Introduction:
SAN JOSE CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
San Jose City National High School is a prominent educational institution that serves the
academic needs of thousands of senior high school students. However, one of the significant
issues that many students face is the inadequate restroom facilities in the school.
This research topic is crucial because inadequate restroom facilities can significantly
impact the health and academic performance of students. Research has shown that students who
lack access to clean and functional restrooms are more likely to experience various health
problems, such as urinary tract infections, stomach problems, and other infections. Moreover, the
lack of adequate facilities can also cause students to miss classes or lose focus during lectures,
leading to a decline in academic performance. Furthermore, insufficient restroom facilities can
cause discomfort and embarrassment for students, especially for female students who require
privacy and hygienic conditions during menstruation. This can negatively impact their self-
esteem and mental health. Therefore, this research aims to examine the difficulties that senior
high school students at San Jose City National High School face due to inadequate restroom
facilities. The study intends to gather empirical evidence to support the development of solutions
that can help improve the restroom facilities and, ultimately, enhance the learning environment
of the school. The findings of this study can also contribute to the development of policies and
programs that can improve the provision of adequate facilities in other schools facing similar
challenges.
In many countries around the world, inadequate restroom facilities are a significant
problem for students in schools. The United Nations has recognized access to safe and adequate
sanitation as a fundamental human right (United Nations, 2015). Lack of access to clean and safe
restroom facilities can lead to various health problems and can hinder educational progress. It is,
therefore, essential to address this issue globally to ensure that all students have access to safe
and adequate restroom facilities.
In the Philippines, inadequate restroom facilities are a common problem in many schools.
According to a 2018 report by the Department of Education, only 36% of public schools in the
country have adequate sanitation facilities (Department of Education, 2018). The lack of proper
sanitation facilities affects the health and well-being of students and also hinders their academic
progress. The government has implemented various programs and initiatives to improve the
sanitation facilities in schools, such as the School Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SSHE)
program (Department of Education, 2016). However, more needs to be done to address this issue
comprehensively.
San Jose City National High School is one of the many schools in the Philippines facing
the problem of inadequate restroom facilities. Students at the school have reported experiencing
discomfort and embarrassment due to the lack of privacy and hygiene in the restroom facilities.
This problem affects their academic performance

and overall well-being. While the school has implemented some measures to address this
issue, such as the installation of additional restrooms and handwashing stations (SJCNHS, n.d.),
there is still a need for further improvements to ensure that all students have access to safe and
adequate restroom facilities.
Given the significance of this issue, it is necessary to conduct a study on the difficulties
faced by senior high school students due to inadequate restroom facilities at San Jose City
National High School. Such a study would provide empirical evidence to support the
development of solutions that can improve the restroom facilities and, ultimately, the overall

learning environment of San Jose City National High School. Moreover, the findings of this
study can contribute to the development of policies and programs that can improve the provision
of adequate facilities in other schools facing similar challenges in the Philippines and globally.

Theoretical Framework:

institution that caters to the academic requirements of thousands of senior high school pupils.
However, one of the major challenges that many students confront is the school's inefficient
toilet facilities.

performance of students. Research has shown that students who lack access to clean and
functional restrooms are more likely to experience various health problems, such as urinary tract

also cause students to miss classes or lose focus during lectures, leading to a decline in academic
performance.
Furthermore, insufficient restroom facilities can cause discomfort and embarrassment for

The Philippines is facing a widespread issue of inadequate comfort rooms in public

schools, according to a report by the Department of Education. The report reveals that more than
3,000 public schools, representing 7.76% of the total number, have no regular source of safe and
clean water, while 3,620 public schools have “substandard” toilets. According to Louise Maule,
sanitation and hygiene expert at the United Nations Children’s Fund, the although the
Philippines had a “relatively good” national toilet-to-pupil ratio—one toilet is to 39 pupils
—“some areas are being missed.”, some areas, such as the Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao, have a toilet-to-pupil ratio of 1 to more than 100 people. This lack of access to
adequate and functional restroom facilities can have a significant impact on student health and
performance. The government and educational institutions need to prioritize the provision of safe
and hygienic facilities to ensure that students can focus on their studies and maintain good
health.
