EXPOSÉ ANGLAIS UBER

Hello(présentation lisa x2), today we are going to present you the Uber company
called before Ubercab. It’s an american technological company which allows us to be found
on a map and connected to the closest driver to our location. The application indicate how
long we have to wait for the driver.

Our presentation will be divided into 4 parts. First of all we will talk about the management
of the company. Secondly we would like to bring your attention to uber’s extent worldwide.
Thirdly to the mission statement and finally Uber’s controversies. Now i will give Lisa the
floor…

Uber has been founded in 2009 by Garett Kamp and Travis Kalanick. Travis Kalanick is
part of America’s 400 fortunes. They came up with the idea after seeing James Bond, Casino
Royal. Oh I have seen that movie too, but unfortunately I didn’t have the same idea.
It’s too bad. It has its headquarters in San francisco. Dara Kosrowshahi became the CEO of
the corporation in august 2017. He succeeded Travis Kalanick. (Montrer la slide sur
l’organizational chart). As you see on the slide, it’s a top-down structure with a clearly visible
hierarchy. Can you tell us who are the 2 principals shareholders ?

Yes, The 2 principals shareholders are SB investment Advisers , Benchmark Capital

management . Both own practicly ¼(quarter) of the company.
Uber currently has 20,000 employees worldwide. It’s a platform with the largest network of
active riders. Uber drivers earn 80% of the fare’s cost.
They have 3 millions drivers around the world. There is no discount for uber employees and
the most employees in the USA are army veteran. Yes I’ve heard of that
Uber is a parent company. There are many Uber subsidiaries which provide different services
and are used for various purposes such as :
-UberEat : launched in 2014, it is a platform which has online food delivery from the local
restaurant
-UberPop didn’t require diploma or certification. It was a Consumer2Consumer service but
wasn’t secure enough so it was suspended in 2015.
- Uberpool, not very well known where one can share the path with other passenger. It’s a
kind of carpooling. But in France there is a competitor most used called Blablacar.
- Uber berline : has the same mission than the regular Uber application except that you can
ride about luxury cars.
So Uber company is increasing in several sectors we didn’t expect. It reached his customers
and has established in the market.
Uber company is a service between business and consumers. It’s a platform that
connects customers and drivers. It is a private corporation. Furthermore, his position in the
financial services sector allows it to maintain its place as the leader of the VTC’s market for
years. Uber is now trying to positionate itself as a key player in the mobility market. The
growth of the corporation is going global.
In fact, an interesting analyse is that the application is related to local business. That is why
the competition still local. It is therefore the only one in its field to have monopolized the
market worldwide. Despite this, Uber main competitor is Lyft highly developped in the USA
which works the same way. In France, the main competitors are Heetch or chauffeur privé.
Its growth is impressive. Indeed, in only 5 years the company is established in 290 cities and
50 countries, with 140 millions rides in 2014. 4 years later in 2018, the 3 millions drivers
made 5,3 billion of orders in 63 different countries, with 91 millions users. Despite critics,
the application increased fast. The company made a turnover of 11,3 billions dollars in 2018,
against 495 millions in 2014, Pour que ce soit plus parlant tu sais par cb le CA a été multiplié
entre 2014 et 2018 ? The turnover rose by 22 in only 4 years. Impressive. So there are 75
millions people using Uber services. Now Lisa will point out more details about the mission
statement.

Uber's mission is to bring transportation — for everyone, everywhere. A smarter

transportation with fewer cars and greater access. Transportation that's safer, cheaper, and
more reliable; that creates more job opportunities and higher incomes for drivers. Make
people’s life easier. Indeed, uber for business is a service of meal delivery for companies and
to easily reach a specific location In addition to giving riders a way to get from point A to
point B. They put the security first because of the controversy that some cases aroused in
the beginning. They partner with safety lawyers, develop new technologies and systems to
help improve safety and help make it easier for everyone to get around. Uber promotes its
ability to the common good of the society by helping cities around the world , make public
transportation more accessible, equitable, and efficient. And also by providing access to care
for those in need by offering them flexible ride-scheduling options. Uber Elevate is focused
on making accessible the urban air mobility.
fun fact :longest uber ride was 2 256miles11000$ ->5500 for the ride and 5500 for an
extra for the uber. So now Lisa will finish with a little part about uber’s controversies. It’s
fascinating

Uber came under many controversies.

In fact, it has been the subject of controversy over sexual assault, especially in Uberpop
platform because the driver was a private driver. Another controversy was the conflict
between Uber and the taxis drivers who protested againt the unfair competition exerted by
all the private driver companies. As Uber began to develop, prices were really attractive. So
Taxis lost a large part of their customers and they made several demonstrations.
And Finally, Uber drivers file a lawsuit against the company. The suit claims that drivers
should be treated as employees, not contract workers. If the drivers were considered as
employees, Uber would have to pay minimum wage.
change. Do you think Uber is just a trend or a sustainable business ?
