What is Arnis?
Arnis is the national martial art sport of Philippines. It is
also known as Eskrima and Kali. This sport actually emphasizes
weapon-based fighting which is done using knives, bladed
weapons, sticks and various improvised weapons. It also
includes hand to hand combat, grappling and weapon disarming
methods.

I. History and Development

• It was known in ancient Philippines as “kali” believed
to have derived from the Indonesian word tjakalele
which means fencing.
• It was called “eskrima”. Eskrima is a corrupted
English word on skirmish used by most Visayan people
which refers to fencing.
• “Arnis” derived from the word arnes which means
colorful trapping on defensive armors used on the
Moro-Moro plays.
• Arnis was developed by the indigenous populations of
the Philippines, who used an assorted range of
weaponry for combat and self-defense. Encompassing
both simple impact and edged weapons, arnis
traditionally involved rattan, swords, daggers and
spears.
• It became so popular during the early days that it was
known as the sport of kings and of the members of the
royal blood. Arnis was a standard fighting technique in
hand-to-hand combat of the Filipinos when they
revolted against Spain.

Development of the Sport

• 1596- Kali declined in popularity.
• 1764--The word “arnis” became known.
• 1853- Instead of using itak or bolo, rattan sticks became
known as a self-
defense weapon
• 1957- First book in Arnis was published by Don Placido
Lumbao
• 1970’s- The birth of “Modern Arnis” founded by Remy
Presas
• 1990's- Arnis was recognized internationally.
• 2009- Arnis became the Philippines’ National Martial
Arts and Sport
after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed the Republic
Act. No. 9850 in 2009.
