Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Social media is a digital network that allows people to

communicate with their loved ones and it is used for

entertainment. However, the use of social media became

rampant thus affecting the behavior and thinking of

individuals. In the article “Social media use during COVID-

19 worldwide - Statistics & Facts” S. Dixon (2022) the usage

of social media increases. As a result of these, a lot of

people use social media to entertain themselves and did a

lot of trends.

Students or rather the youth enraged themselves by the

trend as they were entertained and look forward to also

being part of “gone viral”, however, According to “Teens

and social media use: What's the impact?” an article from

the staff of Mayo Clinic, it stated that social media has a

negative effect to teens such as it can distract them,

disturb their sleeping schedule, and they are prone to

bullying. As a result of these, it can also affect their

behavior as a student.

In a study by Pempek, Yermolayeva, and Calvert (2009),

the quantity of your time spent daily on social network

4

sites varied greatly. However, an analysis of the info

indicated most participants spent approximately thirty

minutes a day socializing, mostly during the evening hours

between 9:00 p.m to 12a.m students spent a mean of forty-

seven minutes a day on Facebook. More than 50% of school

students continue social networking sites several times each

day (Sheldon, 2008).

This research aims to know the connection of the social

media trends to misbehavior of the students.

Statement of the problem

The following study aims to explore possible

relationship between social media trends and misbehavior of

students in ACLC Naga. Specifically, the researchers seek to

answer the following questions:

1. What social media trends are the students exposed or

participated to?

2. What is the recorded misbehavior of students according to

school records?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the social

media trends and the misbehavior of students?

Significance of the study

The findings of this study would be beneficial to the

5

following:

𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. This study is important because they will benefit

from the study as it will open their eyes to the

possibilities of what they can get from using social media

trends, and how this will affect their behavior.

𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫. They will benefit from the study as they will know

how social media trends are affecting the behavior of the

students in their classes. Teachers will have an idea of the

adjustments.

𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥. This study gives the school a perspective on the

extended effect of social media trends on the student, thus

promoting programs that may ease any negative effects.

Scope and limitation of the study

The study focuses on social media trends and their

relationship to the student’s misbehavior of ACLC Naga,

particularly in the Senior High school Department. Out of

seven (7) sections, only five (5) sections with the highest

number and social media active students are involved and

will serve as the respondent of the study namely sections:

A, B, C, D, and E. The respondents will assess the social

media platform that they are exposed to and or participated

in before, during, and after class hours and will determine

the recorded misbehavior based on the school records. The

6

respondents of the study were 5 sections of ACLC Naga Senior

High School Department with a total number of One Hundred

Thirty-Five (135) students. A total enumeration of the

respondents will be made. Only Senior High School students

and active users of social media Platform like Facebook,

Tiktok, Twitter, and Instagram are included in the Study.

Other sections of the Senior high School Department which

are not mentioned are not covered.

Theoretical framework

Theoretical Framework is a basic analysis of other

theories that acts as a guide for creating the

justifications you’ll use in your own work. It consists of

concepts and existing theory that is used for your specific

study, along with their definitions and references to

relevant scholarly literature. Theories of Social Media:

Philosophical Foundations (2018) Goffman's presentation of

self Goffman introduces the "way to present" in his book The

Presentation of Self in Everyday Life: "Regardless of the

particular objective which the individual has in mind," and

"Thus, when an individual appears in the presence of others,

there will usually be some reason for him to mobilize his

activity so that it will convey an impression to others

which it is in his interests to convey." People utilize

7

social networking services (SNS) to market themselves as

better than they actually are, according to an empirical

study on social media. People's online personas tend to be

more creative than their real selves. Young people often

simplify their lives because they think they are

complicated. This development of the virtual self on SNS is

connected to Goffman's study. Our social media presence

appears to be tailored to a specific audience.

Social Network Theory (Barbara Millet 2017), focuses on

transmitting information or behavioral change, social

relationships are key in social network theory. Since the

1960’s network analytic techniques have become increasingly

applied in a variety of empirical contexts significantly

broadening the scope of media effect research. Three major

theoretical frameworks incorporate network concepts in

understanding the flow of mediated information and its

effect.

Media Ecology Theory (McLuhan, 1964), media has a

direct influence on shaping, and culture should be

organized. The study of how media and communication interact

is known as media ecology and value concerning communication

studies (Pameswaran, 2008), Marshall McLuhan (1964)

recognizes The impact of technologies such as clocks,

radios, televisions, movies, and games are all examples of

8

electronic devices. He concentrated on the relationships’

definition. Technologies of communication McLuhan believed

that it was nearly impossible to find electronic media had

no effect on society.

