DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS IV

QUARTER I- WEEK 4

I. Objectives
At the end of the 50 minutes discussion the students must be able to:
a. Estimate the product of 3-to-4-digit numbers to 2-to-3-digit number with reasonable result;
and
b. Perform problems solving that involves multiplication

Value Focus: Love for nature

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Estimating the Product of 3-To-4-Digit Numbers To 2-To-3-Digit Number with
Reasonable Result
B. Reference: Mathematics 4: Teacher’s Guide pp. 66-69
C. Materials: Picture, Chalk and Blackboard
III. Procedure:
1. Routinary Activities
2. Review

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Motivation

How many mangoes do you think does this basket

contains?
(The students answers will be accepted)
How did you guess the number without even
counting?
Just by looking at it and thinking how many
mangoes can that small basket hold?
What you did is what we call “estimating”. It is when
we try to guess the number of things without really
counting it.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation of the Topic
Today we are going to discuss how to estimate
the product of 3-to-4-digit numbers to 2-to-3-
digit number with reasonable result.

Let’s try to solve this problem:

Have
you
seen
any

orchids?
Yes!
Can you describe the orchids you saw?
It is beautiful and has colorful flowers
Are these orchids important? What do you think
they do to us and our environment (Instilling the
love for nature)
Orchids makes the surrounding beautiful. It is
also a plant so it also cleanses the air we
breathe and it is also a food for our butterflies
Very good. That is why we should try to take care of
and bees.
these orchids and other plants as well for they have
so many benefits to us and the environment

Going back to the problem,

Answer the following questions:
How much does a pot of orchid plant sold?
How many pots were sold?
P7,645 a pot
What is the phrase in the problem indicates that the
123 pots were sold
estimated product is being asked?
about how much money did the club get?
2. Performing the Activity
Let’s study how to estimate products:

Step 1: 7645 8000

x 123 x100

Step 2: 8000
X100
80000

First round the multiplicand and multiplier to the

highest/greatest place value then multiply the
rounded numbers.

Group Activity
You will be grouped into 5 with 8 members each.
You will be given an activity sheet which you will
Activity Sheet:
work in group to solve. When done a member of the
group will try to explain your work in front of the Group#: _______
class. Members: _________

Estimate the product of the following:

1. 3456 x 48=
2. 5435 x 356=
3. 7453x456=
4. 8456 x 45=
3. Processing the Activity
How did you come up with your answer?

The group will explain their answers.

4. Summarizing the Lesson
How do we estimate the product of a3- to 4- digit
numbers by 2- to 3- digit numbers?
To estimate the product, you have to round
the factors to the greatest/highest place
value, then multiply the rounded factors.

C. Assessment

GIVEN ROUNDED FACTORS ESTIMATED PRODUCT

Ex. 4784 x 345 5000 x 300 1 500 000
1. 9456 x 29
2. 6543 x 45
3. 478 x 234
4. 278 x 78
5. 4678 x 298

D. Homework/Assignment
Read and Solve
1. Inside a rice mill, there are 125 rows of sacks of palay. Each row has 250 sacks of palay. About
how many sacks of palay are there?
2. 34 averaged-sized rambutan weigh one kilogram. About how many averaged-sized rambutan
are there in 1483 kilograms?
