MULTIPLYING MENTALLY 2-DIGIT BY 1-TO 2-DIGIT NUMBERS

Background information for Learners

To multiply mentally 2-digit by 1- to 2digit numbers with the products up to 200, follow the following steps

Solution 1

• Multiply the ones.


• Multiply the tens by the ones.
• Add the two partial products.

Solution 2

• Used the distributive property


Let’s Explore!

Mang Lito and his caretaker can harvest 65 kilograms of kalamansi in a day. How many kilograms
of kalamansi can they harvest in 3 days?

Solution 1 65 Multiply mentally the ones.

X3 3x5 = 15
Multiply mentally the ones by tens.

3x60=180

Add mentally

15+ 180 = 195

Solution 2 By distributive property

3x65= (3x60) + (3x5)

. = 180 + 15

= 195

The street lights are 25 meter apart. If there are 10 street lights, what is the distance from the first street light to the last
street light?

Since there are 9 spaces between the lights, you multiply 9 x 25 = 225 So, the distance between the first and last street
lights is 225m.

1. A sari-sari store sells 1525 bottles of soda in a month. If a bottle costs Php15, how much is the sale of
the sari-sari store in a month?
Answer : 1525 x 15 = Php22,875

2. The Department of Health distributes 1255 medicine kits to every town in a certain region. How many
medicine kits will be distributed, if there are 16 towns in that region?