The influence of media has three main assumptions:

media is infused into every act and action in society, media

fives our perceptions and organizes our experiences, and

media tie the world together. We cannot escape the media

presence in our lives as it is ubiquitous in the realities

of day-to-day life. Media directly influences us, as they

are powerful in our view of the world. Media connects the

world into a “global vintage” where media can tie anyone

around the globe.

The relevance of this theory shows how media are

transmitted and how it influences us in our daily life.

Thus, theories contribute to a better understanding of how

to use social media strategically around the globe. This

theory conveys that media can fix perceptions and it is

infused into every action

The input consists of the profile information and

misbehavior records of students. The process involves

gathering data by randomly selecting students and collecting

their profile and misbehavior information. The output of the

study will be the collected data on the profile and

misbehavior records of the selected students, which will be

used for analysis and further examination of the

relationship between social media trends and student

misbehavior.

Hypothesis of the study

The following statements are assumed by the researcher:

Ho: There is no significant relationship between social

media trends and student misbehavior. It is hypothesized

that students who are more exposed to social media trends

are more likely to engage in misbehavior compared to those

who have limited exposure to social media.

Ha: There is a significant relationship between social media

trends and student misbehavior. It is hypothesized that

students who are more exposed to social media trends are

more likely to engage in misbehavior compared to those who

have limited exposure to social media.

Definition of terms

For a better understanding of this study the following

terms are defined in the context of this research.

Accumulation. A mass or quantity of something that has

gradually gathered or been acquired.

Approximately. Used to show that something is almost, but

not completely, accurate or exact; roughly.

Credential. A qualification, achievement, personal quality,

or aspect of a person's background, typically when used to

indicate that they are suitable for something.

Contingency. Future event or circumstance which is possible

11

but cannot be predicted with certainty.

Convey. Transport or carry to a place to communicate a

message or information.

Empirical. Based on, concerned with, or verifiable by

observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.

Rampant. Especially of something unwelcome or unpleasant,

flourishing or spreading unchecked.

Reductionism. The practice of analyzing and describing a

complex phenomenon in terms of phenomena that are held to

represent a simple or more fundamental level, especially

when this is said to provide a sufficient explanation.

Universalism. Loyalty to and concern for others without

regard to national or other allegiances

Ubiquitous. present, appearing, or found everywhere

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

This chapter presents the relevant literature and

studies that the researcher considered to strengthen the

importance of the current study. It also presents the

synthesis of the art in order to completely comprehend the

research for better comprehension.

Social media are interactive technologies that make it

easier to share information, opinions, and other types of

expression with others through online communities and

networks. People can stay in touch with friends and other

family members through social media. Some people will

utilize various social media platforms to interact with

others worldwide with similar interests, network and locate

job possibilities, and post their own ideas, sentiments, and

observations online.

Others may have access to a platform through social media

that transcends barriers of location and time, enabling them

to get in touch with people, reunite with old friends, and

otherwise connect and reconnect with others to strengthen

and grow their in-person networks and interactions. It

raises public awareness because of its accessibility and

13

reach. It is the finest place to learn things, have fun, and

get inspired. It gives us efficient tools for communication,

which shrinks the planet. Technology advancement has only

increased its consequences.

However, kids' usage of social media can also have a

detrimental impact on them by diverting their attention,

preventing them from sleeping, and exposing them to

bullying, rumors, unrealistic expectations of other people's

lives, and peer pressure. The hazards could be tied to how

frequently kids use social media. According to earlier

research, students who spend more time on social media sites

are more likely to perform poorly academically. They don't

read books because they prefer to spend their time online

chatting and establishing acquaintances on social media

platforms.

Related literature

As stated in the article entitled, The use of social

networks as a communication tool between student and

teacher: A literature review that social networks have

fundamentally altered how individuals communicate with one

another and are used in daily life to develop and instantly

share information with the rest of the world. Social

networks were not initially intended for academic use, but

they are now increasingly being used as a means of

14

communication between teachers and students. Because they

provide new opportunities for communication and interaction

as well as the creation of new learning spaces, social

networks have become a crucial part of the teaching and

learning process. Through a detailed bibliographical

examination, this study aims to assess how social networks

are used by instructors and students to communicate.

(Teclehaimanot & Hickman, 2011).

In the first semester of SY 2018–2019, Botis (2021)

looked at how social media was perceived by first-year

students at a private Catholic college. The students of

Living in the IT Era Responded to survey questions that were

presented. Correlation analysis was used to summarize the

data and assess if the factors are predictive of the effects

of social media on the students. Most was discovered to have

a weakly positive correlation. The study's findings revealed

a substantial positive association between the number of

social media accounts and the amount of time students spent

using them and the effects of social media as measured.

