Design for M40 grade concrete

1. Stipulation for Mix design concrete

Grade designation: M40

Type of cement: OPC 53 Grade

Aggregate Nominal size: 20 mm

Minimum cement content: 320 kg/m3

Maximum water-cement ratio : 0.45

Workability: 100 Slump

Exposure condition: Severe

Method of concrete placing: Pumping

Degree of supervision: Good

Type of aggregate: Crushed angular aggregate

Maximum cement aggregate: 450 kg/m3

Chemical admixtures: Superplasticers

2. Stipulation for Mix design concrete

Specific gravity for cement: 3.15

Specific gravity

Fine aggregate : 2.74

Coarse aggregate: 2.74

Water absorption

Coarse aggregate: 0.5 %

Fine aggregate: 1.0 %

Chemical admixtures: Superplasticizer (IS 9103)

3. Target strength for Mix Proportioning

ftarget = fck + 1.65 X S

ftarget is the target average compressive strength at 28 days.

fck is the characteristic compressive strength at 28 days.

S is the standard deviation, S is 5 MPa as per table 1 of IS 10262:2009

From above,

Target compressive strength = 40 + 1.65 X 5 = 48.25 N/mm2

4. Selection of water/cement ratio

From Table 5 of IS 456:2000,

The maximum water-cement ratio is 0.45. In this case, 0.40 is the adopted water-cement ratio.

5. Selection of water content

From Table 2 of IS 456:2000, the maximum water content adopted can be 186 litres for 20 mm aggregate (25 to
50 mm slump range).

Estimated water content for 100 mm slump = 186+ (6/100) X186 =197 Litres

As superplasticizer is used, the water content can be reduced up 20 percent and above.

Based on trials with superplasticizer, water content reduction of 29 percent has been achieved. The arrived
water content = 197 x 0.71 = 140 litres.

6. Calculation of cement

The adopted water-cement ratio is 0.40

Cement content = 140/0.40 = 350 kg /m3

From the table 5 of IS456:2000, the minimum cement content for severe exposure is 320 kg/m3

(350 kg/m3 > 320 kg/m3).

7. Proportion of the volume of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate

From Table 3, The volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate and fine
aggregate (Zone I) for a water-cement ratio of 0.50 =0.60.

In the present case, the water-cement ratio is 0.40. Therefore the volume of coarse aggregate should be
increased to decrease fine aggregate content. As the water-cement ratio is lowered by 0.10, the proportion of the
volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.02 (at the rate of -/+ 0.01 for every ± 0.05 change in the water-
cement ratio).

Therefore, the corrected proportion of the volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement ratio of 0.4 =0.62

For pumpable concrete, these values should be reduced by 10 percent.

Therefore, Volume of coarse aggregate = 0.62 X 0.9 = 0.56

Volume of fine aggregate content = 1-0.56 = 0.44

8. Mix calculation

a) Volume of concrete = 1 m3

b) Calculation of cement volume :

Cement Volume = (Mass of cement/specific gravity of cement) X (1/1000).

= (350/3150) X (1/1000)

= 0.111 m3

c) Calculation of volume of water:

Volume of water = (mass of water/specific gravity of water) x (1/1000)

= (140/1) X (1/1000)

= 0.140 m3

d) Calculation of volume of Superplasticizer:

Volume of SP = (Mass of SP /Specific gravity ) X (1/1000)

(7/1.145) X (1/1000)

= 0.006 m3

e) Calculation of Total aggregate volume

Volume of all aggregate = (a-(b+c+d)

= (1-(0.111+0.140+0.006)

=0.743 m3

f) Calculation of the Mass of Coarse aggregate:

Mass of C.A = Volume of all Aggregate X Volume of C.A X Specific gravity of C.A X 1000

= 0.743 X 0.56 X 2.74 X 1000

= 1140 kg.

e) Mass of F.A = Volume of all Aggregate X Volume of F.A X Specific gravity of F.A X 1000

= 0.743 X 0.44 X 2.74 X 1000

=896 kg.
9. Concrete Mix Proportions for trial mix 1

Mix proportion ratio: 1: 2.56 : 3.257 w/c =0.4

Materials Proportions

Cement 350 kg/m3

water 140 kg/m3

Fine aggregates 896 kg/m3

Coarse aggregate 1140 kg/m3

Super plasticizer 7 kg/m3

Water-cement ratio 0.4
