Multiplication of Fractions

The document provides a lesson plan for a 50-minute mathematics class on multiplying fractions for 6th grade students. The objectives are for students to learn how to multiply fractions, solve fraction word problems, and follow problem-solving steps. The lesson proper demonstrates multiplying fractions using examples such as 3/4 x 1/2 = 3/8. It also covers multiplying fractions by whole numbers, mixed numbers, and other fractions. Students are given learning tasks to practice the skills and an assignment is given to review for the next class meeting.

Now before we start our lesson I will ask 5 different questions, each question is worth a
price. Let’s begin.

8x9 = 72

9X7 = 63

6X9 = 54
7X8 = 56

8X8 = 64

B. Lesson Proper

1. Discussion:

Okay class, Multiplying fractions are just like multiplying numbers. To multiply fractions,
you have to multiply the numerators and then multiply also the denominators of the
fractions to be multiplied. If the product is in an improper fraction, simplify it or reduced
to its lowest term.

Learning task 1: Multiply the given fractions.

1. 3 x 1 = 3
4 2 8
Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.

2. . 1 x 3 = 3
5 7 35

3. 8 x 7 = 56
4. . 3 x 1 = 3 11 9 99
4 2 8
5. 8 x 4 = 32
17 5 85

Cancellation Method can be applied before multiplying the fractions so that the product
is already in its lowest term. You can apply cancellation if there is a common factor in
the numerator and the denominator.

Example: Multiply
2
÷5
1. 4 x 10 = 8
1
5 ÷5 11 11

Possible numerator and denominator to cancel are: 4 and 5, 10 and 11, 4 and 11 or 5
and 10. The pair of numerator and denominator with common factor is 5 and 10 and the
common factor is 5. Therefore, divide both by 5. So 5 divided by 5 equals 1, and 10
divided by 5 equals 2. Then multiply 4x2, and multiply 1x11.

Learning task 2: Multiply the given factors. Use cancellation method.

2
÷9
7 x 18 = 24
1
9÷9 25 25

1
1 3 ÷3
8 x 9 =÷3 1
÷8

15÷3 243 ÷3÷8 5

5
1

-You can cancel 8 and 24 using their common factor 8. 8 diveded by 8 is 1 and 8
divided by 24 equals 3. -You can cancel 15 and 9 using common factor 3. So 9 divided
by 3 is 3 and 15 divided by 3 equals 5. -You can cancel also 3 by dividing 3. So 3
divided by 3 is 1, 3 divided by 3 equals 1. -Let’s multiply 1x1=1 and 5x1=5.

Aside from multiplying fraction by another fraction, we can also perform the following
types: (1) Multiplication of fraction by whole number and vice versa: (2) Multiplication of
fraction by mixed number and vice versa; (3) Multiplication of whole number by a mixed
number; and, (4) Multiplication of mixed number by another mixed number.

Example 1:

3 x8
5
8 is whole number and this is same as:

3 x8
5 1

So 3x8=24, and 5x1=5

3 x 8 = 3 x 8 = 24
5 51 5

This is improper fraction so we should change it to mixed number. So we are going to

divide the numerator in denominator. How many 5 in 24? Yes 4 and a remainder of 4
and the denominator is 5.

3 x 8 = 3 x 8 = 24 = 4 4
5 5 1 5 5

Example 2:

5 x 3 1 = 5 X 7 = 35=2 11
6 2 6 2 5 12
Example 3:

Example 6:

2. Generalization:

Okay now class I will give you an another example here in our blackboard and you can
raise your hand if you want to answer