Lau (2018) studies the connection between SMU and in

relaxed environments (outside of classroom context),for

example, when using the internet to search, share, and video

gaming and pre-service teachers' TPACK proficiency using

Path Analysis. He found that Media Sharing is a useful

15

predictor of Technological Knowledge (TK) and knowledge of

Teaching with Technology (KTT). In contrast, Internet

Searching and Video Gaming do not correlate with any

components of TPACK. However, the research is conducted in a

broad context and only focuses on SMU in an informal

setting. Meanwhile, some research shows that University

students in teacher education using not only social media to

media sharing, internet searching, and video gaming but also

other activities such as to download media entertainment,

improving motivation, and improved their professionalism as

future science instructors. Therefore, additional study that

examines the science education must be provided in academic

contexts in order to establish a relationship between SMU

and their TPACK.

The Impact of Social Media on Learning Behavior for

Sustainable Education: Evidence of Students from Selected

Universities in Pakistan. According to The Impact of Social

Media on Learning Behavior for Sustainable Education:

Evidence of Students from Selected Universities in

Pakistan (March 2019), social media is transforming human

society and is becoming a more important component, values,

customs, and social norms. Sharing information and

distributing content become significant social aspirations.

The way people interact with one another, including

16

University students engage, communicate, and socialize

online, mostly with other female students during their

educational institutions' learning processes. This new

medium is playing a crucial part in the dissemination of

material among college students and the general public.

Students can now take part in social discourse by making

comments, exchanging photographs and pictures, and other

types of content. Social media has a significant impact on

young people's daily life today, particularly university

students.

Facebook continues to be the most popular social media

platform among this population, According to Salisi et al.

in (2019). Despite the large amount of engagements on social

media platforms, the majority of students do not display any

signs of reported depression. Among allied medical students,

there is no correlation between social media use and felt

depression. Depression and social media use do not predict

academic success.

The article with the title, Social media as a vector

for youth violence: A review of the literature (2014) that

existing research does suggest that frequent exposure to

violent activities and behaviors through social media has a

negative psychosocial effect on children and adolescents

(Marcum, Higgins, & Ricketts, 2010; Ybarra, Espelage, &

17

Mitchell, 2007; Ybarra, West, et al., 2007). However,

empirical data describing this relationship are limited.

Additionally, studies show that young people who engage in

violent behavior on social media are more inclined to

support the idea that bullying other students is acceptable

Williams & Guerra (2007); Patchin & Williams, 2013.

According to the assessing the effect of the COVID-19

pandemic, shift to online learning, and social media use on

the mental health of college students in the Philippines: A

mixed-method study protocol (2022), the effective completion

of a task may have a substantial impact on a college

student's mental state of a pupil's function.

According to a 2013 study, effective teaching

techniques can improve pupils' Academic success and job

satisfaction are both correlated with mental health.

However, these approaches are challenged in numerous ways by

online learning. Moreover, a 2020 study discovered that

students' social support networks had an impact on their

mental health, which, in turn, The physical restrictions

brought on by the COVID-19 epidemic may put them in danger.

Availability of assistance to a student through social

connections to other people, groups, and the larger Students

at universities may receive social support from their

families, friends, classmates, teachers, and a significant

18

other, given the protective nature of the impact of social

support on psychological health, a helpful atmosphere in the

classroom should be maintained. Online education must be

viewed as a welcoming community and a secure setting for

peer interactions. This is supported by a 2019 study on sad

students who described their want to see their reflections

in others. It remains to be observed whether the current

implementation of online learning has successfully

transitioned.

The use of the social media among the youth of today is

growing by the day and gaining more and more popularity

among students. It is a way to make connections, not only on

campus but with friends outside of school. According to

Owusu-Acheaw, & Larson (2015) did a study to assess

students’ use of social media and its effect on academic

performance of tertiary institutions students in Ghana with

a focus on Koforidua Polytechnic students. Questionnaire was

used for collecting data. The study revealed that the

majority of the respondents had mobile phones which also had

Internet facility on them and had knowledge of the existence

of many media sites. The study further confirmed that most

of the respondents visit their social media sites using

their phones and spend between thirty minutes to three hours

per day. In addition the study revealed that the use of

19

social media sites had affected the academic performance of

the respondents negatively and that there was a direct

relationship between the use of social media sites and

academic performance.

