the product
and its scents. The price ranges from 45 to 50 pesos for a 200 grams soap.
Available Scent Price
Unscented 45 pesos
Lemon 50 pesos
Apple 50 pesos

Place
Jabonete will be located at Camella Homes Subdivision, Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod City,
Negros Occidental. The area will function as the company's production site, warehouse, and
headquarters.

Promotion
Jabonete's promotion will revolve around advertising the goods using digital marketing, which
will include social media platforms or web advertising. Considering social media can reach a
wide range of our target market, we will use it to our advantage. We would promote on
Facebook by boosting our posts and interacting with the public as much as possible. TikTok is
another social media platform that we can utilize to gain public curiosity and popularity by
posting behind-the-scenes footage. We can also use affiliate marketing there to build a
relationship with a larger audience. Anyhow, Jabonete will not rely just on digital marketing; we
may also employ broadcasting stations to sell the product to older people who do not have social
media accounts.