The article of Social Media Use and its Effects of the

Values of Tertiary School Students in Cagayan Valley,

Philippines for Education Program Development (2019), says

that social networking sites focus on sharing or engaging in

social interaction. Its reach now includes wings to a number

of new industries, with education being one of them. Social

media is playing a big part in education. They are internet-

based communication tools or channels that are used to

gather, share, discuss, or transmit information with friends

and coworkers. They entail converting one-way communication

into an interactive online discourse by using web-based

technology. User-generated material is produced and traded.

Students and teachers utilize social media to distribute

unique content, articles, or publications at school or in

any office in line with their course. Hence, the media

spread around the neighborhood. Particularly students make

use of it and offer a chance to ask any questions they might

have about their course. Consequently, social media use has

increased across the society.

Related studies
20

According to The effects of social media on students’

behaviors; Facebook as a case study, social-learning concept

analysis by Zhang (et al 2015), is part of the knowledge

management process, which is also about engagement in social

media. Zhang, Zhu, and de Pablos had also studied learning

using virtual environments (2012).

According to the writers, it has a favorable impact on

the students' health. Among others, Tobi (2013) emphasized

further that this has a favorable effect on user confidence.

Krasnova et al. (2008) and Kimball and Rheingold (2003)

further suggested that employing as long as Facebook envy is

under control, social networking services (like Facebook and

MySpace) boost user satisfaction and can lower despair

(Tandoc, Ferrucci, & Duffy, 2015).

One of the most popular forms of communication in the

modern world, according to Kaya and Bicen (2016), is social

media. Multiple research papers have looked at their

application in various fields. This study will primarily

look at Facebook in order to investigate how social media

affects students' behaviors. It will also be evaluated

whether using Facebook has a favorable link with social

media engagement, participation in social media, and social

media-related behaviors. The survey also shows that students

understood the need of guarding their social identity

21

because their Facebook shares are private. They also value

privacy because they never access their friends' Facebook

accounts.

In the modern world, social media is playing a crucial

part in how university student study in order to obtain

sustainable education, According, to Abbas et al. (2019).

Social media's influence on sustainable education is

becoming important and compelling. Through social media and

the way it is transforming education, technology has made

the globe a smaller, more interconnected place. This unique

study is one of the few to focus its investigation on

identifying the association between social media's good and

negative traits and university students' learning attitudes

for long-term education. The effect of social media on

sustainable education is more important and motivating.

Social media and the way it is influencing education have

transformed the world into a small, interconnected village.

One of the few original studies to do a focused inquiry on

uncovering the association between positive and negative

social media characteristics and the learning attitude of

university students for sustainable education This study

intends to look at the positive and negative influences on

students' thoughts and how they influenced their ability to

share both good and negative characteristics with others. It

22

is becoming more obvious that social networking sites and

the apps they provide university students both huge

advantages and threats, and that their effects on students'

psychological adjustments or learning practices are not

fully known. The results showed that there are more

detrimental effects of social media use on student conduct

in Pakistan than favorable ones. Since the findings are

unique to the specific respondents, they may not be applied

to the entire student body. The relationship between the

antagonistic and creative aspects of social media is

presented in this study, opening up possibilities for

further research and promoting a better knowledge of how

web-based social networks are used.

According to the World Health Organization (2020),

"Adolescents" are a group of people between the ages of 10

and 19; "Youth" refers to those between the ages of 15 and

24. While a group with an age range of 10 to 24 years is

referred to as "Young People" (WHO, 2020). However, social

media addiction among different people is the same teenagers

and young people (Simsek et al., 2019). Social media is a

relatively effective tool for young people to manage their

mental health (O'Reilly et al., 2018). The majority of young

people's time is now spent on this new media. People

particularly young people, have been impacted by social

23

media, according to Mohd Ayub, Hamid, and Nawawi (2012).

Many of them are unintentionally drawn into the virtual

activities in the SNSs (Kirik et al., 2015).

As stated in the article, A Quantitative Research on

the Level of Social Media Addiction among Young People in

Turkey. Internet users frequent social networking sites

like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and Periscope

users communicate through exchanging photographs, text,

voicemail, and videos with people of various ages and

classes, data. Social media can be used to mobilize the

masses and raise public awareness. For instance, many who

experienced the 2011 Van Earthquake published their position

on social media, and thousands of sent tweets have started a

variety of outreach activities. A number of other social

media operations, including those on Facebook and Twitter,

were successful in igniting the Arab Spring public

movements. It is evident that social media is becoming

increasingly important in our lives on a daily basis, and

it's even potential to drive international movements Its

impact on people, particularly young people, is not

surprising. People are unavoidable. Students from a high

school associated with the Ministry of A survey is presented

to educators in Turkey's Gaziosmanpaşa district and Istanbul

province to assess the extent of young people's addiction to

24

social media.

Tamayo & Dela Cruz (2014) studied the relationship

between the use of Social Media sites and the Academic

Performance of the students of Bachelor of Science in

Information Technology at Centro Escolar University Malolos.

The study shows that using Social Media impedes student’s

learning and directly affects the students’ attendance at

school. The result of the analysis was plotted in a scatter

diagram to show a clear view of correlation or relationship

between the variables. Social Media and Academic Performance

have an effect on each other. It only means that when a

student gets too involved with the use of Social Media it

affects his performance in class activities and overall

academic performance.

Gordon (2014) claims that excellent pedagogical

practice, which can be enabled, can support and encourage

all three dimensions of flexible learning, which attempts to

give students flexibility in the time, location, and style

of their learning and e-learning itself has improved. You

can use this strategy at home or in the classroom. Depending

on the way of delivery, the employment of technology can

result in a range of techniques depending on the technical

specifications of the devices and the nature of the learning

tasks and restrictions. In order to satisfy the needs of the

25

current state of education, Bao (2020) outlined the

following essential elements in his study: High correlation

between online designing education and learning for

students; Active online information distribution;

Appropriate student aid, the involvement of teachers; the

variety and quality of students' learning experiences; and

Protocol for handling unexpected events in online

educational services.

According to Krasnova, Hildebrand, Guenther, Kovrigin,

and Nowobilska (2008), using social networks might boost

self-esteem since users can present themselves to friends

with similar ideologies and hobbies. Tobi, Ma'on, and

Ghazali (2013) discussed the prevalence of online social

networks and investigated whether Malaysian students' social

and psychological well-being was impacted by their use.

Cruz & Cruz (2013) looked into how social media is used

in the Philippines to help students learn more effectively.

According to their research, more student involvement in the

class "enhanced the learning process of students, having a

favorable influence on student knowledge acquisition" and

"the majority of students agreed that using social

networking sites improved their experience."

SYNTHESIS
26

The present study differs from previous studies in

terms of the number of total respondents and rate. And also,

the study differs in terms of the measurement of behavior

and questionnaires used. This study will determine the

Social media trends and their relationship to the student’s

misbehavior of AClC Naga, particularly in the Senior High

School Department. The relationship between two major

variables was the focus of the present study.

This study aims to investigate the correlation

between social media trends and misbehavior of

students. The research design and methodology used in

this study will be presented in this chapter.

Research Design

The research design for this study will be a

correlational design. This design will allow the

researcher to examine the relationship between two

variables, social media trends and the misbehavior of

students. The use of a correlational design is

appropriate for this study as it will enable the

researcher to determine whether there is a relationship

between the two variables, but it will not establish

causality.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents for this study will be ACLC-Naga

students. Participation will be voluntary, and students

will be informed that their participation is anonymous

and confidential. The sample size will be determined

based on power analysis to ensure adequate statistical

power.
28

Research Locale

The research locale for this study on the

correlation of social media trends and misbehavior of

students will be in various Senior high school in the

ACLC-Naga. The study will include schools from both

urban and suburban areas to ensure a diverse sample.

This study will be based on their willingness to

participate in the study and the availability of

students who meet the study's inclusion criteria. The

study will seek to include a large and representative

sample of senior high school students to ensure the

generalizability of the findings. The researcher will

work closely with the school administration to ensure

that the study is conducted in a safe and ethical

manner and that the participation of students is

voluntary, anonymous, and confidential. The researcher

will also obtain the necessary ethical clearance from

the relevant institutional review board before

conducting the study on Senior High School students in

ACLC-NAGA.

Data Gathering Procedures

Once the permit to conduct the study is granted by

29

the school superintendent, this letter will be

forwarded to the school head of concerned schools for

the survey questionnaires.

The questionnaires will be distributed to the

respondents from ACLC-NAGA.

Last part will be, the finished survey

questionnaire will be retrieved to ensure the accuracy

of the respondents. The results of the study will be

analyzed and treated statistically.

Research Instrument

The questionnaire was designed to collect data on

the social media trends and the questionnaire was

divided into four sections.

The first section collected demographic

information about the participants, such as age,

gender, and educational level. The second section

focused on the social media trends of the participants,

such as the frequency of social media use, the types of

social media platforms used, and the amount of time

spent on social media.

30

The third section of the questionnaire focused on

the misbehavior of the participants. It included

questions related to academic dishonesty, such as

cheating and plagiarism.

The last section of the questionnaire was questions

related to non- academic misbehavior, such as drug use

and violent behavior

Statistical Tools Used
